What is replacing the Old Garden Centre??
James Barber replied to guernseyman's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi rahrahrah, Not quite. The developers have found construction prices have rocketed. So they've applied to straighten the building to make it a tad simple to build and therefore cheaper. IN doing this the number of flats will be reduced from 22 to 20. Still planned two ground floor spaces. One a new Grove Vale library to be provided no a peppercorn rent 125 year lease and the other a retail unit. This retail unit was going to be Morrisons who have since back out - another contribution to the delays. But I'm told they're now getting start. The hoarding licence end Feb2017. -
Opening of Charter School East Dulwich
James Barber replied to Charlie Smith's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Fab isn;t it. Rosie and I couldn't make the 2-3pm event in Camberwell as only a couple of weeks notice and work diaries couldn't be changed. But we did make them laying committee and spoke and obtained a few changes to help local residents for the permanent buildings. Let me know when you're free Charlie and I'll brief you on these changes. -
Ultra low emissions zone
James Barber replied to TheArtfulDogger's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi The ArtfulDogger, I very much doubt it would cost anything like that to actively monitor it. But I suspect much of the monitoring would be via where vehicles are registered. Witnessed air pollution of moving vehicles what 10 years ago. The system cost ?100,000 then per vehicle lane. They could tell how many cylinders were working from the emitted air pollution. So the systems available now must be even smarter and significantly cheaper. Hi bil, People can find alternatives to diesel vehicles but people can't avoid breathing (for long). So again I think the balance of unfairness is people having to breath polluted air over finding replacements for cars and vans. -
Ultra low emissions zone
James Barber replied to TheArtfulDogger's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi ford, stephent, You're right it would be unfair. But I can't help feeling it's even more unfair for the 10,000 avoidable premature deaths resulting from the avoidable air pollution. -
Hi rch, I'd love one of those access points locally. But you know most of the population of Southwark are in the Camberwell and Peckham area and further north - hence why they have MySouthwark F2F access points and we don't. To create a new access point would cost significant sums in both CAPEX and OPEX. My priorities would be getting the streets cleaned properly, answering the telephone with real people to handle queries.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Abe_froeman, Yes they do but once closed hard to make them reopen it if the pavement is kept dug up. Personally I think the council should give ultimatum either the developer reopens it with pavement made good or the council will do it and bill them putting a charge against new property. But that takes real effort on the part the council which they would argue they don't have the resource for - but you do it once or twice and developers would soon be more reasonable saving much more effort long-term. Hi Nigella, I made a point of going out at the weekend and reporting lots of ponding issues. Thanks for the prod though and sure it won't all be fixed quickly. -

James Barber replied to Pugwash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi ITATM, That one of my feedback questions to TfL. Why the sudden requirement? The arguments originally given were spurious and showed they'd not visited the site. -
Hi FM, M&S CIL for local spending = ?11,000 the rest gets creamed of for central budgets. That ?11k has lots of hoops connected with it. The Community Mental Health Team based at 20-22 Lordship Lane support people from Camberwell, Dulwich and Peckham. The bulk of those patients live in Camberwell and Peckham. So it would make much more sense to base the service at a more convenient location for all service users. They recently relabelled the team Dulwich but I suspect because the service providers prefer to be based in East Dulwich - and their business is welcome in local shops - for a host of reasons. They can probably commute by car for example. I can;t see why the ground floor couldn't be returned to shops and the upper floors kept as now offices. Hi Robin, I admire your determination swimming against the current administrations determination to only have online comms with residents. We can no longer have residents talking to real people unless they prove they have no relation anywhere with internet access! So much as I think a F2F option locally would be great I can't see it happening.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Rob, Council planning department are not coping with demand. So not asking for a Construction Management Plan avoids extra work for them. They've stated in writing to me they wouldn't normally think to ask for this for such a sized scheme. But then we see narrow roads have a pavement lost to the general public for two years and for around 20 months one of only two lanes of traffic. Heart rending the stories of how local businesses have lost trade as a result. -

Hi BB, I don't think Bus Stands are allocated to particular bus routes. I don't recall seeing them labelled. -

James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks RM. Saved me a job this evening. And yes I have objected to the Dulwich Hotel development unless it includes a Construction Management Plan. The old Police Station site is actually in Peckham Rye ward - and to be honest I assumed those councillors would handle it. I now check neighbouring wards planning applications for - Peckham Rye ward, South Camberwell Ward, Village ward and College ward so I don't get caught out like this again. -
Hi kristymac1, andrews, After some digging this is what I found. Dulwich Hamlet hired the Alleyns theatre for free. They were charged for time of staff hired by the hour to do the lighting and sound at cost. Alleyns do now run all bars at the theatre, some users hadn't left things correctly, but again any profits are deducted from the above costs. So Dulwich Hamlet to hire a 400 seat theatre for three nights with professional light and sound were charged net ?379. I also asked about playing fields - Heber use them Thursday am, new Harris primary school Tuesday am - every week after half-term.

Hi Artful/RobMiller, I'm .........annyed. I was promised that hoarding would be removed many months ago. So I took some photos yesterday and will chase the officers who made the promises tonight after work. -
What a fab picture - thanks John.

Hi Vestii, The change to licensing laws would make it difficult to operate a pay bar by an organization not related to the licence holder. They can't break the law. But if someone can think of a smart way round this I'll happily talk to the bursar. Generally the school reports they support the ocumminty - http://www.alleyns.org.uk/page.aspx?id=110 Hi andrewc, How much do they charge to use the theatre?

yet amother bus stand in Barry Road.
James Barber replied to Pugwash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
No they're not. What they are proposing and I have objected to is that the exiting Bus Stand outside Christchurch (264 Barry Road) change is hours of operation from 11pm-8am to 24/7. They've made spurious reasons of being close to bus driver amenities. Which this bus stand isn't. The amenities are SW end of Friern Road - took me three years working with GLA AM Caroline Pidgeon to get them in place. I've objected on the basis it would mean users of Christchurch couldn't be dropped there. Ideally we'd have a disabled parking bay there for example. The current hours work well around Christchurch. With such less bus sand at night frankly this bus stand should be removed. But I'll work to stop its hours of operations extended first and then try and get it removed. TfL are taking my objections away to consider. -

James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi BNG, P68, Their hoarding licence end Feb'17. I understand they've been seeking some minor amendments to make the building cheaper to construct - to compensate for construction inflation. And my understanding still new library is party of the scheme with a couple less flats and same retail. -

Travellers (no longer) on Dulwich Hospital site
James Barber replied to Marjoram's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Some of you might have heard that a group of Travellers had got into the Dulwich Hospital site earlier in the week, so please be assured that our local East Dulwich Ward team, along with the council and the NHS, acted extremely efficiently and therefore the site was cleared this morning with no problems. From this point onwards there will be 24-hour security on the site, which will be visible from the Jarvis Road gated entrance. This will consist of a caravan site office and security patrols with dogs. The security company is called Cushman & Wakefield and they are encouraging local residents to engage with them and feel free to report any concerning activities to them as well as phoning 101 or 999 as appropriate. The phone number I have on the card of Sean Watson, the Regional Manager, that I was given is 020 3296 3818 or their main number is 020 3296 3000, in case any local resident wants to phone and make contact with a view towards determining the best way to liaise. -
