Personally I've been waiting for the morality vs legality question to be brought to a head and now quite enjoying the ensuing debate. As per Quids previous postings most don't get evasion versus tax planning (legitimate avoidance)....lots of sensible personal finance areas where you can legitimately choose how much tax to pay across certain range...splitting CGT allowance as a married couple, IHT planning etc. Tbh I don't know anyone who voluntarily pays the maximum amount of tax at all times if (i) they don't have to and (ii) as some kind of personal statement for the greater societal moral cause. Then there is small time cash declared fraud that millions indulge in daily from cabbies to shop owners... Ever done cash deals with a builder or handyman? Fiddled a work expense or taxi receipt? No real moral difference in my book. Interesting that George and Dave, whose absolute net worth is considerably higher than their salaries reflect, have clearly agreed that ?200k ish is the publicly acceptable limit whilst in the corridors of power... FTSE 250 execs, bankers, Hedge Fund guys all earning 7 fig packages and doing much worse. The whole thing is a misfiring mess that's forcing us to address a base moral issue. Looking fwd to see where it will end....

Property prices cooling in ED?
DovertheRoad replied to cantthinkofaname's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Lol.(and yawn) Brief summary is that it's all screwed. Buy to let is now effectively finished as an attractive proposition for amateurs and flats not shifting and falling. Massive bubble for London prices.Bigger global economy due another massive correction, no real safe haven unless you like gold and that's up 20%. Did you hear we had our place valued at ?1.5M? I know...mad isn't it. And are you all ready for negative interest rates? Pass me the quince jelly Andrew... -
I was just talking purely about the sourdough....

Seabag Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I prefer Gail's > > Discuss Well you know your sourdough Seabag. And Gails bread isn't all that good IMO. For the sd lover, Brickhouse, Jade and the place on NCR market all better...other attributes aside.

Today's news...cenotaph...surely a Mash article anytime soon.... "Top Gear replaces twat presenter with another professional twat". etc etc. Yet millions watch it. What's wrong with acceptable alternatives, like River Monsters for example?

Ever tried Cullen Skink Stevo? Food of the gods...especially on a cold day.

Is Wilko's like a Budgens or is it more like CostCo? I've always wanted to try that big CostCo near Croydon and that big Wing Yip...

Ok so my first job in London ('97) was handing job vacancy leaflets to public outside West Croydon station. I was stopped by a Rastafarian guy who asked me "Do they give jobs to ?" which deeply troubled me as a new arrival at the time. A few thoughts: - Seabag has solid working class roots himself and has his usual tongue in cheek so *almost* gets away with it. Sydenham though...hardly a distinct beacon of cool diversity itself is it? - Croydon is not pretty but it works. It's strangely functional in ways that other parts of London are not. - It's all relative. Old time Londoners in Fulham and Hammersmith think East Dulwich is a shit hole. - If you've grown up in a rural celtic village with quiet roads, clean air, low crime, jobs nearby and good public services then London will always be shithole. It's just a culturally rich shit hole full of boundless opportunity. - Agree that the marginal but distinct demographic differences between specific suburbs in London are FASCINATING and have yet to be fully documented by modern day anthropologists. - Agree Bromley is all fur coat with it's Waitrose and Chardonnay leanings - see Louisa. / message ends.

Thanks but this is the issue...lots of stuff online saying it's ?3k max or there are implications...without saying what these are...then others saying its effectively a capital gain so its up to the CGT limit of ?11k ish or CGT applies..then as per Mick some saying none at all. The sum in question is a fair bit higher than that I'll check with a bean counter....thanks though.

How much cash can you gift to a friend without incurring a tax penalty on either side?

FYI Cherry Tree is suit friendly after 7.30pm

Please note. In the last few weeks I've been into the Cherry Tree in my suit after 7.30pm and it has been most welcoming. One evening I even went in with a briefcase (brass hinges) yet still had a great chat with a builder and an off duty fireman. Not only was the service super friendly but the food, booze selection and general diversity was spot on. Suits fill your boots.

I've been a few times now at different times of day and week. As a dad I've been one lunchtime (two babies) and for a quiet pint (no kids...agree eves = adult time) and its been all really good. Friendly, helpful staff, decent food, well priced menu and a great fit out that makes it much warmer than the previous incarnation. For what they had to work with and given the previous rep they've done a fantastic job with it. The two sections work well...last night there was football in one area and we ate on the kitchen side. Different needs catered for with that layout. Thanks for the hospitality guys.

Everyone has a Bowie era they relate to strongest...Imine was actually that pop 80's stuff which was big with me as a kid. Let's Dance is a classic album. Loved that video shot in outback Australia. And Stevie Ray Vaughan playing on it before he became famous with Texas flood. Those songs still stand up as classics...and get regular airplay.

Famous People in Sainsburys
DovertheRoad replied to Ladygooner's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The answer is Noel the builder, Micky Flanagans sidekick from Detour de France on Sky 1. I can't believe you didn't get that. -

Warning - traffic heading towards Elephant from Camberwell / Dulwich was extremely congested this morning because of the work KalamityKel mentions above...and that was at 7am. Hopefully these problems will only temporary whilst work to remove the northern roundabout continues. These are major structural changes to this route in for all road users. Further information and a really helpful .pdf map can be found here: https://tfl.gov.uk/travel-information/improvements-and-projects/elephant-and-castle
