GP?s work 12 hour days, so working part time 3 days a week is the equivalent of a 9-5 job. I read recently that many have now reduced their hours to part time over 4 days, to then allow the 5th for paperwork, which they are doing unpaid.

The site can?t be that difficult given that Barcelona, despite being rubbish, was successful there for at least 15 years.

We had no problems finding soy milk in Crete last year, although we were staying in a pretty tiny town. In the past we have taken cartons of the long life Alpro (usually those individual cartons) in our luggage, as well as dairy free spread transferred into Tupperware. If I?d known about pre-ordering from Boots airside then I?d probably have done that. It saves worrying about the 100ml limit or leakage in your hold luggage.

Where to buy school shoes /boots for 6yo?
Gubodge replied to berbel's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Emmanuel Marshall on Dartmouth Road (the Kirkdale end). Dorothy used to stock Toughee shoes, which are amazing. They would still be looking good as new by the time my children had outgrown them. -

My worst UK restaurant meal by a long way was at a branch of the Real Greek. It's Peckham that gets all the interesting openings these days; it's just chains and more fast food for ED. Ah well, the walk back from SE15 helps the digestion.

Books for big sister to be (aged 2)
Gubodge replied to GillianHG's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My elder daughter was just under 2 when her little sister arrived and I'd second Mybaby's recommendation for 'There's a house inside my mummy.' She loved it, to the extent that I could recite the whole book to you now, 10 years on. -
Secondary school recommendations Peckham Rye
Gubodge replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'd agree. Knowing the last distance offered on Charter ED last year will give you absolutely no indication of whether you'd get in this year. Everyone applied as it was alongside the common application, but because it was such an unknown pretty much everyone treated it as a back-up. If they got KD/Charter1/Sydenham/Habs etc then they were unlikely to turn them down for Charter 2. This time people will really have to think about whether they prefer it to the others on offer, but they'll have a bit more to go on. There are likely to be far fewer applicants, but a much smaller last distance offered. To give some indication we were 1.4km away as the crow flies and 90 something on the list. During the summer we had a phone call offering us a place, but turned it down as we'd got our first choice on the common form. -
Very glad to hear it's mainly the same staff; I was worried they might all have been laid off. I can book our first visit now!

It hopefully won't affect her summer too much. My daughter has (twice) broken her right elbow (once on the first day of the summer hols) and once she was used to it it didn't slow her down much at all. If it's her left arm then I don't see why she shouldn't still play tennis and there are great waterproof cast covers that still allow swimming. We even had a 9 year old scaling a climbing wall with her arm in a cast at a birthday party.

Another happy customer here. After reading all the recommendations on here we contacted Saied to dig out and returf our lawn. He and his crew did a great job through the awful weather in the past few days and the lawn is looking fantastic. We'll definitely be calling on him again when we get started on our front garden.

Superkids is great. My two were very different swimmers; one a natural where it was all about perfecting technique and stamina, the other hated getting her face wet and had no confidence in the water at all. The teachers at Superkids were fantastic with both of them.

John Lewis leggings were the only ones that would stay up on my very slim daughter.

2nd vote for AVP. Mine love it; and they take childcare vouchers which is helpful.

The initial 'catchment' for Charter 2 is so small because everyone put it down. There was no reason not to, as it was separate from the standard admissions application so it was the perfect back up. Once everyone who has been offered Charter 1, Kingsdale or any other good known quantity has turned down their Charter 2 place the catchment will expand a lot. We're over 150 on the waiting list, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if we were ultimately offered a place.

Food allergy advice for kids parties, halloween, etc?
Gubodge replied to Saffron's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I don't think you can really second guess food allergies. It sounds like because of the size of the event, you're assuming some of the guests might have allergies but don't actually know. By all means get stuff in, and it's lovely that you're considering catering for allergies, but the likelihood is that you'll end up with a guest with the wrong combination for what you've bought. Fabulous baking boys stuff might be ok for someone with a nut allergy, but is no good for someone who can't eat dairy. I like some of the tesco's free from range, which suit my daughters allergies just fine, but are probably no good for someone who can't eat soya. I wouldn't expect my daughter to be catered for at a large function (or trust someone to) so would always take something along for her to eat, but what would be really thoughtful is that you keep the packets or list the ingredients for the food you're providing. An own brand Jaffa cake might be ok while a mcvities one isn't, so I need to be able to check. Also, keep things separate. She might be fine with a salted crisp, but not one that's shared a bowl with a cheese and onion one. -
No through route at Loughborough Junction
Gubodge replied to mikeb's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We received a penalty charge notice at the weekend after having unknowingly driven through the 'pedestrian' zone on 29th August. Amount to pay was zero. We haven't driven that way since but I pity anyone who regularly commutes that way. A warning period of three weeks doesn't count for much when the warnings take 4 weeks to come through. -
I was going to ask a similar question, Sleepy-li, but my daughter's strengths are gymnastics and swimming. Her Hand eye co-ordination is rubbish! I'm not really sure how they'd assess those, particularly swimming as they have no pool. Does anyone have any experience of applying for a sports scholarship for similar specialisms?
