Sweaty Betty - the final nail in the gentrification coffin?

LM I'm thinking of shops that would be widely accessible to the larger community. For me, Space NK would be a great place to get gifts for special occasions such as Christmas and Birthday's. Pret a manger would be a great option for sandwiches to take out st lunchtime etc - these are both great examples of shops which cross the social boundaries. IMO Many of the chain boutiques do not do that. Louisa. -

Blah Blah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Aren't rising unit rents somewhat to blame as well > for overpiced 'boutiques'? Rising unit rents are only happening because of the chanting demographic and the disposable income available to them. When a family who grew up in ED with parents and grandparents born their, and are unable to afford a 4 bed house for themselves and kids, something is surely wrong. When a small indepedent convenience shop is also unable to do the same thing, the result is wealthy newcomers from the burbs and beyond renting and buying the commercial and resedential stock and changing the neighborhood. Precisely foxy. What is this modern day obsession with online or otherwise petitions? Can one not hold a particular view and express it without being told they are a troll who doesn't have a petition. On the side note of useable chains, it would be nice to have facilities we can all use as a community. I wouldn't have had a problem with pret a manger or space nk coming into this space for example. I am assuming you didn't notice my spring campaign to prevent daffodils being killed in our local parks? I've had numerous verbal confrontation with bullying pavement hoggers and communal plant killers. Louisa. -

LM the problem is small independents are being replaced by small chains. It's the classic outcome of this process. This unit started off as a second hand shop, then 'pioneer' gentrifiers came in and opened a delicatessen which was very popular in the early years then started to drop off the radar as the process picked up and wealthier folk moved in. And now we are at the stage where the chain boutique takes over. Yes we have plenty of indepedents still, but for how much longer? Do we really want to end up like Notting Hill in 20 years time? Nowhere to buy a loaf of bread because every commercial unit is a boutique! Louisa. -

Do you honestly believe I would have contributed to the forum for all these years if I were only here to cause a stink about gentrification? You base your current assumptions of me on a handful of posts (barely 20% I would guesstimate) over the entire 9 year period. This troll thing is getting boring. Louisa. -

Maybe they aren't, but just up the road in SE21 I'm sure many bankers have homes, seeing as their are numerous private schools nearby, and guess where they'll go shopping quids? Somewhere on their doorstep perhaps? So not only are these new chain shops aimed at out of town folk (in effect), they're also depriving the SE22 community of a useable high street in a residential neighborhood! I am nice to people if they are nice to me, from experience I've dealt with more anger and confrontation directed at me through pavement rage and day to day ignorance (eg not thanking me for holding a door open in shops etc) from people of this social class than any other. Just my personal observation. Louisa. -

Up-market small chain boutiques are unquestionably now replacing the indepedent gentrifying businesses of the early to mid 00's, in ED. the 'Northcote' effect has materialised, as predicted (and despite of limited space within retail units) by myself and others way back in 2007. As soon as M&S made a move on the lane, other chains (albeit smaller) have/are/will continue to follow suit. I feel for people like myself, but without cars, who are now no longer able to afford to pop to the local shops to get the bare basics. This is a residential area first and foremost and we need useable shops for the whole community where you can grab a pint of milk and a newspaper. Louisa. -

Indeed uncleglen. Posh bankers wives with bugger all else to do than shop for goods they'll probably never use. Must feel good walking into 'saw you coming etc' and sneering at people like me ordering a doner & chips next door. Grrr. Louisa. -
Just been horrified by reading about this new shop coming to part of the former ED deli unit on LL. A visit to their website shows the kinds of goods they sell, and from this I can only imagine the sort of pram pushing, take away coffee holding, sunglasses wearing yummies this sort of unit will attract. I always knew that deli was a springboard for later post-gentrification chains to move in and take over, and it's come to pass. I am feeling helpless currently. All these years of campaigning for a a fairer mixed ED has come to nothing. I'm tempted to invest in some placards and take to the streets, or contact lidl and get them to stick a metro store next door once Brissi move on! The final nail is indeed in the ED coffin. Louisa.

A 'leap in the dark' would mean we would have a completely different and refreshed perspective on survival as a sovereign state. Louisa.

Public services at breaking point, cuts all over the shop, and Cameron justifies ?9mil of public funds on a propaganda campaign to encourage the status quo with Europe. Disgraceful. Louisa.

How can you possibly say Europe doesn't make us less democratic? This union bankrupted Greece and made unsavoury demands of their government to repay a debt which they're never likely to be able to pay. I'd call that a pretty undemocratic demand of a sovreign state, wouldn't you? And you suggest the 'outs' are being romantic? Funniest comment I've read on this topic. Ps I am not a lover of empire not am I an "egotistical control freak", more I am a lover of freedom of destiny and democracy, two things the EU wouldn't know not understand if they bit it one on the backside! Louisa.

I would advise investing in a decent chippy to come over and make you a new frame. It could also be that the floor underneath has shifted which will of course cause the frame and consequently door to not sit correctly. Louisa.

Loz and to counteract those arguments you just stated 1) how did this nation survive for the previous 1000 years before the EU existed and; 2) surely remaining in the EU is also a complete leap in the dark what with the refugee crisis, the Greek debt situation to name but a few things Louisa.

Hot cross buns. Louisa.

I'm voting out, for reasons I previously stated. We cannot achieve anything close to democracy if we remain. I would also quite like to see a republic and a totally elected second chamber of parliament but we can't have everything in this world can we? Louisa.

You are about to be horrified. Foxtons coming to Rye Lane

Hi Eileen, that link was working fine yesterday. Unfortunantely it isn't an April Fool's, here is the link and the case number: http://planbuild.southwark.gov.uk/documents/?casereference=16/AP/1113&system=DC Reference: 16/AP/1113 Louisa. -
Without sounding like a nosey bugger, may I ask who this well known stalker/poster was? Lots of people on here claim to have never seen me or know of me, and yet I tell people all the time who I am in local shops, restaurants, bank, petrol station. I'm sure if you don't know me personally, you'll almost certainly have seen me walking around the vicinity, as I do most days (and drive). Louisa.

If Foxtons are applying to take on this unit, other chains and estate agents will surely follow suit. Louisa. -
Brendan welcome back. You've missed out on bottles of orange liquid, antisocial food consumption on public transport, the 'will they' or 'won't they' Iceland/M&S debacle, overpriced local eateries/grocers, personal and general attacks/disagreements aplenty. The list goes on. Enjoy catching up! Louisa.

Well after all that it seems the application was 'withdrawn', presumably before it went to committee level? Anyway, this hasn't deterred Foxtons from putting in a different application the other end of Rye Lane! http://planbuild.southwark.gov.uk/documents/?GetDocument=%7b%7b%7b!%2f6Pbyt4NcfDVYUcsjHhmpg%3d%3d!%7d%7d%7d I think Foxtons will get their way, one way or another. Louisa. -
Not always. My ramblings are mostly genuine irks which continually bug me because the populace of ED seem incapable of adapting to the existing neighborhood and instead reinventing the entire area to suit their own ego-wealth driven ends. Not that I'm bitter, not that I'm currently sober either. Louisa.
-
Seabag if that is a genuine offer, I am flattered. I do get so excited about certain things. Need to calm down and live a little. As foxy knows only too well, if I posted here what I'd like to say I would probably get a little carried away and say some regrettable alcohol induced ramblings, about the woes of wealthy parents with prams in the public arena and/or a further and (possibly) more heated debate about the disgusting social habits of certain 'people' who fail to accept the social responsibilities that come with sharing space on transport. And I could go on. It's making me angry just typing this! Louisa.

There's a whole thread in the main section about food on public transport alongside a bloody buggy blocking a cafe door! I'm livid just browsing the comments. I can't cope. Stop eating on buses or trains! It's rude, unhealthy and antisocial. Stop blocking cafes/public spaces with prams! I'm so angry! Louisa.
