  1. I'm not surprised that there is suspicion around the postal voting system given http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2010/sep/06/men-jailed-attempted-postal-vote-fraud and there are other examples but I linked this one because I know how much you all love the Guardian.....
  2. According to this- http://www.migrationwatchuk.org/briefing-paper/11.36 - Labour may have relaxed immigration controls to boost its core vote....maybe the surge in UKIP is a backlash
  3. I have a Southwark leaflet from some years ago about bonfires and it says 1 bonfire per month at dusk for 1 hour. Also I think I read somewhere that a Yule log is allowed to be burned over the xmas period (?). Anyway- it stands to reason and common sense that unless we want to go back to the old smogs (and it will be 2x as bad since loads of what were single houses are now 2 or more flats) we are considerate.
  4. You could take a pic- but do not let the person see you...
  5. Box of protein bars are about 12.00 on line
  6. All this fossil fuel stuff has been going on for decades- what is gob-smackingly amazing is that plastic bags are STILL being produced in alarming numbers. They all talk the talk....as for beef production, it was well known decades ago that McDonalds were clearing tracts of rain Forest to farm cows. And methane(from farts) is the most potent greenhouse gas. So it appears that even the easiest preventative measures are not being employed, and most individuals are doing whatever they want and sod the environment!
  7. Does not look like bombs will be very effective since the terrorists, like the Palestinian terrorists, have built networks of tunnels under the ground. The pictures on the BBC make you think that they have been a long time in the making. Germany has said it will commit 1200 troops.....
  8. You can tell the state of some of the dwellings because the entire area is like an extended building site!
  9. Southwark council sold off at a massive profit- all the 'decent working class' council homes after fixing them up...see Dog Kennel hill. And they are letting all their street properties rot - to suffer the same fate I daresay. ED is being socially cleansed like many areas of London that are being 'gentrified'
  10. When there are large populations living in close proximity there seems to be a tendency for people to band together with others of the same ilk for a sense of security in identity. Unfortunately sometimes these people construct their own group idea of what is 'normal' and then they start singling out the characters who do not appear to belong to a particular 'group'. When I first moved to ED I met a few people who had actually paid for elocution lessons to get rid of regional and cockney accents as they felt they were a real drawback to success.....
  11. Of course they are here already, and there are known IS men amongst the 6,000 lined up in Calais. From what I know from reading about Daesh it is akin to Hitler and the Nazis in its efforts at world domination and genocide (of infidels, and the Shia).
  12. Yes, actually stabbing someone on school premises is very serious. At least one school I have worked in would NEVER involve the police in incidents involving stealing, drugs, and possession of weapons because the head believed that the school was the only place of safety for some of the pupils, from ALL of the outside world.....
  13. And when they opened the tunnel there was me thinking we were at risk from rabies!
  14. There were going to be tax cuts next year.I heard an alarming phone-in on the radio a few weeks ago where a business woman was trying to recruit a full-time member of staff. A woman turned up and said she only wanted to do a certain number of hours because she can make up the salary with tax-credits...and according to the business woman this attitude was common...and when you think about it who wants to flog themselves to death in a low paid job for 5 days a week when they can get the same money for 3 days a week + tax credits?
  15. I thought the Vikings etc went in for ceremonial burning routinely...
  16. I would second exactly what apbremer said except for 'Bleeding Hearts' I would have use the original version of that cliche
  17. I hope Tessa Jowell is proud of herself......
  18. Since we have all been living with political correctness for so long it is no surprise that as soon as someone makes an ill-judged comment (although people do run off at the mouth from time to time and think it is clever) someone will jump down their throat. I was in a meeting once and an elderly chap said "I don't wish to be a n***** in the wood pile but..." all hell broke loose...
  19. The Harris school in Forest Hill Road has staff standing at the entrance at the end of the day, and some schools even have staff escorting the kids onto the buses at the end of the day. However, if a wayward one gets it into his/her head they will find a way
  20. So money has been squirreled away in anticipation of having to spend more on intelligence services and specialist troops...
  21. Inside croydon is a well known leftist attack dog...and the Labourites are against their schools being taken out of L.A. control. However, with a Tory government schools are vulnerable to the cuts at the front line imposed by Labour councils- so they are better off out of L.A. control. Staff turnover in London is not a very good indicator because if you have worked in an inner city school, especially London schools with the inherent challenges - then you have a much better chance of promotion elsewhere......
  22. That is not how you spell your road......
  23. Blah Blah- She is 'right' to say what she said because she is doing what the opposition has to do-i.e. criticise everything the present government does- but it does nothing to reassure parents and the community. As far as the knives from France thing goes I remember years ago my brother went on a school trip to France and the whole group came back with flick knives- they were 13 years old...fortunately one of the class were being cocky with his and the teacher searched all of them and confiscated them all
  24. How predictable- I see the new MP has taken the opportunity to slag off the government over the reduction in police. Less police on the streets = more stabbings in the playground. With that kind of logic who needs Jeremy Corbyn....I thought Tessa Jowell was deluded but.....
