  1. It depends on what you want, all the local markets are different. The one at the Horniman is a farmers market so if its fruit and veg you want that's probably your best bet nearby. North Cross market is more about cooked food, clothes etc http://www.horniman.ac.uk/visit/events/horniman-farmers-market Brockley Market is also farmers market and is very popular. I think the market in Peckham closed down.
  2. There is a group like this that been running for 4 years and is always welcoming new arrivals in the What's On Section. Take a look.
  3. Is that Mel's house Sue? I walk past it all the time and from the outside it always reminds me of Blue Mountain Cafe's mosaics.
  4. Ok, they are at 4,650 quid in just over 4 days! That's amazing. Hopefully, they'll get the last 350 quid tonight and this will be a done deal
  5. If you haven't done it yet, you can tour all the street art in the area. It went up mostly one year during the Dulwich festival. There is a book about it that a lot of the local shops sell. I'm sure that could help you find your way around. There was a house the artists transformed in addition the the murals but that (as was always planned) has been knocked down. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/picturegalleries/10061860/Street-artists-transform-Dulwich.html?frame=2564732 http://streetartlondon.co.uk/tours/booking/
  6. The Old Nunhead has gigs all the time. Check out their web page. So does the EDT on Lordship Lane which hosts live jazz nights, theatre events and a montly film night The Bigger Picture which shows cult classics and art house films. Il Mirto on Melbourne Grove looks like a whole in the wall but is really a hidden gem.
  7. Its not batty. Its a way to measure both liquids and solids with one system and without the need to weigh things. A cup size is a container that would hold 8 fluid oz. If a recipe asks for a half a cup of walnuts and a cup of milk you can make the entire thing without scales which Americans don't need to use nearly as much as over here.
  8. Also, I'd suggest you post this in the main section. This section is largely for taking the piss!
  9. What have you already seen? Below are some of my favorite things in the general area (not just ED) and almost none of them are hidden. If you tell people what you are into- music / sport / etc or go to the What's On section you'll find out about all the local gigs, book clubs, meet ups etc 1. The Brick House Cafe (slightly off the main drag) though there are lots of great cafes and restaurants in the area. That's its own thread 2. North Cross Road market on a Saturday 3. The Picture House cinema 4. Dulwich Picture Gallery- they currently have a great exhibit by Escher which is amazing 5. The Horniman Gardens and Natural History museum 6. Brockwell Lido 7. Dulwich Park 8. Susan James Supper Club can be fun 9. Alleyn Park Garden Centre (West Dulwich) 10. Bel Air Park (West Dulwich) 11. The Rooftop cinema in the summer in Peckham 12. Peckham Rye Park 13. Dulwich running club / park run 14. Tennis clubs (various) and squash court near Sainsbury 15. Dulwich Hamlet football team http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/football-revolution-as-disillusioned-fans-head-for-the-non-league-9810932.html http://www.theguardian.com/global/2015/aug/23/dulwich-hamlet-londons-most-hipster-football-club
  10. Yes, there is one near Heber Road. Apparently the waiting list for a slot is huge but its a great idea. I wish there were more of them even though they are a bit of an eyesore!
  11. 8 fluid oz and all of the equivalent of that in ml as has already been provided.
  12. I would read that notwithstanding meaning 'excluding'. I work with legal contracts all the time and I'd say that you would be very unlucky for anyone to interpret it otherwise if it was brought to court. I hope you find the right solution for your family.
  13. By the way, M&S have confirmed the store is due to open in July. James Barber has confirmed it.
  14. Exactly Mic Mac. This local ED cafe owner is approaching the dreaded 10 establishment limit that turns him and his cafes from friend to foe...
  15. Yes, it is 100% true. You can ask the people who work there, they are very open about it Jeremy. Sue, I think they changed the name because it was a totally different concept from the 3 other Locale's they run. They have always been super open about the situation. I remember when I asked about when they took over and my server said it was the same people but as Locale wasn't working well in the ED branch they wanted to experiment with something new. I think they tested it out at first as a pop up type thing at one of the local Dulwich festivals (maybe Goose Green). Some of the history of this is definitely on the forum. I have been going senile lately but I'm pretty sure I'm remembering this correctly.
  16. I think the issue people (including myself) sometimes have with chains are three things: 1. A lot of chains end up being quite bland as part of the success of a mega chain is appealing to a really broad audience 2. Knowing the proprietors in a world that is generally full of large faceless corporations feels quaint in a way that people crave as its missing from so much of everyday life. A lot of our lives aren't on a human scale anymore (even at the GP how often can you see the same doctor!) and given human beings lived in a totally different way for much of human history, there is an odd psychological craving for that closeness. 3. Its nice to feel that everywhere has its own character. Its why people like travelling etc. When you feel like you see the same thing everywhere you go and there is nothing new to discover or unique it can feel oppressively monotonous. These days, retail is much more about experiences and this plays into it as well. For all these reasons I do tend to support my local small businesses and why I do love ED's retail character. Nevertheless, I flat out love some chains. I'd love a Nando's to open nearby! We all know Louisa wants a Space NK. And I certainly wouldn't begrudge any small business owner (and let's get real, 10 small outlets is still peanuts) their growing success if their product is good. Some business owners get point number 3 well- ToastED, The Flying Pig, and Yamma Mommo are all part of restaurant groups but each restaurant in the group has its own name and a different menu (for the Flying Pig its owned by the same people who run the 3 Locale restaurants in London). I prefer that approach though it obviously doesn't allow you to capitalize off of your previous success as easily.
  17. We already have an M&S food opening (replacing the previous chain store Iceland) and we already have Lloyd's pharmacy (instead of boots), GBK, Sainsbury Local and Costa. The vast majority of East Dulwich isn't chains (defined as 10 units ore more above) and even fewer are the mega-chains. Some other poster did that math's and she worked out that 80% were small / independent businesses. I think though that most if not all of them would open here if they found the premises. McDonald's has been in Peckham pre-gentrification and they have a shop in Hampstead. Trust me, they'd have been here already if they could find a unit-- I've heard they are looking at one of the pubs owned by the Dulwich estate but who knows if that's true.
  18. Our own Blue Mountain cafe have a branch in Penge and in Gypsy Hill. I'm sure other local businesses from East Dulwich will open there as well.
  19. I agree regarding Peckham as the units there are huge. There are a lot of areas less affluent than East Dulwich that already have lots of chains. I think if major chains thought that it was feasible to be here, they'd be here already. The large retail units on LL already have GBK, caffe nero, White Stuff, Oliver Bonas (which is medium sized in my opinion) and the chain supermarkets are in them. I could see a chain moving in the the old ED Deli site when the owner decides to stop doing pop-ops. Also, Foxtons is an obvious unit for another major large scale chain. I'm really not sure where else could realistically work for most large chains. Smaller chains that only recently were single stand alone businesses like Wahaca might still make the logistics of small units work though. What chains are on Earls Court Rd and how large are the units there?
  20. Okay, by that definition most of the shops on LL aren't chains as very few have 10 branches (more like 3-5 across London for many of them). To be fair, despite having a store in Singapore, Meat Liquor has less than 10 branches at the moment. I'm sure its their ambition to have more than that though. I wish them luck with their plans to expand as I don't see why a small business owner shouldn't want to grow or why a local business owner shouldn't still be supported as they become more successful. nashoi Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > IPA is a type of beer not a company. > > Meat Liquor boasts of being an international chain > as they have a branch in Singapore with plans to > open more overseas. > > Honest Burger with about 10 branches is also > definitely a chain IMHO. > > In New York the legal definition is 10 branches or > more, as far as I'm aware there is no such > definition over here, personally I'd say once the > owner is no longer involved in the day to day > running of a branch and you have standardised > menus then you're definitely in chain territory.
  21. Meat Liquor really isn't anymore of a chain than the other shops on Lordship lane, almost all of which have more than one branch. The idea that we can only support a small business owner of they have no ambition or aren't successful enough to open more than one store seems perverse.
  22. I remember it being in Peckham though as a pop up it probably was in loads of places before finding its feet. Its remarkable how well they are doing after opening their first shop only 5 years ago. They now have London branches in Shoreditch, Islington, Brixton, Covent Garden, West London and soon Dulwich. I wonder if they and honest burger were fighting fort he same space (either here or in Peckham). Thanks Louisa for your investigative work. I've heard that rumour that they were taking over the Sea Cow a few times now. I'm not sure what a small group like MeatLiquor does will impact the analysis of a huge multinational chain in terms of size of units. Most of the businesses on Lordship lane already have at least two shops including Lordship Lane carpets (who have a store in Blackheath).
  23. I've heard that rumour
  24. Rye Common strikes me as far too small to hold a major festival like On Blackheath (which I attended as was good fun if perhaps a bit older and more middle class than the typical festival) and is likely to be much smaller if the rumor is even true. I love live music so I'd be happy to have an event here just because it would mean more live events in London. It would generate more trade for local business particularly the new stretch where Rosie's is so I'm sure it would be welcomed by local business. Also, getting home from a music festival is a nightmare-- the sheer numbers mean public transport is overwhelmed. It would be amazing to be able to walk back to ED in 10 minutes!
  25. Yes, agreed, I should have said ads should only be allowed showing it as an aid to quitting smoking. I 100% agree that's fine.
