  1. I have seen the Orient Express at Victoria station with a steam locomotive in tandem with a more modern diesel.
  2. A niece of mine spent a day training with NPower when she was first looking for a job, but walked away at the end of the day because she found the NPower method was to be deliberately intimidating towards any likely looking vulnerable people.
  3. Yes, we had a guy do a similar thing and hammered on our front door despite that there's a doorbell. It was late at night and dark and he flashed some ID at me so I sort of told him to go away and certainly didn't let him in. If they're so insistent on getting actual meter readings from folk who still have indoor meters then why don't they offer to relocate those meters to the exterior of the house like they do in new builds? Then they could read them whenever they liked.
  4. Why does the service need to modernise? All that's necessary is for the postman to ring the doorbell. I collected my package from the depot yesterday and there were maybe three people there to collect, which didn't seem too stressful to me.
  5. Exactly. All three are a hazard to others who just want to stroll. I've been bitten by dogs and tripped by their extending leads, almost run down by cyclists, and run into by joggers. I've given up walking the parks for health reasons!
  6. Could we have an area of any local park that is free from dogs, cyclists and joggers, or am I asking too much?
  7. Although my culprit had a van so the 4mph directive wouldn't apply. Perhaps Royal Mail should be held accountable for the environmental pollution damage resulting from all the deliberately wasted journeys.
  8. Oh dear, that's disgraceful, I feel almost pity for the workers now. I like walking, and my average of just over 4mph is faster than most people move before they break into a jog.
  9. No, a fridge would go through our letterbox ok, but this was an exercise cycle which was the wrong shape.
  10. When I lived in Paddington there was a problem with casual workers who were unable to read English. Perhaps RM isn't allowed to discriminate against such applicants despite the fact that it would seem like a necessary requirement for the job.
  11. There was one occasion when East Dulwich sorting office refused to deliver a large item to my door and insisted on me collecting it because they said it was too big. I had no way of collecting it so the package was returned to the sender who then used another courier to deliver it!
  12. I can believe that, but Royal Mail should change the wording on its cards from Sorry you were out to Sorry if you're in

I tried phoning to find out what they're playing at but one number is just the automated redelivery option and the sorting office wouldn't answer its number. And like you say they know that the average consumer won't expend too much energy flogging a knackered horse.
  14. I heard the letterbox clatter this morning and saw a card drop through with the 'Sorry, you were out' legend and all the details. By the time I'd got to the door the guy was crossing the road to his van and I couldn't catch his attention. He wasn't carrying anything and hadn't rung my doorbell. So what's this about? No attempt was made to deliver and the guy was in a hurry to get away!
  15. When I arrived in East Dulwich in 1975 nobody had heard of area, especially not Black Cabbies north of the River. Some outsiders had heard of the Village, but SE22 residents were simply poor relations of their posher SE21 neighbours.

No doubt Wren would have used more glass, plastic and other modern materials if they had been available to him.
  17. Concrete is an essential part of modern construction but it's mostly hidden behind more pleasing brick facing material.
  18. I?m pretty sure the Egyptians built the pyramids. Brendan I sure you're correct on that one >:D<
  19. Jeremy, the Romans used concrete in the Colosseum and the ancient Greeks used a primitive form of concrete in the pyramids.
  20. Most of the posts seem more concerned with ensuring that the owners or developers are prevented from making a profit than with any real desire to preserve this old ruin for any redeeming features it may have. Concrete isn't an aesthetically pleasing material, which was first realised by the Romans when they built the Colosseum and went to great lengths to disguise the concrete structural elements.
  21. What will it be offering that other bakeries aren't?
  22. After asking her to repeat everything she'd blurted out as I opened the front door - because I hadn't understood a word she'd said in her strong east European accent - I just asked the woman who she was representing and when she told me it was NPower I just said I wasn't interested. She went away.
  23. Depends on the cyclists and how they behave. The posh young West Dulwich mums and their kids tend to ring their bells when approaching and then say 'thank you' as they pass.
  24. I think the problem with London City airport is its short runway which means it can't handle the larger and more economical payload aircraft. I always use Gatwick and Heathrow but rarely Stansted.
  25. I saw five green Santas riding a stretched cycle last Christmas in Dulwich Park.
