Southwark Council cutting back trees on Lordship Lane
Siduhe replied to rMattos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Slightly off topic but I came out of the ED PictureHouse a few years ago to find that TFL had borrowed an open top double decker bus to do the tree trimming down the Lane. I got some great, but slightly fuzzy photos. This was the inside of the bus. April 2016. -
There's also this option if you want to mark posts read on a per board basis...
-
@Jenijenjen - took me a bit to work this out too - If you click on the little green tick or loudspeaker to the left of the thread title that will take you to unread posts in that thread.

There was literally a thread pinned to the top of the board which warned about the changes, the timing, the risks etc. Frankly, I'm astonished that it went as smoothly as it did (and remain very grateful for the people who spent their time and energy keeping this great local resource running, for free). Like it or not, the old forum software was beyond end of life, so an upgrade to a newer format was inevitable.

I think the answer is in the range of responses on this thread. Not every shopper is more likely to spend (or spend more) at a local shop because they have a fancy Jubilee display and I can see why it might work well for Mrs Robinson and less well for say Moxons. I also know that at least some retailers were expecting a lot of people to be away from ED last weekend which may have affected their plans. Nigello has a clear and particular view that it would be better for everyone if things looked "nice" in our local environment, which I completely get and applaud, but it's a way from asking shops to clean up graffiti on their shutters to expecting them to go full-bunting for an event which some but not all people respond to or are interested in.

This one has a band, but you need to book tickets in advance: https://platinumjubilee.gov.uk/event/telegraph-hill-beacon-lighting/

Thanks BB. I've got all my details and if anyone else is in the same situation, you can find your polling station here or on the Electoral Commission Website https://wheredoivote.co.uk/

One question - have people had their polling cards through yet? Mine hasn't arrived (Dulwich Hill), which isn't an issue as I know where to vote, but wondered if it's just me?
-
The only leaflet we have had through the door in my bit of Dulwich Hill is from the Respect My Sex campaign. No canvassers either.

Attempted bike robbery Green Dale / Dulwich Hamlet
Siduhe replied to Beulah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Agree with that Beulah, it's easy to have hindsight and everyone needs to work out their own preference, but as an example - I won't ride on the Surrey Canal Path after dark, even though there are often lot of other cyclists using it. There are two bridges you go under which are quite hidden, and you quite often get groups of people hanging out there, I'm sure with no bad intention, but I've also seen people get pushed off there so I just won't risk it, even though I hate the traffic on the alternative route. Appreciate you raising the awareness of this one. -
You can usually begin HRT as soon as you start experiencing menopausal symptoms, including irregular periods. Plenty of women taking HRT who still experience periods.

You have to go to Lewisham for textile recycling in our part of the borough. I think I last raised this with councillors in 2016 or 2017, and the advice was to use the mobile recycling truck (10am-1pm so no use for anyone working outisde ED and even that service has gone now). I use the Wood Vale. https://lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/wasterecycle/recycling/textile-recycling

It's not local but we've used the Regenerative clinic in Canary Wharf and in Marylebone for administered PCRs for fit to fly and they were excellent - really reliable with results timing - given you need this over a weekend I'd go for the most reliable provider you can.

You may need to reduce the image size, save that and then upload the smaller photo. Loads of ways to do this - I use the ResizeIt app on IOS - more ideas here. /forum/read.php?12,2259360,2259360#msg-2259360

For Meerkat movies the easiest thing is to download the Meerkat app onto your smartphone, log in using your Compare the Market details (assuming you qualify), click Rewards and "How to Use"

oimissus Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Because they're being bullied by the 'just be kind' 'can't see the issue' 'deeply insulting' crowd? I hope they turn up and then refuse to play. You might want to take a step back and spend a little bit of time learning about the Women's team at Dulwich Hamlet before jumping to those sorts of conclusions. I'm not particularly involved but I've been to a few women's games, and my family sponsor a player in the squad and they've always made it clear, as a team they are open to participation and support from trans supporters. Some of them have made that support clear on their bios in the match programs, others have talked about it publicly in response to the abuse and on-line pile on that they've been receiving for being involved in this match. When someone on Mumsnet brands you a "traitor to your sex" because you're going to play a game of football, the world truly has gone mad and none of them deserve the online pile on, on here or anywhere else. Please remember these are real people, a number of which live in this area and read this forum, and the suggestion that they are being bullied into something because they're too weak to stand up for themselves is pretty offensive. If you wouldn't say it to their face, don't say it on here. For the record, I agree that the participation of trans-women in competitive sport raises some extremely complex issues which need to be addressed to protect women's sport, as does the access of self-identifying people to single sex spaces and the risks that poses to women including trans-women. But unlike the majority of people on here, I would guess, I have direct experience of working with and being friends with people who are trans and gender non-conforming - most of whom are a lot younger than me. The idea that women who are transitioning are trying to "take something away" from women or are inherently a danger to women is laughable when you look at the actual lived experiences of the vast majority of people in that category. But it's easy to lump them all into a largely dehumanising category when you only ever focus on the extreme examples (on both sides).

Buildings insurance - a reasonable amount being asked?
Siduhe replied to north2south's topic in The Lounge
And may be worth checking that the Freeholder isn't receiving a commission for placing the insurance policy with the proposed provider. If they are not a professional freeholder then unlikely, but the commissions for professional freeholders can be substantial. -
Depending on how senior their QC was, ?26,000 may not have gone that far. I know of several specialist QCs who charge ?1,000+ per hour. Also those fees require VAT to be paid in addition.

Completely agreed, but the volume of leakage is increased substantially by TW's shoddy approach to repairs and to the major works they undertake. Take the replacement of the pipe and water main along Melford and Underhill earlier this year - a 4 week planned job took over 3 months because Thames Water cracked the gas pipe and gas main serving about 30 households in their repair works (so most of us had no gas and central heating for 5 days). Let's be charitable and say the gas main was old too and it wasn't their fault. But guess how many times they have been back to repair the brand new water pipe they put in less than 9 months ago? At least 5 times that I am aware of, including one repair which left the road in such a bad condition (protruding access cover, which was still leaking) that it was really dangerous to cars and cycles. Southwark actually came and fixed that one as an emergency and back charged it to Thames Water. So I'm all for giving them a break on the number of pipes to be replaced and repairs to be made. I just wish they would do a proper job and not a bodge/patch it up and get the hell out of dodge approach they seem to have.

New electric double-deck buses will be running on route 63
Siduhe replied to jazzer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There was a (limited) feasibility study by TFL about 6, maybe 8 years ago, led by one of our local councillors at the time to see if the bus could be extended to pass Honor Oak Station. The proposed turning route was Honor Oak Park, Brockley Rise, right at the roundabout and then left at the lights back onto Honor Oak Park. From memory it was considered unfeasible due to the difficulties of getting a double decker bus to turn off Stondon Park left at the lights back onto Honor Oak Park (the turn is too sharp a left) and the cost of making the current one way system on that little bit of Honor Oak Park that meets Brockley Rise to be two way for buses (which was the other option). There was also some comment about having to remove the parking on Honor Oak Park by One Tree Hill to facilitate the flow of the bus and an issue about the route of the 63 and the N63 then being different (as the N63 follows the route of the 363, it doesn't stop at the Forest Hill Tavern) I remember thinking at the time it didn't seem that there was any real effort put in by TFL to find solutions, but it was definitely looked at, and roundly rejected, after a fairly sustained campaign. -
Nigello, what you say makes perfect sense, but I think what ITATM and others are saying is that it isn't being used in that way at FHGP. It's being used as a barrier to accessing services that have previously been provided to patients with ongoing issues and to drip-feed care. I don't want to share someone else's personal info but my better half has experienced recent sub-standard care for a long term condition, including being cut off from medication he is supposed to take daily by a process very similar to what others have described, and it's taken three months and extreme effort to sort. It certainly wasn't as easy as asking to see a doctor (the very first thing we did) My personal view is that it's not lack of organisation but a deliberate strategy to manage their internal systems and backlog, but when it puts individual care at risk it's not acceptable.

Dangerous driving - Harvester Junction - Needs reporting
Siduhe replied to Monkey's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
zerkalo, very welcome - it's a subject close to my heart. What really comes out to me from the TFL response is that this is all about funding (and the news that they have to buy some land to make the crossing work - presumably a bit by Cox's Walk to expand the pedestrian area, but who knows?). There's no way TFL is going to have the full funding in the near future - 2023 seems aspirational at best. What might make sense is getting the Dulwich Wood Councillors and Helen Hayes involved to see what alternative sources of funding there are - CGS or similar? If Southwark would come up with part of the funding, then maybe TFL could find the rest? So definitely worth engaging with Helen Hayes but the one thing that would make this happen more quickly is some cold, hard cash it seems to me.
