  1. New post on old thread, but some great recent names:- As previously lauded - SplendidLikePeckham (and so it is) And a new one I really like, albeit somewhat randomly - theratprincess
  2. OK, to be less childish in my response - and slightly to repeat what Citizen said - there's a definite sniff of sanctimoniousness and smugly enjoying judging others about this thread. It's just so easy to look down on other people's attempts at the difficult job of parenting, and when you don't even have any real information about it, frankly I find it distasteful. Perhaps the parents were ill. Or have other children who were ill and needed care. Perhaps they are in fact the worst parents in the whole wide world, and we should take their children away from them and feel good about ourselves. But what purpose does it serve to sit in holy judgement when we haven't a clue what's actually going on? Well, I've just re-read my post and I'm massively over-reacting. But I'll let it stand and take the hits which I guess I'm going to get. Edited because even in mid-strop I can't suggest that anyone was saying the kids should be taken from their parents. Clearly no-one was saying that and I'm not implying they were.
  3. Judgywudgy was a bear.
  4. PeckhamRose, your post with the carrot cake and the Great Greyhound Doping Scandal really made me laugh. thanks!
  5. Really? That's strange, they did last week. Thanks for confirming you spoke to the volunteers-I'll go along on Friday and have a look for myself.
  6. Exactly, Taper. Why not ask one of the volunteers what was being done, or calling to find out, instead of jumping in with a speculative and hostile post? Or better yet volunteer some of your own time and help them make the best use of their resources? The Garden is a fantastic thing to have nearby. Btw, for all you keen gardeners out there, they'll gladly accept any old plant pots- I never knew what to do with them before.

*floats over in unfeasibly large sunglasses on lilo equipped with drinks tray* OK, I've got a Mojito (not from A.B. of course), a Cosmopolitan, a frosty San Miguel, a Pimms and something purply-red in a tall glass with a sparkly thing and a paper brolly. What'll it be?

*enters through French window from the QRG* Did I just see a red-haired man dematerialising in the Quiet Room? ARGH! My hat! Get that damn' fox out of here!
  9. I wonder whether the ebook will change the way we read? (inevitably everyone will end up getting one for the reasons of convenience that have already been listed above... first to take on holiday... then to take on the commute. And of course our homes will continue to be stuffed with books, although natives of the digital age will think we are weird) If you have 160 books at your command and you're sitting on a beach or a train, will you not be choose to flit from book to book and end up reading scraps of books rather than whole ones in sequence? On a related point a friend of mine recently sent me an interesting if speculative article about the Internet changing the way we think and even the way pathways are forged in our brains - as you read, you 'power browse', follow clickthroughs and zip about until the concept of concentrating on one thing for a long time becomes harder. I can PM it to anyone interested - he sent it to me as an email and it's too long to post. Edit: clearly the internet is doing nothing for my brain - it's only just occurred to me to google a link to the article
  10. It's not just people who spend that he's pleasant to - I've only ever bought a scrap of fabric from the guy and he was perfectly nice to me.
  11. Is it legal to employ staff under 12? I think that sounds most naughty. Sorry G&B - couldn't resist. Well done to a great business.
  12. The guy at the fabric shop is fine in my experience. The guy at the stationers is fine in my experience (as a number of people on the thread you quoted agree).

Ooh, and I got all worried about our own dear Citizen for a minute there. *goes back to paying no attention*

Ah Comrades, you are hhhere at llast. *pours frosty glasses of vodka without spilling a vowel anywhere* Do you like my furry hat?
  15. What Keef and *Bob* said. I imagine that Toby and crew just hate the EDF now, and understandably so.
  16. djfitz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is that two mornings in a row you've got up late > now? Sounds like it's time to play "Change The > Day". Was that for me? No. Normal time today - 6. Tempted by SeanMac's 'take the bus' theory but that would mean getting up earlier, and for me 6 is a kind of watershed. Anything earlier than that (except for a plane) is just bleugh. And CambyOz I'd really like to be one of those fit, steel-bottomed people. I just don't think I'd survive the first 2 months... :)
  17. I really don't think it's for me. Quite apart from logistical things like no shower at the office and how do I stop my clothes getting crumpled, cycling is just too frightening for the unfit and wobbly. I'd be bound to end up under a bus, and then how guilty would you feel, MM and PR? I usually get an earlier train which is a lot more civilised, but due to the influence of some Forumites who Know Who They Are got up late today.

  19. Not sure that they were, although they pop up in a lot of pre-historic, fur-bikini-wearing movies, so perhaps I'm wrong.. I usually get an earlier and more civilised train, on which I can sit down and for a few minutes read my book. Today I was late out of bed because of the evil influence of People Who Know Who They Are. But I have to say that I'd rather get even a horrible crowded train than cycle. I don't have a means to shower and change at work and even if I did, how do you stop your suit and shirt getting crumpled in your bag? Crucially, however, cycling is fine for the fit and confident but for the unfit and wobbly it's terrifying, and I'd probably end up with a broken head.
  20. It can be if you like. I've got one, it's quite nice. Only that would be non-ED specific and I might get Lounged.
  21. ...but what a Godawful commute this morning. Anyone else try to get the 7.51 (cancelled due to 'passenger illness on a previous train' - eh??) and then have to squeeze onto the late 8.05 along with 50,000 other rain-sodden wage slaves? And my heart went out to the poor woman who dropped her iPod onto the track and had to watch it glinting unattainably only 4 feet away. Thanks for listening. P.S. Not just posting this to annoy our new pal LuvSnailz.
  22. Oh HonaloochieB, I thought you loved me. How could you misunderstand me so. Of course not, I envisaged Lee (or Leigh) leaping athletically onto a motorboat and vrooming off into the sunset a la Bacardi ad.
  23. How about that, Ladygooner, I always thought it was quay. *hops on bus (without Gus)*

*slides into Quiet Room while boss is in meeting* Why, boys and girls, a Russian themed party in the Quiet Room? What an idea. Anyone for shots of perfectly chilled vodka and generous chunks of caviar?
  25. Not by text, letter or phone. In person is the only civilised way to do it.
