Lordship lane Co-op wants to open 23/7
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sainsbury's aren't open 24hours any more. The 'we' is East Dulwich ward councillors. We think the area already has sufficient 24/7 corner stores. But a proper supermarket being open 24/7 could lead to it being a destination and parking issues. We think the residents around Lordship Lane deserve a break at least during the nights. -
EDITED to correct errors - those errors were based on emails sent directly to me but since amended. Sorry. The Coop has applied to extend its current alcohol license and to opening close to 24/7. Selling allcohol for off premise sales 06:00-23:00 and "Late night refreshment - indoors" 23:00-05:00. This is possible under the Licencesing Act 2003. This seems like a bad idea. It's one thing having a small corner shop open 24/7 which is likely ot just serve locals and the odd passing trade. We fear the Coop being open 6am to 5am every day will become a night time destination and have formally objected. But what do you think? If you think it's a good or bad idea please do tell council officials before the 27 March deadline. Email [email protected] and copy me [email protected] We don't want such a potentially big decision affecting East Dulwich Night Time Economy to be taken without as much local input as possible.

New East Dulwich Primary School 161/80 + 102
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Wednesday 6 March The Harris Dulwich primary school team will be interviewed by the Dept of Education team about a new Dulwich primary school. We then hear early May whether we've been successful. We've sufficient support for one school but seek more support to have two new primary schools locally. So any support between now and Wednesday lunch time would be really helpful. -
Perverse considering the library hall was closed for a month late last year. Would you ever see a shop closed for a month for a refurb. The Coop was closed for 10 days and had much more done to it than the Library plans. Real issue of librarires using library builders and no shop fitters. Also shop fitters are quiet and desperate for business during lead up to Christmas for example - fantastic value can be found then for a library to be refurbished. The rfub will include self service terminals and free up a lot of space for people and books.

James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi edhistory, I have been a member of the East Dulwich Society for several years but believe I've let my membership lapse - but not sure as I haven't knowingly received a letter for renewing my subscription or a newsletter. -

Hi worldwiser, Useful feedback. Thank you. I had some casework for this issue about 3 years ago. So hopefully not a repetition of that. -
Cyclists BEWARE - Sainsbury's Dulwich
James Barber replied to AndrewFFF's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm amazed by Sainsbury's attitude. Whether people visit their shop by foot, bike, bus or car I doubt Sainsbury's wont to deter shoppers by making them feel insecure. Repointing or adding a CCTV camera is trivial - I've just organised the latter at my day job. When people were attacked in St.Francis Park that Sainsbury's is legally accountabel to maintain and were supposed to keep locked after sundown - they reintroduced part gate locking and we've not had any further reported incidents. So corporately they appear ot have some care. Hi AndrewFFF, If you want to increase the chance of Sainsbury's doing the decent thing for cyclists PM me for lcoal press contacts. -

Hi edhistory, I thin the point susiq is making is that the areas night time economy is causing problems for many residents. Many people chose to live hear before the 2005 licensing laws which have led to the area having much more alcolhol related problems - London Ambulance Service have recorded a 500% increase in calls related to alcohol abuse. Hi susiq, We're working on this issue and hope to come back to you in April on this. -
Spate of burglaries in East Dulwich
James Barber replied to EastDulwichRose's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Kailyn, You're much more likely normally to be burgled in the first 6 months of moving into a home. To can drstaically reduce this by making a big effort to get to know all your neighbours. In the process they get to know you and then spot suspicious behavoiour around your home. But as Prunella_Gatsby says. we are a low crime area for London but that is zero concilation to those who have the misfortune to become victims of crime. -

Hi Freddy1929, I've been assured the new replacement maintainable East Dulwich station up lighters will be switch on later today. I was given a little demo this morning. The other issues is the ticket office which is having a new low level counter added making it accessible to more people. This will open on Tuesday. And lastly the new screen by the ticket machines is working a treat now. -

Hi Freddy1929, Yes I was nonplussed when I was told they needed a different software version. I've been assured they'll be fab when working. As for maintenance, as they've been approved and project managed by the councils lighting department they'll maintain them. Unlike the up lighters arranged by the previous local councillors. -

Hi Calsug, Long saga. Applied for funding which we approved against Council lighting department quote. New lights slightly bigger than existing non maintianable up lighters. So diamond drilling to increase their size. Pulling new cables and new electric connection to the mains. Lights don't switch on. Back to the manufacturers who state a new software download is required. Download, donwloaded and still dont work. New uplighters to be provided by suppliers and installed and then they should work. I've been told by end of this month ie. this week. NB. this is only for the semi circle of up lighters. The two uplighters either end of the two bridge supports (so that's 8) are not included in this scheme. I'm sure we'll come back to these at a later date. -

Hi P68, edhistory, Thanks Penguin68 for collating those states for the four wards. I have tried to get just SE22 crime stats which I agree is how most people think of East Dulwich. I think people were interested in residential burglary rather than the total of all crimes. East Dulwich ward has a lot of crimes associated with having a high street. Hi Pugwash, LPrince, We're investigating how we can help fight this issue. Providing free window locks is one idea but getting people to install them is a real issue. Hi mynameanywhere, I'd be amazed if the police respond to your queries with anything the'd wish to be made public. Local Police have said that the most that can be publicly statesd- other than sash windows on ground floors - is they have several lines of enquiry. -

James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Towbleygreen, Many thanks will look later in the week - I'm just back from a weeks holiday so lots of catching up. Hi LPrince, Markeddie, Burglary isn't out of control in the East Dulwich ward area. Weirdly The Gardens are in Peckham Rye ward. For East Dulwich ward and Village wards the Police team pinged over the attached stats. For East Dulwich ward during the last 12 months we've had 12 burglaries from 5,200 homes. So on average we should all expect ot be burgled every 41.6 years. But burglars are smarter than this suggests. They tend to repeat either of a home they've burgled or of a neighbouring home that is lilkely to have the same internal layout and goods. Henve why in East Dulwich we've purchased 2,500 property marking kits to be given out free by our local Police. The idea is to inncolate homes around those burgled as well as part of the support package of those who've sadly been burgled. Other neighoburing ward councillors have not chosen to support free crime prevention kit. The main trend is for burglars to gain access via ground floor sash windows from the rear of properties. So please do install really good sash window locks. The best are bolts that go through the two middle cross beams - one lock at each end. Even I've installed these types of window locks and all our local DIY shops stock them. They're also no expensive. Hope this helps put a little context on this. -

The cabinet councillor for the environment cllr Barrie Hargrove has said that dog poo on pavements is reducing (21/1 scrutiny sub committee). Superficially dog poo reports were 3,732 in 2010 and reduced to 1,642 in 2011. More than halving. Do you think this is how it feels? -

Hi JDR, Apologies for the delay. My first line oif enquiry didnt work out so had to try and different tack. GP performance is now managed through the NHS Commissioning Board. I've the contact name for complants and issues. If anyone with Dulwich Medical Centre complaints or comments emails me I'd propose I collate them and then persue the matter. -

Boy they are those uplighters a saga. An original project 2002 put the original up lighters in. But they were never handed over to thE Southwark lighting department to be maintained. East Dulwich cllrs were told it would take ?10,000 to replace the pre existing ones with ones that could be maintained. ?10,000 allocated from our annual ?80,000 of Cleaner, Greener, Safer capital funding. We tried to get the South Camberwell ward councillors to go halves as the ward boundary is along the middle of the railway tracks but they never seem support projects involving the station - suspect they think most users come from East Dulwich ward. The shelter added last year was funded by East Dulwich ward funds for example. Southwark lighting organise new up lighters. This meant removing the old ones and very slightly diamnond drilling larger holes. Running new calbes. Lights fitted. They don't work. Philips then assures Southwark team it was a software version problem. Software up issued. Not working properly. Philips now in process of replacing the up lighters. This is expected to be resolved around 18 March. However, each side of the road has a couple of uplighters on the massive supporting walls next ot the road. The project it turns out didn't include these. Something for next year. So 18 March the large semi circle of uplighters will be replaced with fully working lights. As LED's we can have a colour light show. -
Proposed Harris Primary School
James Barber replied to rgutsell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Clearly Gove have a philisophy to push that it out there on the tory right wing fringes. He gets away with his daft views partly because he represents an extremely safe tory seat. Fortunately much of what he;s proposed has been blocked or watered down by the coalition. But an existing charity wouldn't find it easy to change from being a registered charity. Lord Harris the Ark founders, etc have never shown anything other than philanthropic inclinations towards education however much I diasgree with his politics. -
Hi PAULLONDON, I'm really sorry to hear you've bene burgled. Horrible experience. Hi lane lover, Southwark residential burglaries 12 months to end of January'13 were 1,952 compared to the 12 months upto end Jan;'12 2,157. So down 9.5%. But for East Dulwich crime is markedly up and this is probably due to our Safer Neighbourhood Team being abstracted (told to work elsewhere) from our area. Boris has decided to remove the dedicated East Dulwich team to fight crime elsewhere. Effectively he's decided areas such as ours should have fewer Police resources even when that results in more crime so they can fight crime in other areas. As it was we get disproportionately less Police resources than other areas but he's determined to end Safer Neughbourhoold Teams. If you think this is outrageous tell him via:- http://www.london.gov.uk/priorities/policing-and-crime/community-engagement

Rucksack & wallet stolen at Sainsburys - take care

How grim. I'm really sorry to hear this. Sainasbury's may have CCTV covering where it happened. Please do report it to the Police - if nothing else it may help it not happening to another busy parent.
