former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi first mate, Yes, to your first two points. We're fighting to avoid this earlier deliveries. CGS ?15,000. Over the years we had numerous complaints from Chesterfield Grove residents about Iceland lorries. The fact at the moment M&S are stating they're not accessing their site via this junction doesn't preclude this n the future. So we want to block this delivery route for 18 wheelers once and for. Hence the proposal. So the current junction is designed to allow 18 wheeler lorries to turn left from Melbourne Grove and access what is now the M&S shop. A normal junction would not have such a huge curve - swept path - to allow such long lorries. Fixing the pavement - Ill log that on our list for our devolved highways budget. Thanks for raising. Hi eddeal1, I don't think that's terribly fair. Cllr Rosie Shimell covers our face to face surgeries - I have kids so covering more online activities works better for my circumstances Especially considering work and family commitments. Hi ipool, if you email me the details and ideally a picture of two to support your appeal I'll raise with the head of parking. Often the ticket, where compelling case, is then cancelled. As you highlight that saves lots of time and money for both parties. Best email to read me is [email protected] -
knife crime in dulwich and muggings
James Barber replied to eddeal1's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Cllr Rosie Shimell and I are organising personal hand held metal detectors for East Dulwich ward local Police. We did this some years ago for the whole of front linePolcie in Southwark - but officers move on. They make it far quicker, less intrusive and safer for Police to check during a search if someone had any metal on them - knives, needles, etc. It's a tiny step towards helping the Police. Local Police ask that people report suspicious activities. Give them more intel to work with. -
Burglary today (on Dunstans Road)
James Barber replied to Broyal's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I really can't emphasis that to fully understand how to protect your home better this survey is the bees knees and it only takes 5 minutes - https://goo.gl/gGG3BT Hi Lcpt, This is terrible. When we had this happen to us it took some time to get over it. In the mean time we installed a Manchester bar and a London bar protecting re enforcing the wooden door frame. We also added bolts projecting from the door on the hinge side. That then meant the back door needed to be looked at and window locks. I hate to be miserable about this but burglars have a tendency to repeat on the same victims and their neighbours. So you need to upgrade your home security and tell all your neighbours so they also act to avoid becoming victims. The Met call this cocooning. The research I've read is to treat burglaries esp. as infectious diseases that we need to inoculate through home security upgrades against. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi ianr, They have and are being installed in properties owned by the people living there, tenants of council properties, tenants of private properties. So no, the beneficiaries are not all relatively well-off. I would suggest the reduction in crime benefit us all - as residents and as tax payers. The cost. Yes bike anchors can be bought for ?50. The ones we're providing are really solid and go 30cm down. See attached schematic. We're providing for a concrete solid base 45cm deep etc to be built for the anchors to be attached onto that can't be budged. Most paving is not sufficiently deep to attach a proper anchors to. ianr Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Since it's only property owners who can give > permisison for the installation of a motor cycle > anchor, isn't this ?500 going just to those who > are relatively most well-off? James Barber replied to Broyal's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Broyal, i hate to be negative but burglars have a propensity to repeat - not just the same victim but neighbours as well. The latter as they think neighbours typically very similar home layout and goods. Former because you'll get replacement stuff. if you have a wooden door frame I would suggest you get a Manchester and London bar and those bolts things that stick out from the door on hinge side that made it so much hard to break door down. Ensure you have good windows locks or bolts for sash windows. Please do tell your neighbours - they are at risk now. And ideally they'd be 'inoculated' from this by knowing. -

Hi geobz, You do the Police a disservice. Crime has fallen dramatically in the last 20 years. Both reported crime and crime levels recorded through annual crime surveys. This is partly from an aging population. Partly from lead being removed from petrol. Partly from designing crime out. And I thought I made the point mobiles should be designed to be useless once deactivated remotely. That gov't legislation. I 'don't eat from the same table' as the London Mayor. Apart from being different political parties being a councillor is something I do as well as have a full time day job. As indeed do almost all other councillors or they're retired. As for listening. If you don't try you definitely wont get a response from the London Mayor. You can ask the mayor questions via this page - https://www.london.gov.uk/about-us/london-assembly/questions-mayor -
This is truly bizarre. Such a survey/consultation was carried out about 18 months ago. We've been repeatedly told the analysis hadn't been undertaken for lack of resources. So they've taken a similar level of resource to run a new consultation broadly repeating the exercise! Hi P68, I'll ask why these details are being asked for.

Moped mugging on East Dulwich Road by Goose Green

Hi DulwichLondner, It is immensely frustrating. But would you want a son, daughter, partner, friend, neighbour killed by an out of control moped or scooter ridden by someone being chased or even the police car or cars chasing them about a smartphone theft. Epseically when those phones can be valueless if the owner uses some common sense. The obvious solution is to make smartphone valueless once stolen. It is imperative we all ensure our smartphone locks/pins/passwords are used and remain hidden and not 1111. Regulation about their design so they can be deactivated remotely (that means us all noting the IMEI code for our phones), the speed phone companies can process a theft report and deactivate a phone, not buying knock-off goods/smartphones. -

Hi Broyal, I'm really sorry to hear you suffered from a burglary. If you need a free property marking kit contact me. You might like to undertake this online survey about how protected your home is - I found it really useful and fixing things / upgrading house protection has been keeping me busy - https://goo.gl/gGG3BT -

Hi geobz, I can't dispute the ugly comment. But what do you expect a local councillor to do to fix this? I can't make the Police break their London wide held rules for chasing people on scooters. You'd need to convince the Mayor of London to change that policy. You can email them him at - [email protected] I suspect he doesn't read this forum. What Cllr Rosie Shimell and I are doing around crime prevention - and have been since 2007 - free home property marking kits, anti attack alarms (we'll be restocked with these shortly), alertboxes to help businesses protect each other, free motorbike ground anchors to make it much harder to steal these scooters in the first place, purse bells, gating alleyways. If you can think of any other crime prevention please let me know. -
Flats being demolished in Solomons Passage SE15
James Barber replied to joymar's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi schokoschnecke, Historically building works has only been allowed Mon-Fri 8am-6pm and Sat 8am-1pm. But over the last few years the council have been quite liberal allowing works t other times if they're not noisy. Builders quite often try it on. The other factor is without a Construction Management Plan the pavements and highway often gets taken over by builders. The council is now extremely plaint to builders on this. But overall you should be ok those hours work for you and your household. -

Motorbike parking alternatives?
James Barber replied to benfaulkner's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This is the feedback I've had: " [Your constituent] current position on the garage waiting list is 214th for the Dulwich area. When prospective garage tenants apply we inform them that there is a wait for a garage and that we are unable to ascertain how long they may wait. Once someone rents a garage from the council they may keep it for a couple of months or many years, thus making it difficult to say how long the wait will be. As soon as a garage becomes available we contact the person at the top of the waiting list for the area specified, offering them the garage, if they do not take up the offer we go to the next person on the list and so on. The waiting list changes rapidly with people being assigned a garage and new people being added to the waiting list which would make it very difficult to keep everyone informed of their position on a regular basis. " It might be worth you asking, possibly via this forum, if any current garage renters wish to share especially if they're only keeping a motorbike in a garage. -

General election candidates?

Lib Dems Gail Kent Lab Helen Hayes Are the only ones announced so far for Dulwich & West Norwood. A number of East Dulwich people are actually in the Camberwell & Peckham constituency with only the following two candidates so far in place. Lib Dem Michael Bukola Labour Harriet Harman -
Hi DeeDee, Apologies it has taken quite so long but I have some answers for you. The yellow box is active and will be enforced. It's there to ensure access to the end of Friern Road where in an emergency the bollards can be removed for access.

A total of 3,165 on time primary applications for the September 2017 intake have been received. This is a further increase in numbers and contrary to the forecasts shared at the Dulwich Community Council. A total of 2,796 (88.3%) families received an offer at their first preference school ? this is an increase of 3.2% compared to last year and locally in Dulwich made possible by the new primary schools local parents supported - Belham, Harris East Dulwich Primary recently and the Judith Kerr several years previously. 3,108 (98.2%) Southwark families have received one of the 6 preferences they listed. Sadly 57 families did not receive a school out of the 6 schools they listed and have been allocated an alternative school place at the nearest school to each family?s home with capacity. If you're one of those families and need help do get in touch. Attached is a Primary Q&A and details for help/advice if you need it.

Cyclist taken to major trauma centre - sounds grim. This will be a Police investigation and potential charges. Not sure it's helpful to speculate on this thread while evidence being collected and until a jury have decided against any charges.

Hi P68, I'll try and find that out for you. Hi rendellharris, DulwichLondoner, I think you're both missing the point that in the last 20 years the population of London has risen from 6.5M to 8.5M inhabitants. The forecasts are for a similar increase in the next 20 years. Whatever you do, without a huge decrease in the ratio of people owning and using cars you're going to get much more congestion. In fact London has been seeing a small decrease in the proportion of residents owning cars - but so many more people more than counter this I absolute numbers of cars. Hence why the Congestion Charging Zone is now congested again! IF we were to reach Amsterdam or Copenhagen levels of people cycling it would largely counter this huge increase in population.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

Hi alex_b, I'll check out that thread in a moment. One of my past roles was as a Human Computer Interface expert - loved it. Yes, the 'new' council website - aimed to make it more mobile friendly - makes the desktop, ipad type user experience much worse. Real retrograde step. I've also found my mobile use of the website much poorer. I've tried raising this and effectively had a King's clothes conversation. Sorry. -
Bus route 176 is being re contracted. New buses new timetables. New service started June. The plan is to rebalance the service for when greater use occurs - the negative consequences are less with the one hour bus ticket concept Caroline Pidgeon campaigned for. Either way, in response to concerns about the degree of rebalancing: " Subject: REPLY: Bus Route 176 Dear Caroline Thank you for your email. We carry out regular reviews to the bus network to allow us to determine the needs of a given route and ensure the level of resources is matched to the demand experienced. When we make changes to the frequency of a service, we aim to ensure the capacity offered is sufficient to accommodate the regular route usage, based on our passenger usage data. For example, if a route sees relatively low usage throughout the day but there is a narrow timeframe where a higher frequency is needed, a low frequency would be sufficient for the majority of the day. Rather than running a high frequency route at all times, which would lead to considerable cost without an accompanying passenger benefit, we would look to introduce a low frequency route with additional trips in place only for the period of higher usage. This enables us to ensure that our limited financial resources are used in the most effective way, and reduces unnecessary vehicle levels on London?s streets, as well as helping to reduce unnecessary emissions across the network. In the case of route 176, we are looking to reduce the Monday-Saturday daytime and weekend night frequencies to better match actual usage. We developed this proposal following a review of passenger usage on route 176, however I would add that we are also looking to include additional journeys in the peak towards Tottenham Court Road in the morning and towards Penge in the afternoon, to accommodate extra usage at these times. These changes are due to occur in June 2017. I hope this information is helpful. "

Royal Mail Sorting Office Closure Meeting..
James Barber replied to DulwichFox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi nxjen, The sorting office on Alleyn Park was closed a number of years ago for parcel collections. This has been a trend for some many years. They give two reasons. 1. somewhere to park vehicles. I've suggest some public highway could be designated to help resolve that. 2. sheer quantity of parcels. I need to explore this. -
