  1. jimlad48, I hope you weren't referring to my post when you said this. I spent several years living in an area controlled by a CPZ and it was much worse than any 'hyperbole' you think is on display. I would have so much more respect for you if you could recognise the wider implications of the choices people are making without consideration for what it means for everyone else, And, for that matter, the whole of East Dulwich. jimlad48 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Goodness me there is a lot of hyperbole on display > about CPZ. 2. Simply put...in order for people to have a perceived chance of parking nearer to 'their' home on 'their' street [even though we all pay Council Tax and no-one owns the roads], we all will have to live differently, and with much more stress. Whether you have a car or not, you will require permits for every visitor to your home, whether its for 10 mins or for hours. These permits cost a significant amount of money. You will need to pay for parking in all the other roads covered by the CPZ as 'your' permit only covers your road and one or two next to it. For those of us who bought diesel cars because the govt advised it was best now face paying ?3.25 AN HOUR to park in a bay that, without the CPZ, is free. Gone will be the days of browsing, window shopping, relaxing or taking your time. You will have to get used to clock watching, being constantly aware of the need to pay, to mark time, to note time, to use visitor permits, deciding whether or not to give a visitor a permit if they only drop by for a few minutes so you stand guard at the window looking for wardens, the over-running of permit time, the forgetting, the standing in a shop or cafe for too long, the regular sight of more wardens, the anxiety, the annoyance when you have paid for a permit but still can't find a space, the cost, the lack of flexibility, the loss of casual shopping and the fact that parking times remains in your mind throughout when you are parked in a time-limited bay, the extra road markings, signs, changes, new lines to be aware of whilst you are driving. And then the ?85 fines because, although you now spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about parking, vouchers, wardens and time, we are all human and life does not fit into one hour slots. Be careful what you wish for in wanting to park nearer to 'your' home. Think about the impact on others. Because once it is in place, there will be no going back.

  8. Dear All, there was a fantastic and generous response from the kind people who contributed containers to Peckham Foodcycle. We filled each and every one with extra food for our appreciative guests to take away. Our Instagram page shows off what our volunteers do, so please check out our activities! ...https://www.instagram.com/peckham_foodcycle/?hl=en We plan to have our last meal this year on Wednesday, 19th December and intend it to be a Christmas celebration! Our volunteers are contributing everything we can, including decorating the hall and cooking a fabulous three course meal with whatever suprlus food we gather on that day. Our guests are only there for a couple of hours but we want it to be a generous and memorable session, recognising how special they are and giving whatever support we can. REASON FOR THE REQUEST IS.....we are hoping to give our guests a Christmas gift through a Christmas Raffle. We are doing what we can but we have approx 40 guests and it would be great if we could make sure they all feel important! Do you have anything you would happily part with as a gift? Toiletries? Food treats? Something to keep you warm? Something to give you a bit of a boost? Something that says you are great?!! If you do, we would really appreciate it if you can donate an item for our Christmas Foodcycle session. We would need it by Tues 18th Dec. And do you mind me adding this...I am happy to come and pick up ANY contribution. I live in ED. However, if you live further out and would be happy to drop it at my flat [although I really want to be able to say thank you, personally], then that would mean a lot so that we don't use up other resources, eg by driving. [please pm me for my address]. If you have got this far, Thank You! If you want to contribute, however small, that would be awesome! kind regards, Jacqui.x
  9. Can I offer a tiny piece of advice for dealing with stale smells...? https://www.aesop.com/dk/en/p/home/home/post-poo-drops/ Best thing ever invented, 4 drops needed, lasts for years. Great for the obvious, but.... lingering smells, curry, beer, sweaty guests, doggy aromas, you name it. And if I have cooked something that I don't want to smell when I awake the next morning, a few drops in a small bowl of water and..hey presto!
  10. Jon has just be round to clean a year's worth of filth off my windows [eek]. Hard working, friendly and very nice guy with decent prices. Recommended to anyone wanting a good window cleaner. 07908 953257
  11. The last quarter of the year is a good time as people come back from their holidays/back to school, then look to 'be in by Christmas' Unfortunately, this is more like the last sixth of the year! Unless, of course, you can exchange and complete quickly..that might appeal to some buyers. Alternatively, try for a short period then take it off until Spring..?
  12. Don't go anywhere near this ATM.. I went to use it once in the summer and it had clearly been tampered with as it was partly hanging away from the wall!
  13. Thank you MarkT. Perfectly put.
  14. After last week's fiasco..posted on here about no internet or tv for the best part of a week, I was incensed to find I have been billed for a whole month, despite assurances [when I called] that my account would be credited for no service last week [no, I didn't believe them, but it added fuel to my fire when I called them yesterday]. After half an hour of a nit-picking call centre gentleman trying to count up which days I should be refunded for, based on when I called 'and spoke to someone',...there is no record of the many calls where you listen to a recorded message about 'your area'...even though they confirm your postcode and mobile number.. ["So, you have NO record of how long we had no service in my area? The promise that my bill would reflect this is a lie then..?"]... I pointed out that I expected recompense for time taken to make 16 phone calls, the lack of internet, lack of tv, loss of programmes-to-be-recorded, cost of extra data for my phone, general disruption to my day and now a 30min+ call after they promised me they would not charge me for a service I DIDN'T GET!!!!....I said 'if you are only going to be offering me ?s, you can put me through to cancelling my contract right now. He couldn't pass me on quick enough. After another long rant with 'Retentions', and clarification of what I had put up with, I ended up with a ?50 credit, a reduction of my monthly bill from ?66pm to ?25pm for a year, then ?48pm after that, slightly faster internet speed and slightly reduced tv bundle that still includes all the channels I watch. And although I was probably paying too much to start with, and MAY get a better deal elsewhere, I reckon I will be ?542 better off this coming year as against if I had done nothing at all. That will pacify me through the next few times the service is down, by which time I will be ready to do battle again.
  15. re-posted to original thread
  16. Got it back Thursday after 4 days off and now it?s gone again, not even two full days later.
  17. Perhaps we should organise a mass exodus...
  18. Yup, ONCE AGAIN, no internet/tv for the last 2 days. Many calls to Virgin...finally...?we expect it to be fixed by 17th?.....( 6 days away) ....and? ?And, nothing....?
  19. I tried EVERYTHING. It was this [chemicals] or a flamethrower. In the end, just the spray did the trick, followed by a decent hoover around all the carpet edges. Haven't seen a single moth since. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pest-Expert-Killing-Clothes-approved/dp/B075LH2SDR/ref=sr_1_10?s=outdoors&ie=UTF8&qid=1535037805&sr=1-10&keywords=Pest+Expert

There's one in the chemist in Dulwich Village. I went down there yesterday after FHR post office closed and there wasn't a single person waitig to be served.
  21. I went in this afternoon just as they were locking the door. They have been there 30 years so there were a few tears... Now closed for refurbishment and then new owners. As sidekick said....Nilesh, Anita & Raj you will be very missed. Sorry to see you go.
  22. I stopped going to Gail's after I formally requested that they covered the food on the central table as there are often flies crawling on the cakes and sandwiches. Head office said they took my health concerns seriously. Last time I went in to Gail's in Dulwich Village and Wimbledon there was no coverings and nothing had changed. So, I will be happy to exchange my spinach and taleggio quiche for a Greggs sausage roll any day. It's all about respecting your customers, folks!
  23. NO MORE SPEED HUMPS! For Barry Road, a fully operational speed camera gets my vote.

I thought we were talking about trying to get in and out of a tight parking space? 'wheels facing outwards' might help on the rare occasion that you are on a hill AND your handbrake fails but for the common 'driving out of a tight spot', reversing back into the remaining space, however small, requires the wheels to be straight. If you left the wheels pointing at an angle and tried this, you would just move closer to the kerb. A good driving instructor would tell you 'for the benefit of moving off again, finish parking with your wheels straight'. It's not Balderdash, it's parallel parking.
