I think anyone who finds it easy to live within their means lacks imagination. Most people do it out of pure fear of homelessness and financial ruin. I doubt most anyone finds it easy.
  2. Can you expand TE44. Did Thatcher promise something to Scottland and not follow through? That would be interesting the learn about-- I'm American so bear with me!
  3. God, so much: 1. Quality time with my friends and family 2. Music (this is a big one) 3. Sex 4. Food 5. Wine 6. Good books and poetry 7. Good TV 8. Bad TV (many guilty pleasures) 9. Lively debates on the EDF 10. Flipping through design magazines and blogs 11. Design work of all descriptions?setting up a room, giving new life to an old piece of furniture, etc 12. Buying something useful and beautiful that I need / have been looking for 13. Good weather 14. My pets
  4. That's just weird Otta as Westminster has already given then devolution historically. Why wouldn't they follow through with additional devolution promises? It sounds very emotional. People might say its about being able to self-rule but the reality is that it seems much more about identity than anything else, which is fine. I'm not sure the Scots really understand what gains they are actually getting by leaving, which would be a shame if people are voting to achieve something they basically already have.
  5. What I don't get about that though is that they have a lot of devolved powers already. If its not about national identity and more about self-determiniation what exactly do they feel they will be able to better control post split? I get the sentiment but when interviewed it doesn?t appear the average Scot (or English person mind you) understands who much self-rule the Scots have already obtained within the union.
  6. God, there really is no coming back from that. However, surely that's more an argument for voting Labour than succession. It shows how flimsy the concept of being British is in the hearts and minds of the population. My English partner never calls himself British. To him the term doesn't mean very much though he doesn't want to see the country splinter apart. Its weird because even though parts of the US are very different from one another culturally and otherwise, there is still a sense of being American even if you hate half the country. Its ineffable really but its strong

  9. Fair enough. There is a lot of that on the other thread so I have nothing original to add but I think additional swimming facilities in London more broadly will have health benefits. Recreational facilities for public use, particularly those that encourage physical activity should be developed assuming its feasible. While Lido's may have fallen out of favour at one point, they are becoming increasingly popular. Many (including me) are put off going to Brockwell Lido because of the long lines and so it appears locally there is plenty of demand to have two Lido options. Cinemas also closed down a few decades ago and due to changing public tastes have started to re-open all across London (including here)!
  10. There is a great garden centre in West Dulwich and a decent small one in North Dulwich. Do we really need another one in the local area when two are within walking distance? I'd love a great Chinese dim-sum place. Also, a place that offers Reformer Pilates classes (not just private tuition) A Mexican place A decent place to go out dancing Concert venue similar to Brixton Academy (though not near my house!)
  11. Dulwich Fox doesn't think something will work.... shocking!

  13. Sorry, was being thick. I think its really interesting. The links between Galicia in Spain and Ireland are facinating. Particularly how it all appears to link in with old folklore about the origins of the Irish as well. 14. Sorry, my point wasn't about how true or pure the concept of a celtic race is. My point was the people know as British Celts who spoke Common Brittonic migrated towards of the end of the 4th Century to modern day Brittany. Brittany thereafter was know as Little Britain / Lesser Brtain and overhere was know as Great Britain. My point is really about the etymology of the term Great Britain. I agree the concept of the Celtic people and the ethnic origins of the people of the Britain are very complex. 15. The term Great Brittain funny enough is a way to distinguish here from Little Britain (i.e. Britanny in France which is also historically populated by Celtic Britons who migrated there many centuries ago. The term has existed for more than 1,000 years. 16. Just make sure you actually put down 6 choices including a few realistic choices based on where you currently live. Southwark starting primary school booklet provides furthest distance information for the previous year to help guide you. Sometimes you nearest school might counter-intuitively not be your most realistic shot at getting in if its very oversubscribed.
  17. Ah, typically you need to live within 300m of Heber Primary to get in which really is only a few streets. Both schools are academically strong so just go and see which feels like the right fit for your little one. As others have said, none of the local schools are bad and Goodrich and Heber are two of the most popular.
  18. It's hooked up to my phone and I can immediately call the police. Much cheaper!
  19. This is all a bit blame the victim. We have an alarm (that texts us if its been triggered when we are out), we have had the police tag all our valuables and a sticker indicating as much in in front of our house, we have window locks and special security glass on our bifold doors in the garden, we don't have high hedges and have a sturdy front door and locks. I think most people take lots of precautions but to some extent getting broken into is a question of bad luck.
  20. Exactly rahahah-- despite the system, people choose how to behave and most sellers and buyers do behave well. My post Toldyouso did refer to estate agents. As my previous post discussed, I dealt with an agent who lied to me and the seller, and we both were outraged to learn what he had done. That sort of behavior can't be blamed on the buyer or seller, the agent was simply lacking any sense of morality.
  21. I've done a loft and side return (at the same time). The pure building costs for the extension will be circa 40k plus VAT and for the loft 45k plus VAT. So around 100k including VAT. However, to that you need to add all of the following: ? Measurement survey, engineering drawings, Thamses water fees, building control fees and Planning / certificate of lawfulness fees: 3k ? Architect fees: 12% of build costs if they project manage the build as well so 12k ? New Kitchen- 5k to 50k depending on what you want (12k for midrange with appliances) ? New flooring costs for extension and rest of kitchen: 750 to 2,500 depending on what you want ? Underfloor heating (if you want it): 2k ? Moving boiler / changing heating system to cope with larger house: 2k-4k ? New kitchen electrical fittings for kitchen: 1k to skies the limit depending on if you want LV lights, fancy chandeliers, how many sockets you want and what kind of finishing (chrome, flush, etc) ? Bifold doors and Velux windows (if you want them)?2k to 10k depending on what you want ? Flooring costs for new bedrooms and bathrooms and stairs: 2k to 6k depending on what you want ? New Bathroom suite- 1k to skies the limit ? Do you want to add in a ground floor bathroom under the stairs? Add 2k for that. ? Redoing your garden which will be wrecked?can be thousands! All in 150k assuming you do nothing else to the house would be fair budget if it?s a mid market finish. It can easily be much more if you have expensive tastes.
  22. You are being incredibly na?ve worldwiser. People with ?proper windows? including security locks and alarms have been burgled very recently in the area.
  23. Whether you have a boy or a girl is down to the man's sperm. Trying to figure out how an OS would impact that. I like the theory in general though!
