Yuo're right, I think their is a conflation with craft ale (which was the movement started in the US in the 70s) and real ale (or at leaast micro breweries of any ilk), but that's in part due to the influence of the experimental approach to many of the traditional brewers (see analogy above). Even St Peter's (lovely stuff) who go to great pains to dissosciate themselves from craftiness, admit they like to mess about with smoked hops, whiskey and sucjlike from time to time. "What I have detested for 30 years is the derrivative mass market rubbish that the majority of us drink. But hey that is what capitalism is about." The McDonalds effect or Sturgeon's Law!!!

peeps are pretty good at trollspotting, and anyone coming simply to stir up trouble is quickly dealt with, but if you have specifics Louisa, then be sure to report them.

It's the cup, it's a toss up between goign for the obvious or calling the (almost) inevitable upset. Keep it close is always good advice in this game but goes double for the cup i reckon

If I'd have written that and saw how it could easily be read as accusing someone of being racist I most definitely would have followed it up with "that reads like x, apologies, it certainly wasn't intended that way" The rest of your spat is your (plural) business.

I admit my jaw dropped when I read it as the comma, strictly speaking, means the clauses "you're not exactly snow white, and we're taking racial hatred here" are related. Then I realised that's not what he meant, but instead of trying to make that clear as usual PD just upped the confrontational ante. I guess what he meant was "Chuckle? you've made me fall about. Behave, you're not exactly snow white, and we're taking racial hatred here [not club rivalry], or are you missing the point on purpose?" But of course the point was that club rivalry was exactly what we were talking about, we had moved on from racism to players moving to rival clubs and club hatred. Anyway, I'll take silence as an implicit apology to quids that what he wrote was easily inferred as an accusation of racism even if it wasn't (and i really don't think it was) implied. Aparently there is a nascent craft beer movement here, though sadly nothing nearby. I better get my microbrewery up and running fast so I can get in there at the start. But roll on saturation!!!

Having just moved to a place where beer is about 20 years behind, i can tell you how lucky you all are!!! I just had an attractively presented bottle of irish pale ale, it was like having a can of Bass in the 80s. Yeuch. My remaining options are a couple of stouts, flourescent ciders or heineken/carlsberg/budweiser. I .. am ...... in .. beer .... hell!!!!

I think my brain autocorrected that anyway. Anyone who forswears craft ale (or lager) on any principle other than taste is not exposing the emperor's new clothes, more cutting their nose to spite their face. I'm bored of saying this, but all it is is about breaking the old rules and traditions and trying new things. Some work some don't, some are shit, some are mind blowingly delicious. To draw a parallel, it's done for beer what new world producers have done for wine in the face of much resistance from the fusty old world producers (most of whom have adopted many of their techniques, Rioja has improved dramatically over the last decade) and most particularly, snobs!!!
