  1. We all know that Dulwich would give their eye teeth for a Waitrose or a M&S but would the local independant food shops want it? Plus its just rumours that keep appearing I quote. The old Police station was rumoured too.
  2. If only all speed limits could be obeyed particularly in residential and built up areas. This is what I tell all my pupils.Remember, driving is a team game where everybody is responsible for each other's safety on the road. I would like to see a retest every 10years for all road users. As I said previously. We have one of the world's best road safety records. Nicholas Driving Academy SE22

Of course I can't be 100% accurate but I have a pretty good idea of speed. To be totally accurate we would need the police to have regular speed checks and I think you will find that 60mph is not exaggerated.I think some of the road markings around the area ara appalling particullary Underhill Rd onto Barry Rd urgently needs a stop line and sign. Anyway I have been teaching most of the day,im pleased to say that Barry Rd and drivers in general have been well behaved and patient to me and my pupils. Don't you think it's much calmer and safer without the school runs?
  4. If the council could stop all vehicles parking close to all junctions that would be a start,at least you would have much better vision, consequently much safer. In regards to the speeding motorists although im not a great lover of speed humps or speed cameras but if they save lives im all for it. Moneys tight it aint gonna happen!
  5. I would not trust the mirror, plus those type of things are usually used on country lanes blind bends etc. The only safe way to emerge into Barry Rd and others like it is what I teach my pupils, look right left and right again and edge out if necessary.Other thing is to stop vehicles parking close to all junctions that would help the observation issues. The real problem is bad driving and drivers flouting the law on a daily basis. I don't wish to be unpopular, Maybe a retest for all every ten years. That's another subject.
  6. DJKQ I can't physically prove it and obviously I don't have speed gun in my brain ha ha, but take it from a very experienced professional driving Instructor (ADI) In my oppinion I would say that some drivers have exceeded 60mph along Barry Rd, I'm surprised you find it hard believe? So many cars these days can reach 60mph in less than 10seconds,it feels like your doing 40mph.You could always purchase a speed gun, stand there for a couple of days im sure someone would do at least 60mph. Remember motorbikes bomb down there too. The road is long and straight, and at times not much traffic,so there's a recipe for a possible disaster. At times there are usually lots of buses which should slow a lot of the traffic down. But the 12 is so long in length and travels quite slowly with frequent stops that why so many bad drivers with little patience try to overtake them with no regard for oncoming traffic and junctions etc so consequently so damm dangerous and thats a major problem.Barry Rd is probably no more dangerous than other roads of its kind. (IT'S JUST BAD DRIVING IS THE REAL PROBLEM)
  7. Take it from me 60mph plus is no exaggeration, especially late at night. I know in these times of government cuts there's no chance of speed cameras. Barry Rd is dead straight and almost a mile long, perfect for the boy racers, and motorists who flout the law on a daily basis.Speed cameras would stop morons who use roads like this as race tracks. (SPEED KILLS)
  8. One very important thing is missing when approaching from Underhill Rd,and that is a painted line and stop sign. I can't believe the council has left it so long, it's a very dangerous junction. I agree, Barry Rd is treated like a race track at times, definately two speed cameras need to be errected urgently. Im a local driving instructor, and that road scares me. But most dangerous is just trying to emerge from the side roads onto Barry rd. Not only the volume and a speed of traffic as somebody rightly said, you get large vans, cars etc. that park close to the junction and the only way to get out is to edge your vehicle forward just to get a clear view. When you get lunetics coming at you at 60mph plus, you've got no chance. Pedestrians and cyclists are at serious risk.
  9. Don't you mean snakes on a plane, don't think iv'e heard of snakes in a gym! Bizarre
  10. Although I didn't witness the incident (i'm only going on what i've read), "Dregs of society" is a little harsh. But as Isaid previously, if they've got a sharp object, which could be a knife. I don't mean to sound dated but we often carved our names, logos and girls we liked into the wood. In this world of knife culture, I suppose it's hard to believe that they were just young kids harmlessly carving their names into the wood. On a positive note, I'm glad to have the apparatus opening very soon.
  11. Come on guys, stop making steve feel like an outcast. Vandalism is a real problem for all of us.If there chipping away at the wood with a sharp object that's serious.Even worse they could demage the climbing ropes which could cause a nasty injury to our little ones. Steve and Chuck are right. Playground should have been finished months ago, what are they playing at!
  12. I agree, he's about a metre from the kerb, on a double yellow line, on a bend. And did anyone else notice the huge dent in the left front bumper. Maybe someone didn't like getting a ticket and took it out on the car? Or maybe this is why he parks so far away from the kerb, because he keeps hitting things? Nicholas Driving Academy SE22
  13. Dulwich Village, close to the roundabout at College Road and Gallery Road. For petes sake, when are those roadworks going to be finished? The temporary lights there are not only confusing but are also a real nuisance. The past few days I haven't even seen any sign of work happening- no workmen, no equipment, nothing. Just tailback of traffic and frustrated motorists, including myself. From what I can see, they are putting a road calming humps on approach to the roundabout but why it's taking over 2 weeks to complete is beyond me. And of course with both the school runs and rush hour traffic, it's a shambles. Nicholas Nicholas Driving Academy, SE22
  14. Hi all users of the Dulwich forum Merry Christmas to all of my customers, friends and the good people of Dulwich. Here's to a great 2010 and I hope the administrator and runners of this website keep up the great work. Thank you very much. Nicholas Pauli Nicholas Driving Academy, SE22
  15. Argos, McDonalds, and most importantly a decent restaurant for special ocassions.
  16. Whistable and Broadstairs are my favourites. In a car head towards A2/M2 its quite well signed. Whistable about 75min from ED, traffic permiting, nice fish restaurant there. Broadstairs about 20min further, nice beach and fab ice cream parlur on the front. On the way back you can stop off at Bluwater for a little shopping. Do you have a Sat Nav? Good luck.
  17. Interesting comments. Approaching from the traffic lights and turning right into Carlton Ave I have witnessed many drivers who seem to think they don't have to give way to oncoming trafic, because the road is so wide they think it's a continuetion of the road they are in. Regarding the tyre tracks over the pavement area is a concern, there's no kerb protection for pedestrians (bearing in mind it's opossite to two schools). On the plus side the layout should stop parking on the corners, which would help observation. Time will tell if it's an improvement. I am all for improving road safety, but I'm not so sure that this layout will help.
  18. All the best to you. Well said Administrator.
  19. Has anyone noticed the ridiculous new layout opposite Alleyn's school? Not only were we all inconvenienced by the road being closed for several weeks but the layout is really dangerous, they've raised the road slightly but alas there's no protection for the pavement. As a driving instructor, I use that road alot, alot of drivers just drive over the curb unaware that it is not part of the road. It's dangerous from all angles and in my opinion a complete waste of money as it serves no purpose and there's very little protection for pedestrians and of course, the school children. 20. Hi, you sound like a sensible hard working mum of three. And you give your kids the right advice. I agree they would be lorry fodder. I don't see anything wrong with responsible kids riding on the pavements, lets face it some roads and drivers are leathal.
  21. trinity Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Agreed - truely dreadful incident and extremely > rare I agree there are loads of drivers on mobiles flouting the law daily with no regards for anyone. On the subject of irresponsible bad cyclist, I think a theory type test mainly covering the Highway code would be a good idea. Im not a cyclist myself, but as a driver I have respect for all law abiding road users, pavements included. Being injured by a cyclist is still pretty rare,as far as im aware?
  22. As I said in an earlier post, I don't have a problem with kids riding on the pavements, as long as they show respect for pedestrians and dismount when necessary. How many times do you see a cyclist flouting the law,not stopping at red traffic lights, riding down oneway streets the wrong way the list goes on don't get me wrong there are some law abiding cyclists out there, unfortunatley I don't see that many. Maybe we need some compulsory training and test, just a thought.
  23. I dont have a problem if its children riding on the pavements, some of our roads and drivers are leathal. Nevertheless pavements are for pedestrians, so cyclists should dismount were necessary, and respect that.
  24. I think some of you are being a bit harsh about bendys. Im not a great fan mainly because of our very narrow streets, and some twats who park on or near corners. Have a thought for the disabled and the elderly there a much safer option. Cant wait for the new Aston Martin design double deckers.
  25. No that was Gordons Garage (Ford) The one im talking about was just up the road were the new Tescos Express is. Take it from me it was every schoolboys dream Etypes Lambos etc 73/74 I was a teenager with to much testosterone,I lived for girls and fast cars.
