former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi ianr, Am I correct in understanding your argument is that close to half of 20mph speed limits are being exceeded so why be bothered locally? Across East Dulwich my lot have organised efforts to address this. We've had speed humps installed on Melbourne Grove (north), Ashbourne, Chesterfield, Matham instantly come to mind. -

Hi jaywalker, 85% of the traffic there travels at 24mph or slower. 15% travels faster. The speed limit is 20mph. When 1 in 6 or 7 vehicles is more than 20% faster than the speed limit I'd call that speeding. Hi Charlie, You suggested closing Melbourne Grove. They heard that from a councillor and thought it good advice. I'm sure you and me both wish this had never arisen. Eitherway I'm sure we'll work to resolve this once and for all. -
Southwark Kerbside Strategy Consultation Opens!!!

Hi Abe_froeman, The consultation report will be made public and it will be listened to. But rahrahrah perspective can mean a lack of responses and things do then much more easily go through despite many peoples misgivings. Hi fiddles, That is my understanding. Wide open roads encourage speeding. -

Hi rich, That is really unfair. The Melbourne Grove (south) was set- up because they wanted to reduce speeding on their road. Cllr Charlie Smith suggested the best way to achieve that goal might be to close one end. The group didn't come up with that idea. And quite understandably felt they should take advice from a councillor. I think you know this Robin so it doesn't seem very fair to misrepresent them like this. On Saturday after the Dulwich Community Council I walked you home and we visited this junction and you sounded at the time supportive of this change. So I'm puzzled with your post. It is really difficult if you're going to be so inconsistant. -

Hi Abe_froeman, I'm unable to guarantee that because Labour Southwark have removed the decision making for such things away from ward councillors and given it to a single Labour councillor called Ian Wingfield. I will give strong representation to him but he will be influenced by council officers. But overall I would hope we end up with the same amount of kerb line space for people to park at despite this risk because instead of being an arc minimising kerb line it would be a 90 degree corner which maximises kerb line. I'm afraid I've not done the maths for the overall impact. -

Hi first mate, The wide splay on northern side allowing faster turning - compare it to the junction with Ashbourne Grove for example. Hi Jaywalker, The junction is twice the width of other junctions. Making it normal sized will reduce crossing distances making it safe for people walking. It will also deter articulated lorries from delivering to M&S. This used to be there route for Iceland. Currently M&S is in breach of it's planning conditions but is likely to return to this route as the junction appears designed for articulated lorries to turn. Hi rch, The highway changes will be consulted upon which would be a great opportunity for contrary views to object. Hi Abe_froeman, You must have been away for a while. I've campaigned to block lots of double yellow lines being installed across East Dulwich. Extra are not part of what I've signed up for. -

Hi Burbage, You beat me to it. Part of the Draft Kerbside Strategy is to make it compulsory to have 7.5m of double yellow lines at every junction. -

Hi bels123, Sure. It is expected to use this to normalise the junction of Chesterfield grove with Melbourne Grove. Currently it is designed to maximise speeding. -
I'd suggest trellis with thorny climbers over broken glass and nails. Looks nicer and even more of a deterrent as it ends up higher obstacle to scale. Charlie mentioned Smartwater. Since 2008 we've buying SelectaDNA property marking kits. Smartwater or Metrace has a much shorter shelf life and costs more than SelectaDNA. Either way if you'd like a kit please email me your details and I'll drop one round.

Hi georgeeepee, How truly scary. You should get some advice from local Police about how to harden your property to reduce chance if this happening again. Please let me know if you don't and I'll chase.

Any East Dulwich ward residents who want a ground anchor in their front garden can have them installed free paid for by the council in our local attempt to prevent crime. Email me for the application form with your address as well so I can confirm you're the area of benefit of the current ward boundaries. -

The resurfacing is planned to take place 8am to 5pm and over night 9pm to 5am each day and night. Pity the residents there. The works are fund and paid for by TfL as it's a red route. The diversion will be along Melford Road, with all its parking suspended from 6pm to 6am each night, which will be made two -way for these works. Please see attached letter that all residents should have received by now.

Hi shell, Apologies for delay coming back to you - terrible cold. Have reported both. Latter will be much more painful to solve as Sainsbury's responsibility and after a number of years have obtained minimal traction with them - they're ignoring a legal requirement on them to properly maintain St.Francis Park and the council is understandably loath to spend lots on lawyers to make it happen.. -
In East Dulwich we have a bigger issue of some local businesses not paying staff at all - I've had a number of items of casework where I've helped organise solicitor letters to extract wages from local businesses. Ideally everyone would be in receipt of the LLW. If East Dulwich Picturehouse closed Curzon would snap the lease up. When Cllr Rosie Shimell, former councillor Jonathan Mitchell and I were searching for cinema operators we had four interested parties and the Picturehouse won out with the landlord. So I don't see a risk of this boycott in us losing such a valuable local resource. But I do feel concern about a boycott of one cinema when we don't know how people are paid at the alternative. Would be great to know people employed at PeckhamPlex are paid the LLW before favouring it by boycotting the nearest competitor. NB. I should declare I'm a member of ED Picturehouse membership scheme.

I hope you're one of the 65% of families to be offered your first preference for September 2017 secondary school places. We don't yet have this broken down by post code or ward to see if we're better or worse than this average for Southwark. But this is a 5% improvement on last year which must have something to do with the new Charter East Dulwich school the campaign started on this forum and when the Haberdashers Borough Acsdemy opens this will go up further. If you're not happy please see attached Q&A. Drop in sessions are also available for families - tomorrow 2 March 10-12 & 1-2.30 Cambrifge House, 1 Addington Square, SE5 0HF. OR call 020 7525 5337 or email [email protected] Or contact one of your local councillors.

Hi jLo, Apologies for not picking this up sooner - real stinker of a cold that is proving hard to recover from. For something urgent like this please always email directly. I would have seen it on Friday and acted immediately. Either way I've now reported it and hope we can ensure it doesn't happen again. Unacceptable. jLo Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Morning James! There's a crew of builders with a > cement mixer on the lane this morning, next to > William Rose. Hi singalto, I have contacted Royal Mail and taken part in a first conference call with them. They explained that 8 February a feasibility study about closing East Dulwich SE22 sorting office. That a final decision hasn't been taken yet. I explained residents are under the impression two reasons for this proposal. 1st lack of Royal Mail parking and 2nd the increased volume of parcels. For the former I suggested it might be possible to permanently allocated several spaces if we knew what the scale of this issue was. For the latter issue they couldn't quantify the scale of this problem on our call. They have promised to find out more detail for our second call early next week. One comment they made is if the sorting office closed they could potentially provide an alternate location for parcels such as a local post office. I explained the local Crown Post Office on Lordship Lane appears to have only limited space. Frankly if this was a viable solution then the current sorting office would have even more space to remain open.
