Mockney I've re-read that paragraph 3 times now and I get more annoyed each time!
-
now we are on to words which annoy rather than offend - but that has started me off! "In terms of" is waaay overused by people these days - it doesn't even replace anything, people just ram it into any old sentence

Improving East Dulwich - community grant
SeanMacGabhann replied to monica's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Oh lord yes - the Christmas lights. Can we not contact whoever is in charge of them and see what needs to be done to get some new ones I think the lights have been discussed on here before and it amounts to the traders not wishing to upgrade. I have this image of Karter taking them down in January and putting them in a shoe-box. I'm sure they would fit -
Let's hope none taste like brine

Yes - it's all Jah and no Lush from you isn't it - get 'em down to Hoopers man

You think asterisks are bad???? You should try and spell the word "special - ist" on here (properly) and see what happens when you post

That's all very well CWALD, but what we want to know is - do you prefer Ciabatta or Sourdough? Sounds like you were rebelling against quite a lot back in the day... I was in a similar school/position from 12-16 but didn't take the education route either. (Still haven't) Didn't take a "me against the world route" either - i just left home to see what was out there. Interesting last point you make too. But you have got a cheeky streak so you might have been satirising....

I'm sure I've passed some sort of stables when I've been on the Dulwich Common Rd - In fact a quick gander.. Dulwich Riding School, Dulwich Common, London SE21 7EX Tel: 020 8 693 2944 Key: A2 -
ChavWivaLawDegree - interesting background but I'm not sure - why did you reach the "I wanted to prove I could do the middle class stuff " stage. And while some posh people do enjoy looking down on working class people, it ain't a given. Some working class people assume that all middle-class people are tossers and end up hurting people who have no grievance with them at all. I wouldn't say that's something to be proud of

I'm off the opinion that if Julie Burchill is for something, I'm agin it. She was very quick to point out that because that girl in the Bb house wasn't working class she got off lightly compared to Jade, which I really disagree with I think words can only be offensive if the intent is so - that is why, for example, I think the Jade Goody/ Indie Music girl incidents on BB were quite different. That shouldn't give anyone a blanket excuse to say whatever they like mind you The n word is a good example - among black britons it appears to be still taboo if my friends are representative. But the US seem to have moved the word on to a different place. Watching The Wire of late (yes, another plug for the best TV show ever) it's a word that is used far from sparingly and it's always amongst friends. I suspect this is how teh BB contestant got it so wrong...

lol Mockney... I shall be sure to address ye accordingly in future

On another thread a debate has sparked up around the rights and wrongs of using certain phrases which could be seen as prejudicial - in this case "chav" What are peoples thoughts on this and other phrases / prejudices which they think are a) out of order or b) justified
-
Leaving aside the inherent prejudice of the term "chav", James is surely factually correct that there just aren't that many "upper class who are loutish and ignorant and have no regard or respect for other people with ferocious dogs of all kinds of breed?" If there are I'm interested to know how to avoid them There are certainly many many "upper class who are loutish and ignorant and have no regard or respect for other people " regardless of their dog-owning status but the difference/problem with them is they don't atually care who calls them what To keep this thread on topic but to allow the names/prejudice/acceptabilty debate to continue Im going to start another thread - which can now be found here: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,25633

Keef & Fear n' Boozin running the CPT quiz Wednesday 13th June
SeanMacGabhann replied to Keef's topic in The Lounge
1am? I'm almost impressed Keef. Thought if I styaed I wouldn't get home until 3 at the earliest -
I know many a middle class teenager who adopts both the uniform and the accent (albeit far moe common outside London) And I know many more working class people who don't and just go about their lives without fuss If as you say it's an exclusively working class thing it certainly doesn't represent all of working-class culture. And "middle class or upper class badly behaved, loud, tastelessly dressed or over dressed people " may not be called chavs but trust me they are called far worse. certainly in my house EDIT - sorry Mark - mea culpa.
-
ChavWivALawDegree - I agree that anyone who generalises about the working classes (as many of us are/were) is out of order. But I think chav as a term is more often used to describe people (of any class) who wears a certain uniform and tries to be "bad"... Huguenot's position on dogs is interesting. No legislation but stiffer penalties for misbehaviour? It could catch on... if anyone could find a way to catch the owners... James: I think speed bumps are the worst and crudest form of speed control myself. I think Barry Rd is seen as a main artery but it's the narrower roads around it where speeding cars are more of a problem with poor visibility of pedestrians with parked cars everywhere etc. I can tell you however that on any gioven walk fromthe Upper East Side to LL I will see many many many many drivers breaking the law - speeding, mobile phone use etc - in no way a minority Your point around criminals being repeat offenders is trues as far as it goes. But it depends on what is meant by criminal act. Most people tend to engage in illegal activity on a daily basis (copying home music, recreational smoking etc etc) but don't see themselves as criminals. Ticket machines can be broken and offices unmanned but so many people use that excuse on a daily basis. Im not talking about the "criminals" know to police. Just people who know they are unlikely to be caught. I get into huge rows with friends about it all the time.... And these days, at the risk of sounding like Ken, there is no reason any of us NEED to use a ticket machine. If we travel irregularly or daily there are ways of prebuying everything But these things could be better implemented for sure
-
And just when I had let the dog thing lie... James - you do have a valid point about the hardcore minority appearing to get away with things but that doesn't excuse our own behaviour should we flout the law I have no problem with either penalty fares or speed bumps and cameras. Because I never travel without a ticket nor speed. And that was ever true before the "worrying" steps you describe were put in place I can guarantee from my own experience (and aquaintances behaviour) that not buying a ticket and speeding are not done by a small minority. Not by a long shot

Electrical safety in ED houses
SeanMacGabhann replied to jackangel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not at all J - but for me it's one of those things I know I ought to sort out but as nothing has gone wrong yet, find it easier to play parlour games on the forum From what work I have done in the flat the electrics seem to be in better shape than a lot of the other infrastructure when the house was converted. But better doesn't necessarily mean good enough. It's good to know about these things and thanks for the heads up -
