I used "the likes of" as a subsititute for "as examples of" newer people I've met - if someone asked me who my favourite singers are I'm just as likely to say "the likes of Bowie, Coughlan etc" But I THINK daizie was just yanking my chain

Anyone ever see woofmarkthedog and honaloochieb in the same room? Me neither

University? College? Polytechnics? All above me mate. Left school at 16 i was slightly scared of established forumites when I went to my first drinks. I say slightly. I mean very. I could have bottled it and called them a clique. But that sort of thinking is just lame. I went along and met some ace people. Some of them had been to uni and were confident. Some didn't and weren't and vice versa. If in doubt, grow a pair As recently as this year I've met the likes of daizie and ladymuck and had some cracking nights with them. I have also clashed with them on here. Quids I have had some major run ins with.. Still do in fact. I kinda love him tho the word clique brings me out in a rash. There are people I like and a small number of people I actively dislike. I doubt that is unusual tho.

A few BIG threads that month - and by big I mean more than 2000 views This one had more than 5000 and there were 3000+ hits for Nigel the 185 bus driver, the EDF drinks at Black Cherry, Nappy Changing and Blue MOuntain cafe threads (each)

Copy of Lib Dem coalition agreement with Tories
SeanMacGabhann replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've never understood OBSESSION with waste. Obvious and easily addressed waste fair enough but any company or government running multi-billion budgets must have waste built in. That doesn't mean it can't be addressed but saying "not a penny more until ALL waste is stopped" is tilting at windmills -
I'm not saying that (as well you know) Rosie I agree with pretty much all the points you and quids make re: The Drawing Room Where I differ is that I don't think the DR is connected in any meaningful way with daizie's question Huguenot makes the very valid point that as long as the forum has existed, someone has always said it isn't what it was. And trult there have always been lulls in activity But if I'm reading correctly, many people feel THIS time is different. And maybe it is. But The Drawing Room is a red herring. The Lounge was but a shadow of itself at the time the DR came to be. And yes people like *Bob* don't post in there but people like *Bob* don't post as much as they used to full stop. If I remember rightly *Bob* stopped posting full stop for quite a while (before the DR).

Quids/Rosie Sorry, I didn?t mean to imply that the Drawing Room had improved the Lounge or was in itself a roaring success I think the change had already set in by the time of the Drawing Room?s inception - of the posts so far I think Mr Ben comes closest with SOME of his observations
-
It depends when exactly you think the EDF was as vital as you remember it I can?t agree with you Quids on the effect of the Drawing Room ? I recall the DR being an attempt to get away from just how dumb the Lounge had become (not silly dumb, but dim dumb).

It's not so much the dialogue (although it is an issue) but the even-by-hokum-standards leaps in guesswork When he was given the gun in episode one and then with a single "why am I finkin abaht...." he managed to deduce the whole dog/gun/cremation thing But I'll give it another go

London Bridge is A feed into the City - it's isn't the only point of entry. I have worked in Moorgate, Tower Bridge, St James, Southwark Bridge and currently Blackfriars. Never had a problem commuting to the city on public transport , not even when I had 6:30am starts and I can only see the Overground helping Blackfriars to London Bridge is a 20 minute walk, it's true - but it's amazing what a pleasant walk can do for one's thoughts instead of scrambling on a train the whole time - those 20 minutes are not necessarily "lost" or something you can't afford but are part of the day I actively enjoy

Finally watched ep 1 last night - he was good enough in it but even allowing for bunkum/enjoyable popcorn telly it was pretty poor. Having a villain as woo as that in the opening episode was all wrong Cracker did this sort of thing much better 20 odd years ago. C-

sooo, Red Dead Redemption coming next week The all too obvious "GTA in the wild west" comments aside, anyone looking forward to this? As a Deadwood fan, it looks like Rock* have really nailed the atmos, plus it's very interesting period in history as the wild west gave way to the technology changes I need to finish FF XIII first tho - all linearity aside, some of the battles are becoming epic And despite lukewarm reception I?m loving it. The first steps on Gran Pulse (about Chapter 11) had an even bigger ?holy F***? effect on me than the scientists in Jurassic Park catching first glimpse of the dinosaurs.

?But it is an interesting point about people treading carefully around Islam while criticizing Catholicism more openly... see the article in DC's original post...? I?m never sure about this one ? in the last week we have seen the release of 4 Lions which could easily be seen as an attack on Islam ? it isn?t but it could be seen as one. And there is more critiquing of Islam as a religion than the ?treading carefully? suggests Then again, when hear people say how it?s not fair to criticise Chatolocism when people ?tread lightly? around Islam, I can?t help but feel there are good life and death reason behind that, what with the examples of Danish Cartoons, Fatwahs and all the rest of it. Do we want, say, the Catholic church to achieve parity by becoming as aggressive ?? I don?t THINK so?.

oh and Magpie - why so quick to say this is "the left" masturbating. Intellectually.. From what I can see of the lefties on here they are all against it. Silverfox who I would guess is more right-leaning is the most ambivelant of the bunch at the moment (and he is also against it)

Go on Steve - you can figure this one out. It's ok to say Yankees and Ozzies (winners in whatever war/genocide they were involved in ) and it's not ok to say "Pakis" (people who get beaten up just because of the colour of their skin) because.... come on Steve you can do it....

Opera's browser was released a month or two ago and for anyone who needs to use browsing abroad I can't recommend it enough - it compresses and caches data much better and whilst I'm not sure it reduces data traffic by the claimed 90%, it does save a LOT of money on International charges But no, it doesn't have flash either I have given up on Flash ever appearing on Apple products

I'd be interested in finding out hust how many "many" is in this context I wonder if many = a majority As far as women's rights go every progressive measure is always fought with the same "men know best" ideology. And there is never a shortage of women to support that view either. Doesn't make it right. We aren't going to repeal women's right to vote because many of them thought it was a lot of fuss about nothing at the time are we? In fact you could find almost any subjugation of a body of people and find many of the victims "support" the very thing that keeps them down. See also slavery. Doesn't mean we don't fight the fight

Bit of a cop out answer maybe but ? ?case by case? basis for me The point in question on the original thread was female circumcision ? which is so nuts and so barbaric and so demonstrably backward, anyone condoning it (and that includes saying the male elders in that culture have their own history) needs to have a good hard look at themselves But that is a long way from agreeing with a blanket ?modern, liberal, western and democratic societies believe their opinions on related matters to be superior to those from societies that are backward, illiberal, authoritarian or fundamentalist?? So by keef's measure I am arrogant for my views on female circumcision. But keef you can't seriously mean that 100% down the line. If you know a guy who beats his pregnant wife up regularly are you honestly saying your opinion is only equal to his? really?
