Oh yes, I'm aware of that Blah - I'm not disputing for a second the terrible harm done to the planet by an over-reliance on beef and dairy (don't know if anyone's watched Cowspiracy? it's a bit sixth form in outlook, but utterly compelling in its message). I'm firmly of the belief that people should take responsibility for what they consume - food, clothing, consumer goods, the lot. I'm very far from perfect, but I try to educate myself and do what I can. I know I could do better. But I do find myself getting wound up by people who blithely talk about the suffering of little bitty animals, without for a second thinking about the suffering of the planet or its population in relation to all the other choices they make.

I guess I wasn't terribly specific, but things like soya causing mass deforestation, our western faddish taste for quinoa (not sure about fake prawns, but I know it's in Linda McCartney's fake scampi) now pricing native bolivians and peruvians out of their own nutritious crop, so they're forced to eat cheap junk food instead, demand for almond milk killing bees and causing drought - this all sticks in my craw a bit when I'm being preached at by vegetarians who eat this stuff. To be fair, it's only really the OP who's been preachy, but the post put me in mind of high horses and glass houses and black pots and the like. And surely if you love animals / the planet, people not eating them for even 6 months is preferable to not giving up at all.

Yeah, Jah, that's an unusually unsympathetic response from you, and unwarranted. It is intimidating. I've intervened in the past when a man was racially abusing a woman on a packed bus. He turned on me and started threatening, at quite some volume, to rape me with his crutch. Which now, with the passage of time, sounds kind of funny it's so preposterous, but at the time I genuinely feared for my safety. The driver did nothing. None of the other passengers did anything. We held our own until eventually he got off the bus, at which point I felt really shaky and tearful, and I'm pretty bolshy. You never know when it's going to turn nasty. There've been instances of women physically attacked and even killed for rejecting an unknown man's unacceptable behaviour, so not saying something there and then isn't remotely pathetic. Perfume smells different on skin from on paper, so something you like the smell of may not smell the same when she wears it. One question, and I don't mean to be a black hat bastard about things, but has she expressed that she'd like to try a new perfume? If not, it might be worth getting her the matching parfum (if she has the eau de toilette say) or body lotion. I only say this because perfume's a very personal thing, and I've had people buy me perfume in the past that was perfectly nice, but I never wore because it just wasn't me. That said, Jo Malone's a good shout. All gorgeous.

Thanks Strafer. Similar in the client / agency situation, but unfortunately in the me / agency situation, I've been here less than a year, and am on a freelance contract. So they're unlikely to look kindly on my move. And Mick, that's what I'm wondering. I know they're not above suing generally (though clients for unpaid work that wasn't yet contracted, rather than staff). Also, if they did sue me, I'm not sure what they could get - I'm pretty much penniless. But I don't know if they could sue to prevent my working with the client.

Yeah, thanks Dave. Unfortunately, the client isn't under contract with any restriction clauses in place - only I am. So it's all going to be my own risk. Just going to have to bite the bullet and fork out the few hundred to get legal advice.
