  1. Good education = - ability to communicate your thoughts, opinions and needs verbally and in writing - ability to calculate and not to be afraid of numbers - knowing how to find what you need to know, where to go and what to ask - continued interest in learning new things - enough qualifications to get you the job you want Nice to haves - ability to speak a language other than your own - understanding the lessons and patterns of history - understanding what the world is made of and the basics of natural laws - interest in playing a sport - ability to sing or play an instrument That's what comes to mind, would anyone care to refine?
  2. I really agree with this. The selfishness and why-can't-everyone-live-their-lives-more-like-me-ishness of recent threads on the topic absolutely blew me away. One person even suggested people with children shouldn't be allowed to take them to the supermarket.
  3. Yeah. The last line gives it away, doesn't it?
  4. OI! Carnell! Just because I'm quiet for a little while doesn't mean you can get away with that kind of thing. Thank you, PGC.
  5. Ah, makes sense now. Carry on..
  6. So what makes the Southern end of LL the 'top' and the Northern end the 'bottom'? Is it because it's the end closest to DV?
  7. ........aaaand we're back to
  8. Tumpty tumpty tumpty tumpty tum - 'ave a banana. Young but well educated, Stevo.
  9. I know, sorry Keef. Gotta spend some time with the old man, though, feel like I've hardly seen him recently. However - and I know this wasn't what you meant - I will try to get your Wire back to you. Perhaps PGC would be kind enough to be my envoy?
  10. Don't bring bananas, whatever you do.
  11. Pint. You. When you show up to a Forum drink. Wherever it is. By the exchange of monies for goods. Why? Finally a good question. To show friendliness in spite of grammatical and syntactical arsery.
  12. Thank you, Judge Mockney, and when will the hanging of metaphor take place?

    Petty Annoyances

Um, well I think I know what the dream was about, so yes I think you are right. I shan't take a cricket bat to bed because it won't be there when I'm dreaming. Many years ago, my mum gave me a magic sword to fight monsters in my dreams which worked very well, but I lost it some time in my teens. PGC, stop feeding my dinosaurs and encouraging them to be lounge lizards purring on your sofa.
  14. Oh I see. It was a strong way of putting it, but I do think it's a huge set back, and I thought disadvantage wasn't enough. Or are you saying that one should not say 'disabled' at all? It's not considered acceptable to refer to people as 'disabled', is the word itself also tabu?

    I am here, sorry.
  16. SeanMac, que? Sorry, don't get your post. PGC, I know You haven't but lots of other people have. And I think it's sad. but maybe it's the dinosaurs talking. edited for embarrassing Freudian slip*! Is that rude? I mean, talking about slips. Filthy really.
  17. Chav said 'As long as I'm understood I don't really care too much about not knowing the correct grammar.' Bang on. And I agree with giggirl's response. I couldn't care less about the split infinitive, and I don't think that its omission makes speech or writing any clearer or more elegant. But in some instances bad grammar is distracting and does make you less easy to understand. People who aren't taught to write and speak clearly - no, this isn't about accent - are automatically disabled in life. Can I veer off topic and bring in vocabulary irritations? People using 'disinterested' where they mean 'uninterested' impoverishes the language - now we have two words that mean the same thing, and have lost a useful word meaning something completely different.
  18. Dearest Tony, my eyes are welling with tears of pride. He's a credit to me, that boy.

Or you could just talk about it all year, save on the bother of this conversation. *eyes wearily to ceiling* Sorry, I got out of bed the wrong side today. Had horrible dreams about dinosaurs.
  20. It's good to know that I have so many friends on this forum. I love you all dearly, and Christmas cheer will be flowing merrily to you all from Moos Towers. IN DECEMBER. P.S. HonaloochieB, you are sweet. What on earth makes you think it would have taken me all this time to determine whether or not that scamp Mickey Plinkyplonkyguts is naughty or nice?
  21. My cat is male* but no longer single, having recently taken up with a Titian-haired animal seductress. *well, kind of. You know.
  22. .
  23. Glad to report the Duck is back, having escaped from PGC Mansions and made its way home, a la Incredible Journey. What I thought was a healthy glow from its brief holiday turns out to be just how the Duck is supposed to look - i.e. clean. I'd almost forgotten.
