Remarkable piece of history ? I think that's a bit of a stretch. It's a plaque marking where stocks were situated, once, many years ago. They're not there now, they've gone, it's just a marker. Why waste land for a mere marker ? Every area had stocks, it was commonplace. Dislike of property developers (if that's even the case) should not come in to it.

Unfortunately beloved do get forgotten because we all die do you have to be realistic - how can you be beloved of you great great great grandfather when your parents never knew him ?! However true the "you're just dead" bit is, there's probably less harsh ways that could be said !

Beer Drinking in the Goose Green Playground
KidKruger replied to DearBBC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Isn't this all really just about some parents being jealous because they've spotted other adults who had the savvy to pack a couple of ice-cold beers and crack 'em open at the playground, while their kids do their thing on the climbing frame ? -

The 124 Lordship Lane eyesore
KidKruger replied to Ms Blueberry's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Isn't this all really a reflection of how jealous parents are of seeing another adult crack open a can of chilled beer, when they're gagging for one themselves - but don't have the front to do it themselves ? -
uncleglen that sounds really heavy if people have actually insulted you on the street for carrying your stuff in a plastic bag. How did you respond and did they apologise when you responded ? Also, what did they actually say ? Sounds horrible, last thing you need when minding your own business is comments about your choice of device for carrying stuff. You could tell the blow-in, over-privileged yuppies that at least you're CARRYING your stuff instead of dragging those poncey wheelie cases that the soft-handed, never-done-an-honest-days-work-in-their-lives toffs seem to enjoy dragging into the paths of genuine original ED residents !

DaveR you should be a presenter on 'How'. -
Everything is easy in the US. Cheapest I found was to use my iphone for inbound calls and wifi at restaraunts/libraries/hotels. For US calls (if you want to use a phone as a .....phone) go to Walmart, Target or similar stores which are everywhere and buy a basic device for $14.99 + a card to top-up on calls. that's one way. Others on here may have had different experiences.

Simon, I am sorry to hear about your Mother's passing which under any circumstances will always be traumatic. To find the door chained like that and not being able to gain access must have been awful. People do post on this forum with a little humour / tongue in cheek and I'm sure, with knowledge of even a hint of the circumstances, would perhaps have worded it differently. But they didn't know. The street party organisers that I know (I was involved two years ago) are very nice people and I'm sure there was no intentional oversight on their, or your mother's neighbours part. A lovely old lady lives opposite me on CPR, she has lived in the house all her life and never moved away or got married. She's getting frailer by the year and although I do pop over to fix leaks, change bulbs and help with the odd repair, she is a staunch loner. She won't come over for a cup of tea to sit in the sun or at Xmas for a sherry. I bring her pies and she gives me cooking apple from her tree, but there's definitely a 'line' with her that one cannot cross and that's entirely her choice which I respect. If she passed (which she will) her brother, who lives outside London I believe, may conclude her neighbours were negligent or didn't care, which wouldn't be accurate. The reason I'm saying this is the situation may not have been as neglectful as you portray, sometimes older people are extremely independent and being so old, with most of their peers having already died, prefer their own company. Of course, I didn't know your mother, so I could be entirely wrong, but sometimes there's a brighter truth to the impression one has received. The lady I speak of, Evelyn, has lived there for 83 years and is I believe the longest continuos resident of the street - but it wouldn't surprise me if there's someone been here longer as people live so long these days.

"New residents in ED have their head up their arse that they have no idea of the real world. All they are worried about is how I can protect my over paid house,s value. Lets wish for a new financial crash and see how things change." Chip on your shoulder or what bro ?

Not the sort of bowl you'd want your cornflake(s) in then !

it's easy just google / youtube it. the bits you can get from various places, you can try Seans, Dulwich DIY, MKK in Nunhead, Wickes Catford. drill the holes, put plugs in (or use masonry screws/nails), space bracket if needed with some tubing, fit bracket.

Cool thanks Otta. We got the ball rolling then ! I got a drinking buddy, but I'll be playing with myself. Not cool. Especially in the Castle.

I did poll about 2-3 years ago and had a few interested folks, I think I waited a bit for few more to make a full night of it but then I got sidetracked. So I'll try again, with vigour this time. I am thinking a pool night early in a week, possibly at the Castle or Cavanans, depends on numbers. Anybody fancy it ? We can play straight knockout through to the final. Let me know and we can get it on, how about end of June ? Let me know on this thread if you're interested.

robbin. I used to think the Iceland store was a bit beneath me, but having seen the EDF thread espousing it's benefits I paid a visit. I was pleasantly surprised they sell a lot of the same processed tosh that stores such as co-op sell, but there are some useful items. The fruit can be ok, frozen stuff if you like that sort of thing (I get frozen fish for the cat), the usual basics such as teabags (more expensive than waitrose), butter, milk, eggs. Try it. You might surprise yourself. You twat.

Doesn't this just translate to: 1. From my memory I reckon I had a great time back in the day. 2. You lot who haven't lived round here as long as me will never understand that. 3. Only I can really appreciate the way things were, once, according to my memory. 4. No matter how much you like ED at the moment, my memory tells me that it was better back in my day, according to my memory, regardless of who you are and what you know. 5. The best time has gone and all that's left is shit. 6. I am unable to move on, times have changed, but I cannot and will not adapt to it. 7. I can blurt-out whatever I like to talk-up the past / put-down the present, but you can't challenge my view, because you're not me and only I know the truth. 8. You're all wrong and I'm all right. 9. If you challenge me then you're a bully and part of a clique. 10 If you challenge me have no grounds to do so because you're not me. 11. Back to 1. And Repeat. Ad Infinitum.

Louisa: "I genuinely miss those times." Pretty much sums-up what the last couple of pages have been about. Foxy: "You have no Idea how brilliant ED used to be. Unless you were there". Hold on, it's not exactly difficult to imagine a friendly atmosphere in a pissed-up pub , a bit of banter and a few characters at the bar. This wasn't particular to ED and that's where this jizzing over rose-tinted spectacles has got silly. Everyone knows what a decent local pub can be like, this is England FFS. Just because there's different people around now doesn't mean they're not having as good if not a better time than you had. This persistent argument that everyone else doesn't quite "get it" is a little facile IMO.

BTW Foxy. I had a sandwich in the Castle on Saturday, it was ?2 and was a proper basic sandwich... it was LOVELY... Just like the Great Exhibition ones are (but 1/3 of the price). Crazy eh. ?

Foxy what planet you on mate, repeated fights in a pub and no-one gets hurt ? Doesn't work like that in reality - sounds nice though..

Beer Drinking in the Goose Green Playground
KidKruger replied to DearBBC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm sure none of the parents in GG swing park who are upset by someone sipping alcohol would NEVER dream of wheeling their prams into a pub in ED. All those people drinking alcohol in front of their children, perish the thought. -
Foresters was rough IMO. I had one set-to in there where one 'regular' challenged me in the bog. That's just plain wrong ! There was (for non-regulars) a kind of sense of menace, personally I'm OK with a bit of edge but I've met people who didn't want the aggro.

Ha ha !!! No, not at all sure (now). I was watching BoxNation and got all excited when they announced a whole card with Fury and Eubank on. About 30mins in, my mate pointed out that we'd already seen the show in Feb. I did get a d?j? vu feeling - then he broke the bubble. Good spot. Past bouts really shouldn't feature in a list of forthcoming events !
