  1. James . Im surprised you had no sympathy for louisiana s post. I understand her pov all to well louisiana. James has pointed out his dislike for the sort of doh owner you describe to be fair. its not easy for a neutral to know a good dog or owner until its too late unfortunately
  2. I have never rented off a government but have often rented from private landlords. Long before the buy to let market was so inflamed. People often need to let their properties for reasons other than private gain and in countries where renting is not seen as an inferior choice there are plenty of available lets. Being a private land lord is not inheretly bad. But we have surely passed the point where it was a way to make a living and has now entered a fantasy land of numbers. Landlords buying property and keeping them off the rental because its easier to let it sit vacant while its value rises
  3. Of course not. and because its you mr dale i wont even rise to the bait But the mix of public and private housing was better in the past. I would definitely limit the number of houses per person tho. . Apart from that live and buy or rent wherever you like
  4. Indeed so Tillie - the way some people talk these days I wonder if they were even alive at the time, or like childbirth, the pain was so great they have convinced themselves it can never happen again it's the end of a busy day so my post was rambling a bit - but in short: people must come to a realisation that houses are for people (not just themselves) to live in - from there we can all get on with whatever we do in our lives to make money. We start thinking of them as investments we a) accumulate to the detriment of others and b) will suffer ourselves when the next crash comes Point a) is of course a foundation-block of the world we live in but surely we can restrict it to commodities with less of a basic need for living?
  5. Ah I see (said the blind man) CitizenED should also take a bow surely, everyone?
  6. Can't say I agree Alachlan (rising house prices being a good thing) Surely anyone can see that people in important jobs (And many in non-important but better paid jobs) are beyond getting a place so your second argument means nothing if you can't actually get hold of a property in the first place (ie it will never be an investment) The only way some people in that position can do it is to beg borrow and steal and become a property investor themselves - fuelling the very speculation. It's all a house of cards and will come tumbling down. The fact that people have been predicting the crash for years without it being true doesn't make it not so. Compared to the last housing crash the average UK dweller relies on debt so the pain next time will make any glib remarks about houses being more than a place to live seem very callous
  7. Tillie - I already feel guilty for not including you. But your self-esteem is so robust you know I was thinking of you anyway
  8. EdKiwi has made tentative steps in these waters of late - I've noticed a few posts which have gone unremarked Let's start a where are they now column PS - thanks for the love BB & Keef (just 10 days til I see Rufus, BB)
  9. Heck she gets points for her name alone!
  10. heh heh - poor Keef - that brought your buzz down ;-) Citizen Ed - is that an obscure reference or have you copied and pasted from another thread by accident?
  11. * winks at Jonboy and apologises of he scared him - t'were just a prank * * flicks light switch to show newly decorated room * * 3 hugh glitter balls descend from the ceiling * * a mean bassline starts to eminate from newly installed speakers * * people start dancing .. but something doesn't feel right.. * * opps - sorry Piers.* * turns music down *
  12. Cheeky geograhically that means they will have to have it at the Harverster or Maybe the Woodhouse
  13. * motions to DM, Mike, Mockney and the others to shhhh * * turns on light behind large chair on which he is sitting, thus blinding Jonboy * * a gust of wind blows shut the door behind Jonboy * "Welcome to this Perfectly Normal room"
  14. Diary of a Foxton's estate agent * http://www.stewartlee.co.uk/press/londonlifes/01-foxtons-2007-01-23.htm *As fictionally but funnily written by Stewart Lee for Whats On In London magazine
  15. By being named? By being called recent? By not capitalising your name?
  16. Dangerous thread - could become a right luvvie-fest I'll name a couple of people who have kept me interested (there are others as well - hope they are not offended by not being named) Michael Palaeologus (in his various incarnations) who was a prime mover in keeping this place more interesting than an online version of the South London Press Dulwichmum - obvious reasons Mockney Piers - for often making me think I posted my thoughs more articulately than I normally do (only to find it was he who made the post) Administrator - for his single-mindedness in finding lounge material Keef - for the reasons stated Those are the old school posters - plenty of interesting posters joined of late. Bellendelle Belle & asset, to name but two
  17. eccentric funnily enough I have never had reason to hang a left when I reach that crossroads - I am curious by nature but you are hinting I would be wise not to? Anyway - back on topic - do we have any volunteers to sketch this out - I think it could be a seller (along with the ED postcards)
  18. I like the buildings being named as well - some more dubious than other tho' Some great suggestions on here but preferably we should have some kind of geographical relationshiop. Bermondsey might be the Bronx to some people but that's isn't going to work on a map. (Besides I walk through it every day and it's not bad at all. I saw Tobet Maguire looking at some apartments there yesterday as well)
  19. Good call Jonboy LL itself = 5th Avenue Goose Green roundabout = Statue of Liberty (?? hmmm?) Honor Oak = New jersey EDIT: great minds think alike Georgia
  20. Ant - more the merrier. In my naivete I assumed that us forumites would just end up on a team together anyway Karter is only 50/50 to come btw but I'm almost 100% (still hoping I get my voice back mind you)
  21. Could be one for the lounge this - it's definitely ED related but is whimsical too - let's start and see what happens If ED and it's environs were somewhere else what would the different areas be called? As an example the area at the top of LL near the library has been called the Upper East Side - a NY reference which probably makes: North Cross RD = Greenwich Village Peckham Rye = Battery Park. Dulwich Village = The Hamptons Anyone else have any NY references and then we could move on to another city. If there are any artists out there perhaps they could sketch these up as they develop and they might end up being worthwile local artwork?
  22. Darn it Mike - I just reread the thread title and was going to post exact same. My own fault for being so slow I guess...
  23. * Averts eyes *
  24. There is much sense in what you say and it is a bit painful to criticise an old friend. But the Blue Mountain being the quirky loner is no longer true To paraphrase Damon Albarn complaining about Noel Gallagher "You can only live on a legend for so long. yes it was good but it's like a guy in his 60s saying he got 9 A levels when he was 15" That's being a bit harsh on Mel & Co actually, I do still like to go but there is enough feedback for some of the complaints to be true and worth addressing?
