disabled bays.. do they 'belong' to anyone?
Pugwash replied to shell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think this has been blown out of all proportion. I/Mum would not have qualified for a disabled parking bay on the grounds that the car owner did not live at the same address. My mother was also on dialysis and the ambulance collected her 3 times a week to take her to Guys for this- if there was an 'empty' disabled bay ( there was one in the street further down) they would park in that otherwise they had to double park on a busy side street, This bay was about 100 yards from the flat and when I visited at weekends was always occupied. There is no way I would have expected a disabled bay for Mum - I see much abuse of blue badges and it annoys me very much. -
At the moment we have 2 green, 2 blue and 1 brown bin in our garden and we are the only occupants of the house. One blue bin appeared overnight - hubby went up and down the road checking our neighbours to see who was missing a bin. Took blue bin down to a multi occupied house as they only had one of each colour and bins always overflowing. Next collection day we had 3 green bins and 2 blue as refuse men just put them in our garden, multi occupied house got their green bin back and we gave up trying to find owner of the blue bin You can purchase flowery covers that stick on your bins to make them more 'attractive' if the colour offends you. In Bromley - they only have open recycling boxes, all other refuse is in black bags, and collection is fortnightly. My daughter's front garden always looks untidy as foxes have ripped away the black bags and the recycling gets blown all over the lawn. Food waste is collected from small brown caddys. daughter tries to keep black bags etc indoors until collection day but does not have the space (we could not use her downstairs loo as had several bags stored in there as refuse had not been collected that week which meant 4 weeks of rubbish to put out next time. She often talks about taking one of our bins home with her and painting over the southwark logo. Bromley charge for wheelie bins ( thought to be around ?40 per bin)

Recommendations for private cervical smear test?
Pugwash replied to EstherDR's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you wish another smear to reassure yourself of a possible medical problem, would it not be better to mention this to your GP who could do another smear or give advice where to contact. -
Are all the other leaseholders happy with the Management Company as I believe you have to have consent from the majority to hire a Management Company. One of my old work colleagues had a Management Company which the leaseholders were not happy with, and held a meeting and all agreed that they could do a better job themselves. I believe they went through a solicitor to sort it out. The freeholder was happy with their choice and raised no complaints

disabled bays.. do they 'belong' to anyone?
Pugwash replied to shell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Quote With all due respect Pugwash, and I accept that this was a pain for you, it sounds like you wanted a disabled bay set aside for your mother in what was obviously a crowded street so that you would have somewhere to park for a few minutes once a week? Not sure that would be a great use of the system No I did not want a disabled bay for my Mum, just pointing out that had there been a 'empty' disabled bay near her flat, I would have used it for the few minutes I required to get her in and out of the car. Frequently once I had returned her home, I parked where ever I could (frequently 10 mins walk away from her flat) so that I could spend time with her. When she died, I returned her Blue Badge to Lewisham Social Services who were very surprised at my action as many relatives keep the badge for themselves to abuse the system. Sainsbury's in Bell Green did a trawl of their disabled bays and put a parking ticket on those cars in the bays without a Blue Badge. 2 doors down from me there is a disabled bay and this was applied for by the Housing Association which owned the property. At the time there were no tenants in the property owning a Blue Badge and they were equally surprised why they had this bay outside the house. Turned out that the cleaner employed by the HA got fed up trawling up and down the road with her hoover, that the HA requested the bay to enable her to visit weekly to do cleaning. This was several years ago, the bay is still there and local church goers use the bay . -
disabled bays.. do they 'belong' to anyone?
Pugwash replied to shell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I tried to get a disabled bay for my mother who had to go out in a wheelchair to our car and I ended up having to double park on a crowded road, go into her flat, get her sorted into the chair, lock up the flat and wheel her to the car and take pot luck that I was not blocking other cars. I could not get a disabled bay as I was not living at the address with my mother although my care was the only one that took her out weekly to do her shopping There is a great swindle going on with blue badges and disabled bay parking and criteria for obtaining a blue badge in the first place is tightening. Some Blue Badges have expiry dates on them check your neighbours. -
is your daughter officially recognised as being a authorised person to live in your property? If Housing Dept has you as living by yourself they would prevent you bidding for a 2 bed property. If the above does not apply - contact your Resident Officer (Housing Officer) and try and get more information re the letter. failing that your local councillor.

Impressive police response in Court Lane
Pugwash replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
A few years ago we were broken into whilst my hubby was in the house and he came face to face with burglar who appeared very drunk. Hubby was about to ring Police when he remembered that there was a police car outside our house. He informed officers that he had a very drunk burglar in his house - several police officers and a dog charged in the house and arrested the guy. It would appear that this guy had broken into houses down the road and was spotted by builders, he made his way via various gardens until he got to us when he proceed to break a heavy wooden door, then some French windows to gain entry to us. Various householders reported that a man was climbing their garden fences and called police. It sounds that this may have happened in this incident -
Recommendations For Medical Practice in ED
Pugwash replied to KateFord's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not knowing where you live - difficult to advise as many GPs have catchment areas, We are near Dulwich Library and were originally in catchment area of the Gardens (where we still are) however the catchment area for new patients is more towards Peckham Rye and bordering on SE15 -
Check it out with your GP and seek a referral for a psychologist. I do not know whether the Sunshine House set up has these, but I know there is a child and family centre at Maudsley

Ikea Kitchens - has anyone got any experience?

One of my daughters has a Wickes kitchen which was fitted by the same company. The other daughter has a Homebase kitchen fitted by a private builder -
Looked at stuff in BHS Lewisham last week - all reasonable price and good variety. Was looking for duvet cover but the one I liked had only single or King size in stock. Went to M & S as hubby wanted some shirts for his birthday and although got 2 shirts, they seemed to have reduced the size of their men's wear section and were offering a smaller choice

Climbing frame - permission needed?
Pugwash replied to drjennyo's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would not think that permission for a climbing frame is needed if it is an ordinary child size frame. Families frequently install these in their gardens and I have never heard about planning consent. I recall someone having a trampoline in the garden and noting that their teenage son was always bouncing up and down in the hot weather in order to see if their next door neighbour was sunbathing in their swimsuit. (They had a 6 foot fence) -
Ikea Kitchens - has anyone got any experience?
Pugwash replied to cmacnew's topic in The Family Room Discussion
had an IKEA kitchen some 15/20 years ago. After about 10 years the melamine coating started peeling off (I have the blue/green finish). It turned out that following a TV programme that some of the ranges had a design fault and people were urged to go back to IKEA for replacement. Unfortunately when I went back, they had discontinued my colour range and could not get any replacement doors. I am now in the process of having all the doors repainted. Apart from these peeling problem, I have been very happy with the units. -
police using speed radar checks on camberwell grove
Pugwash replied to northdulmum's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
From what I gather from a friend who went to a neighbourhood police forum, that the Police do not feel that 20mph is realistic on main roads as most people go over that but they have noted that in these areas, people are usually sticking to under 30 mph. A general decrease in speeding. -
NCT run classes on Saturdays at Christ Church Barry Road.

I was going to do NCT classes 30 years ago when my 2nd child was on the way, having had a 13 year age gap after the first. Ended up joining their coffee morning group instead. This was a group of mums all living locally who had children within the same period as my daughter (Jan/Feb) we took turns in hosting a coffee morning ( I think it was every 2 weeks) found it very helpful and with a couple of people we stayed in touch for a number of years as our girls went to the same school.
