House prices start to fall
LondonMix replied to eastdulwichproperty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes and no. Those willing to exploit the weakness of the system will do best and the industry will be full of scoundrels. However, not everyone automatically behaves badly (just the most successful within the industry). The fact that the legal structure gives scoundrels and advantage doesn?t negate the fact that these people as individuals are scoundrels! -
Isn't a Mexican place supposed to be opening up in Speedo's old spot? Not sure we need two. With Tsunmai opening we'll soon have Japanese on LL as well. What's still missing? Good dim sum place? Spanish tapas?

That's bigger than I thought it would be. It's impressive how much seating they are getting into the complex. From the outside I wouldn't have thought it was possible. Does anyone know much more about the food offering? I believe they were thinking of some kind of hot food bistro thing but haven't heard anymore details.

Your complaint doesn?t appear to have anything to do with ALS Association but rather with a UK government policy which forces able bodied benefits seekers to do charity work if they can?t find paid employment and the maladministration of the stated policy. Why you are making this about pay for permanent members of staff of an American charity (that isn?t subject to this UK policy) is impossible to understand. You are being absurd.

My father-in-law grew up in what he considered a large 4 bed Victorian house in North London in the 50s and 60s. Out of curiosity, we looked it up on Rightmove, under sold houses and its now configured as a two bed. When his family lived there, the 2nd downstairs reception room was his parents' room. The dining room was in the narrow k!tchen and the only bathroom was downstairs behind the k!tchen. There was a loo (no sink) upstairs along with 3 bedrooms. His 3 sisters shared the biggest room by choice and he had his own room which meant there was a spare bedroom. The current owners knocked through the two reception rooms into a through lounge. The k!tchen was extended into the old bathroom. They moved the bathroom upstairs and lost the back bedroom as a result, so now it?s a 2 bed house. He couldn?t believe it!

Cafe G... When is it opening?
LondonMix replied to gillettsarah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Who are you complaining to / about? No one who lives nearby has suggested the customers are creating any excess parking stress. This is beyond a non-issue. As you suggest most people probably do arrive on foot with perhaps a few coming by car due to personal circumstance. -

They are simply stating a fact. -
Agree regarding staff but people definitely used to have more kids and live more densely even a generation ago.

Have Forest Hill boys results not come out yet and Harris East Dulwich Girls? -
Yes, that's true. Also, you can always paint it if its not something very rare or special to make it feel more up to date. Personally, I love rosewood and have a number mid-century rosewood items. The trick is not to have too much dark furniture in any single room as in a small Victorian terrace it can very quickly start to feel heavy.
-
Agree-- there is a lot of great furniture that has stood the test of time made of beautiful hardwood that you can pick up for the same price as items made of softwoods in a similar style in high street retailers. Buy what you like of course- I am not a huge fan of most Victorian furniture so wouldn't take most things if they were free but I do love Georgian (specifically Regency peices).

Haha- agree about the phones. I still use a blackberry and people look at me with mouths agape Also, vintage has been popular for way longer than 2008. 15 years ago when I was at uni Urban Outfitters were already doing faux vintage t-shirts and pastiche vintage furniture so it was already a mass market look in NY back then.

That's depressing but at least I can take refuge in the fact that I'm American and they seem to know. Still appear those who do know that its for charity are donating which is still a large number of participants (clutching at straws to defend Brits)...
-
Yeah, it was a clever way to bring attention to his own charity while also supporting ALS.
-
That's true-- before it was do it OR donate. I think its good that the people participating in the challenge organically changed it to do it AND donate, which kind of undermines the entire argument that those doing it are not charitable... People actually changed the rules so that the challenge would raise more money and still people are complaining about them...
-
This thread is surreal. First, the entire challenge was attacked because some posters' facebook friends are vain (why do you have vain friends?). Then, the entire challenge was attacked because the people donating don't really care about ALS. The evidence for this is that they didn't donate before to this specific charity and therefore are selfish bastards (rediculous) Now, people are actually attacking the charity itself! How about, its a very successful fundraising scheme that has raised awareness and an incredible amount of money in a very short time. A large part of its success is that it allows people to have a bit of fun by making themselves look a bit silly while doing a bit of good for a charity. That combined with the social / participatory nature of challenging those you know to get involved has allowed it to rapidly spread contributing to its success. Just lighten up. People having fun while raising money for a charity is really not worthy of this type of vitriol. Nothing about this is unusual-- people dare each other all the time, people sponsor charities when people complete challenges all the time, people share what they are doing with their friends on facebook all the time.

That's not much id an increase in more than 100 years!

People are vain- though the people I know that come across the vaintest on social media are actually insecure. Social media itself is just an outlet

Those are crazy syllogisms. People in general are very charitable in my experience. I give to several large and small charities, run for two different charities each year and also donate items and I think that is pretty standard. I know much more charitable people. However, that doesn't mean I have to hate the Ice Bucket challenge. I don't give yo the charities I support so that I can feel superior to others...
-
It's not vanity. People just like having fun and being part of something. Why tapping into that for a good cause is causing such irritation shows what a miserable lot you are!! People always raise money through taking on a challenge- look at how much the marathon raises. The main difference is this allows for participation through nomination. I haven't done it but I think it's great.

The restaurant chain pre-dates the Japanese Tsunami of 2011. It's kind of unreasonable to expect a business that has been trading for 9 years to change its name.

House prices start to fall
LondonMix replied to eastdulwichproperty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The US it is more expensive. You asked why people moan, and I explained its because they are dishonest as real estate agents in other countries who are more honest are not hated in the same way. I'm glad you prefer the system we've got but I hope you understand now why agents here are hated... -

People moan about estate agents in this country because they are dishonest. Had a horrific experience with Winkworth who lied both to the vendor and us. Realtors in the US aren't vilified but they are also licensed
