  1. On the basis that the patch of tarmac they're growing through is crumbling and on the basis that they're over three feet high. Wild flowers I like. These ain't flowers.
  2. The absurdity is that we have nothing alive in our garden. All the green waste we put into our bin is from stuff that either falls, blows or grows over our neighbours' fences. Lately, I've been clearing the pavements along our road given the monstrous and destructive weeds that have been allowed to sprout and I'm not inclined to volunteer to pay extra for the privilege of disposing of this.
  3. I have the opposite problem. In that I haven't paid and yet they're still emptying it.
  4. We heard them. I'm just bewildered at the idea that someone, somewhere thinks that there's cause for celebration. What, because the pubs reopened?
  5. All you need to know. https://www.southwark.gov.uk/planning-and-building-control/design-and-conservation/conservation-areas?chapter=11
  6. Would you also recommend your architect? Could you post details also?
  7. The brazenness has reached new levels. Soneone from the flats above Foxtons has dumped a bed and two mattresses right on the corner of LL. You can't even get through on the pavement.
  8. We've been with Virgin for 15 years or so. The trouble is that they offer blisteringly fast speeds that no other local domestic provider can (yet) match, especially on the up side. Yes, they can go offline from time to time which is utterly infuriating, but other providers are certainly not immune. If you want a guaranteed service you have to go with a leased line commercial provider that will cost you a fortune. And while it would be more reliable it won't be anywhere near as fast. From what I read and hear there is no super supplier. They all have their faults so I say stay with the one you know.. unless you particularly like the other services from their competitors.
  9. I simply refuse to condemn another parent or dictate to them at a time of unparalleled stress and during an international calamity with no more evidence than a screaming child. And neither should anyone else. You haven't the slightest idea what they may be going through or dealing with. My instinct is inclined to compassion not confrontation. How truly wonderful life must be for those who can use their free time to squabble on this forum while the hardship many are facing is very real. Leave them alone. Or better still, put a note through their door and say you're here for them as a neighbour if they should need.
  10. I think it would be better to assume that, whatever situation your neighbours are in, they are doing the very best they can in impossible circumstances. Your life is not everyone else's life. Your kids are not other people's kids. What you perceive as being a straightforward and polite request may very well not be for a whole host of reasons that I need not enumerate here.
  11. Oh Abe, that sounds like a belter of a plan. It's a six month job on a totally derelict house so whether it's the skip or the contractor van, we have no choice. I absolutely refuse to write a cheque for 6 grand to this council for the privilege of using a piece of their crappy potholed tarmac when people in the next street can do it for next to nothing. It's completely outrageous.
  12. And here's the kicker, not only do they charge you the same per day whether the restriction is 2 hours or 10, but they even charge you for the days when there are no restrictions!!
  13. With all these new parking zones, the council tells me this is what it'll cost me per month to have a skip. Up from 80/month in a non CPZ street. Seriously?!?!
  14. I was going to say, where is this wonderful public transport you speak of? I thought this forum was for East Dulwich.
  15. It's not about being able to park in one's own street. It's being able to reliably park within 3 or 4 streets which is hardly ever possible where we live under normal circumstances. Since March I haven't once had to park more than a street away. So clearly the absence of commuters has made a significant difference. That the council has manufactured its own, self-serving, post-consultation rationale for creating a sole zone on the west side of LL and not the east is a craven and deliberate act that will haunt it forever.
  16. Crawthew Grove one was busted open last week and one bike stolen. Apparently they've reinforced it now, whatever that means. Since lockdown we've stopped using it anyway to avoid contact.
  17. I was parked next to someone in Crystal Palace Park today who had the police out for a catalytic converter theft. A Toyota. Seems this is going on everywhere.
  18. I've never seen that quantity of salt coming out of a newly built wall. Anyone have an idea why such a huge amount?
  19. I suppose it's only people who have lost a job and have to beg for some money from the government to live on, have to queue for an hour to buy food, need to pause your mortgage or rent payments and other debt, see family members in quarantine, have to home school your children... even if you didn't understand the reason for social isolation, you'd realise it was bloody serious. If you're not directly impacted by any of these things, you'd need to have it explained to you in a different way. And clearly that isn't happening.
  20. I've been to the Rye three times in the last week and every time I see teenagers playing in the playground. I especially sympathise with parents of children in this age group but they really need to get the message. As if a bolted gate and multiple signs weren't enough.
  21. It's really a question of who deserves them more. There's a global shortage of all PPE and there are people working in hospitals and other settings worldwide who are in constant danger and can't always get hold of it. They should be able to get access to masks before you. If they're to be of any real use, you'd have to replace them several times a day, fit them correctly and exercise the kind of clinical bodily hygiene that they carry out in operating theatres. Wearing one at the current time not only deprives key individuals of important kit but also sends a very visible message to the entire community that you think you're more important than hospital workers. If you're vulnerable or ill you shouldn't be out anyway and if you aren't either of these, you should be far enough away from others not to gain any significant benefit from having one.
  22. First of all 80% is not 100%. Nursery workers don't earn a huge amount to start with and some settings are topping up the government contribution. Rents and mortgages are not being underwritten, just postponed. Capital financing costs continue to accrue and will have to be covered eventually. Some workers are not covered by the furlough scheme - again our nursery is covering that. Nurseries are required to give you 15 hours but not 30. And they only make the numbers work by the additional paid hours and the wealthy individuals around here who don't qualify for them and have to pay the lot.
  23. Our nursery hasn't yet advised although they say they hope to offer a substantial discount. Please bear in mind that nurseries operate on a razor thin margin as it is, especially where many attendees qualify for 15 or even 30 hours 'free' childcare. In London the contribution the government makes is under the operating cost. If you want your nursery to still exist in a few months' time, pay them as much as you can afford.
