Hi everyone, I live on the Dulwich estate and received the following letter yesterday: NOTICE FROM THE FEUDAL LORDS OF DULWICH PARISH TO LEASEHOLDERS AND PEASANTS OF SURROUNDING SHIRE: His esteemed Lordship Chief Trustee of the Dulwichshire Estates hereby proclaims that the threat of subversive merriment in central village has been quashed. Having repelled the onset of progressive, creative modernisation and associated pestilence, the trustees of the estate are pleased to announce the reopening of the Greyhound hostelry to villagers and share croppers. The new controlled space has been wiped of its heritage charm and replaced with a pleasing New England yacht club theme. Taking our inspiration from the much lauded refurbishment of the Clockhouse the new public house resembles a modern day Bernie Inn that we trust should keep civility in check. Villagers may use said facilities for modest enjoyment from Nov 7th. The speedy bar service and reheated M&B food were a firm favourite and shall remain. /message ends

I've just realised. I'm already a customer - seems I have plenty old pairs of St Michael pants in the wardrobe. Do they sell pants as well as prawn sandwiches and overly seasoned ready meals?
-
I can't wait to try this store out. I have never been to M&S before.
-
I believe you're not impartial to a drinkable Savignon Blanc?
-
Ideally I would like them to turn it into a yacht club theme like the Clockhouse and offer more wine /cocktails. Something that attracts estate agents when they knock off on Friday would be good too.

Moving to Talfourd Road from East Dulwich - is it safe?
DovertheRoad replied to Lisa T's topic in The Lounge
Artful got it. Anyways to provide a more constructive answer for the OP. I have been round that area a lot and would say it is no less safe than most residential established streets in South London. The only times I've felt unsafe down here are when I've strayed onto one of the larger estates in Peckham and once one up in Vauxhall which felt like a world of their own. And I've walked through SE15 many times with no props but the only times I've been robbed on the street (once + one attempted) or burgled (twice since 2004) have been in East Dulwich. Usual precautions aside I think you'll be fine. -
Moving to Talfourd Road from East Dulwich - is it safe?

I see this street as no more dangerous than other rough streets like Fellbrigg Road and Friern in East Dulwich. Once when I was on Fellbrigg I saw two people eating fried chicken on someone else's front garden wall. This is something you don't get "betwixt the villages" where we have a neighbourhood watch system of retired headmasters and cello teachers "keeping it safe". -
Pass the cheese will you Charlotte?

New curry house - east dulwich road

Foxy- I may have misread your post but did you say you personally chose the seating material and colour at the new Jaflong? -
Might be an odd choice but Rocca in the village does breakfast although it doesn't advertise it openly. It's about ?8 for a BIG full English but best of all is the bacon. It's Old spot or something? Thick like gammon and lightly charred and very good indeed.

???? - agree economy was improving but far from boom time. Certainly Financial Services and here in the City generally it has and still does feel like recession. FS is not doing well at all. Banks have shrunk or relocating departments overseas (Credit Suisse, Deutsche). It will reform and strengthen again here post Brexit...but not for a while yet IMO. Would be good to see some good news for manufacturing / retail. We were arguably too FS weighted as an economy.

All of the above...and remember to divide your saving between banks if it is over ?75,000. As that is the max amount protected by UK government. As we now know, banks can go bust (and still might).
-
???? - what's your theory as to why that is? Just curious.
-
And my suggestion whilst not as liquid as cash is not far off (30 days notice to withdraw usually)
-
Yes I understand that. If they want a safe place to chuck in a few hundred quid a month they save them a savings account is the only option. But don't expect them to grow on deposit...they'll shrink in real terms and it's important the OP is aware of that. I was assuming they'd want a modicum of growth....which involves taking some risk.
-
Sadly I've done just that rendel. I just checked them for the first time in 20 years. Still perhaps ?1m is due my way next month. At least it's a fun form of saving. Back to the OP and I genuinely think keeping cash in a regular savings acct is a bad idea unless you are massively risk averse. You'll need to make 3% annually just to beat inflation and keep level. We have a real risk of negative interest rates (your bank charges you to hold yor savings) and house prices are still likely to rise by say 3% pa with continued cheap mortgages. Equally there are no easy, fast gains in equities unless you have some kind of edge over the markets or are basically gambling. So what to do? If you can loosen your risk profile slightly I would utilise ISAs to the full and perhaps get an online stocks and shares isa with someone like Hargreaves Landsdowne. Then spread your savings across a mix of low cost tracker funds, perhaps some guilts and keep some in cash (plenty cash only ISAs available). And I would take a long term view of min 5 years. Historically this strategy will beat savings accounts per that timeframe by some margin.

I've had ?1000 of premium bonds since birth in 1975...quite a lot of money back then....but not won any return on that in 41 years. However if id invested that in a bog standard low fee FTSE tracker....

To be fair. Whilst all of this is true, Lordships OP above also holds true. It might look alright on the surface (bounce!) but an ill wind blows beneath. QE is having increasingly little affect and Carney has run out of options.

Back on topic please Mr Medic....where do you like your sausages?

Is there potential to gentrify chinese food?
-
Where is currently the best old skool cafe* locally? Or are they like curry houses and all much the same if we're honest? Before it became a vegetarian joint I really liked the Blue Brick. Big hand cut diamond shaped British chips...skin off....decent sausages and a hand made feel yet traditional. Recent experiences and opinions please. *Gentrified offerings like Franklins middle class breakfast excluded. It has to be a place you'd find proper builders, fluoro vests etc

New curry house - east dulwich road
DovertheRoad replied to Louisa's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This thread is great. Thanks all. Keep it rolling.... -
It's tough out there people. Keep it "safe". In fact when the world is going to shit, being able to extract and appreciate moments of joy is arguably more important than ever.
