Mal, the adapted bikes at a velodrome is a far cry from practical use. Yes, maybe I can use one but then what, I get to my destination and just sit there because I can't get off / leave the bike without aides ? Pretty bloody useless if I want to go shopping or to thewl pub as sitting on an adapted bike makes them inaccessible and saying "someone will help you" is not the answer You are right, patents are risk adverse concerning children so they drive them everywhere but equally they may have two kids at different schools so walking isn't practical Earl, how does removing parking from side roads help buses? Lordship Lane maybe, Barry Road possibly but side roads where buses don't run ? Besides main roads are actually wide enough for car parking and buses to pass. As I said public transport needs to return to pre covid levels around here,if not better, before people will really consider leaving their cars at home. It's not a case of clearer roads will speed up buses as tfl have a schedule that even if the bus runs faster (school hols for example) they will be forced by the schedule to wait here to regulate the route which is even more frustrating then getting stuck in traffic

Again abelist ex lashes out. What I said was that public transport needs to be improved, I don't say that as an anti ltn stance but that not everyone can walk or cycle The under 17 comment is a joke as whilst they can't drive, mum and dad taxis are prevalent so they are driven 🤔 and the same is true for elderly and disabled who can't physically drive themselves Unfortunately without great public transport a large swathe of the population are disadvantaged by the drive towards the walking and cycling agenda as it excludes them. Please think before you dismiss comments by people who live with issues.
-
Again, the abelist response People can walk and cycle. There is a large swathe of local people who can't and with the reduction in train and bus frequency over the past few years your argument of alternatives doesn't work for everyone. The cuts to services need to be reversed otherwise those that find walking and cycling impossible or difficult will feel further alienated as the current schemes are not disabled friendly (trust me I speak from experience)
-
So ex, you are advocating the stick method and not the carrot method. Humans being human will buck and fight the stick but if you coerce them with incentives including better transport inferstructures they will start to leave their cars behind. This is especially true outside of London where public transport isn't as frequent or reliable. Telling people to give up their cars without a decent alternative frequent and reliable public transport system isn't going to work. We're partially lucky in London but even so the buses and trains don't have much more capacity as they stand and people will choose cars over them at the moment , especially on rainy days ⛈️

The local view is that the LTNs here have increased traffic on boundary roads and the south circular which seems to be increasing, not decreasing pollution. Without local data there's little proof to dispute these allegations. Equally, local transport has been reduced (less frequent no 12s is a good example) so reducing credible alternative forms of transport for those who have issues cycling or walking (for what ever reason) doesn't encourage less usage of cars. It's a bit like smokers, the government tried to tax them out of existence yet "Fag Anne" would be so desperate for her 'tine hit that she (generic) would sacrifice other things to get a packet of Woodbines, however since vaping came around as an alternative, actual sales of cigarettes has dropped and more people use alternatives. Before we can achieve reductions in car use, a better alternative has to be in place as the current offering has so many gaps and problems caused by underfunding.

Simply lift the back wheel and move them that way After all if the average 12 year old can then I'm curious If Mal is referring to a Tonka car 😅
-
I have had great fun watching the antics of kids concerning a lime bike near the front of where I live Twice I've seen kids (early to mid teens) pick the back of the bike up, run a few steps then drop the back wheel to "crack" the lock. Both times they failed and just left the bike where it was. I wonder if there are statistics available on how many legitimate hires occur verses how ofter the rider has cracked the lock?

Selective licensing for rentals extended
Spartacus replied to Ebenezer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What will happen here is that Landlords won't swallow the cost and whilst it's around £20 a month over three years, you can bet your left arm that the landlords will add on £50 a month to rents. Doesn't seem much but add that to the additions they are already adding to cover higher interest rates (and they are even higher if its a buy to let mortgage compared to domestic mortgage rates) then I fully expect rents to be increased to a point where only Mr and Mrs Sunak can afford them... Whilst a fair inspection and registration scheme is a good thing, the cost has to be sympathetic to the problems it will cause. -
Recently the algorithms on twitter seem to have changed (okay we all know they have) and timeliness are getting filled with more blue tick paid for content, conspiracy posts (Covid was a hoax and vaccine is responsible for higher sudden deaths amongst the current ones) , anti immigration and anti woke, anti anti everything type posts. Occasionally East of Dulwich makes it through but the rest of the really useful, interesting or local business tweets just aren't making it past the crud. Therefore I'm curious, are people still tweeting, are they just scrolling crap or are they off somewhere else ? It's a shame as what once was a useful (semi useful) business communication platform seens to be vanishing up its own deranged backside.

Also report it to the relevant bike company as they can come out and clean the bike quickly. My suspicion, like first mate, is that it's not a protester and given proximity to a school it's possible a young adolescent thinking it's funny and no real other motivation. Or the naked bike rider has struck again 😜

Selective licensing for rentals extended

In the 60s criminals tried to make perfect printing plates to print money. Now all they need to so is work for a council and come up with even more schemes with fees, CPZS, Selective Licencing, brown bin fee... the list goes on. Whilst all good intentions, the cost to the public is growing daily as none of the taxes by other names schemes are cheap. -
At least we won't miss these c̶y̶c̶l̶i̶s̶t̶s̶ I mean rockers on the road

Looks like you fell foul of your point 2, no one said hatred of cyclist however a dislike of dangerous cyclist I will agree to. Point 3, lycra obsession seems to be a favourite of cyclists not me, I just think that it's unnecessary for a quick ride from here to central London. The dangerous infrastructure comment, you raised that by trying to deflect from the loss of a mass transit bus lane by trying make out bus drivers splat cyclists, most on the other hand have a healthy respect for them. You do seem to play out of the LCC playback by trying to put down other posters and comment only on a small portion of what is really being said. I believe you are another user under a pseudonym and I call you out Kolly Kibber, I demand my 5 shillings

How small minded of you, I'm talking delivery vehicles to shops, resturants, cafes and other businesses not amazon packages. Without these deliveries, London businesses will cease to be and don't say "cargo bike" as I'm sure a full delivery to a local supermarket won't fit on a cargo bike. As for lycra, it's a very peculiar thing in the UK that cyclist feel they need to dress like they are all in the tour de France and wearers think they have the right to pass through red lights and crossing like they are invisible. Personally I think they all look like twits. But that's my own personal opinion and one i am entitled to hold, so yes I will scoff them for wearing lycra, cleats and other silly things which seem to make them more aggressive cyclists. 😜
-
Has anything gone wrong before? Or is that your mantra to justify making London more congested for buses ? Unbelievable As for removing the car Lane across Waterloo Bridge, that would remove access to taxis, disabled drivers , delivery vehicles ambulances and so on.. but its alright in your eyes as cyclists are king and "a short slender sharp pointed metal pin with a raised helical thread running round it and a slotted head" anyone else eh ? Now we know your true colours Mr Chicken.
-
Careful HB Assumptions like that are a small step from blaming cyclists for the rise in transgender artists performing for kids, after all cyclists in their ultra tight macho lycra have made great strives in normalising men wearing womens clothing although some will argue that's down to glam rock in the 70s 🤔😉😅 However let's stick to the facts that removing bus lanes to make cycle highways makes no sense as those that can't cycle face even more restricted choices.
-
No mr.chicken The barriers were installed pre covid between the pavement and the road allowing buses to still use the bus lane. TfL moved them out a while ago to seal off the cycle lane from the road and in doing so removed the bus lane. That's the issue here, cyclists are now given priority over our mass transit devices, buses. How on earth does that make sense, even in your head?
-
Whilst not ED centric, let's look at how ridiculous the pro cycling lobby have got with their "everyone can cycle" mantra Waterloo Bridge where the bus and cycle lane which allowed buses to quickly traverse the bridge, has now been turned into a cycle only lane meaning buses regularly get stuck in traffic. To make it worse, the Aldwich one way system has been partially pedestrianised (the bit nearest the bridge) and the rest has become two ways. The net result is that buses are now taking upto ten minutes longer to get across the bridge and on to kingsway then before spewing out even more pollution as a result. Now tell me that isn't a direct effect of trying to make cyclists King of the road!

Jules-and-boo The current model for SNT's is less than it was ten years ago as focus was shifted to other areas of policing. There is a shift back towards local SNTs being boosted again but that depends on which areas are shouting (showing crime stats) the loudest and recruitment of new officers. Sadly the tasking our beat bobbies get stretches them thin and big events see them put on duties away from the area which effects our visibility of them. Most of the time they possibly walk down the same street as you but you may well miss them as there are so few bobbies on the beat. I bet, however, you see or hear the response cars more. As to how much reporting is required, obviously more than is occurring now, if the commander sees a spike of say 10 to 25% in an area of reported crime then they will respond but if its unreported crime they don't have the statistics to support more officers and they deploy extra resources where crime is being reported more. As said, don't accept crime, report it and get those resources focused on the area.
-
Are you (Generic) complicit of these crimes by just accepting they are happening or are you proactively reporting them? The police use crime report stats to assign resources to an area and unless we are all reporting them, no matter how small or trivial they feel, the police won't have visibility of them. By turning a blind eye and muttering "there's not enough police around", you are helping the criminals by not showing a demand for more officers. Be proactive, report crimes, attend SNT meetings to focus the ward priorities, raise grafitti issues with the council but for gawds sake don't just come on here and moan... if you've got the time to whinge on here, report it online to the police via https://www.met.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/

How do they (the authors of research papers) work our kms travelled Are they monitoring all cars, or doing surveys ? If surveys then are they asking a wide enough group to get a valid mean average as using a small group can skew results in either direction. To be honest, in my view the figures show a marginal decrease in kms travelled within ltns (0.6 of a km daily) , but a jump outside of between 0.4 and 0.6 of a km outside. It also shows an increase in traffic from pre ltn to post ltn in all areas and if you multiply the average daily change in kms by the volume of traffic you soon start to see why Rockets is correctly summarising that LTNs have increased traffic overall. What it also fails to show is traffic outside of the LTN boundaries (in our case on the south circular and Lordship Lane) by cleverly using the term near the ltn. Let's be honest, ltns aren't the answer, we need proper shared use of roads by all with better driving/cycling/walking by all because until we get there it's always going to be group x vs group y !

Interesting You can ask in advance for crime stats to be available and the more other residents who go, the less of a private club it becomes
