  1. Superkids Swimschool is fantastic. Small classes, great teachers, endless patience. We go to the classes at Dulwich Prep, but there are several other locations. http://www.superkidsswimmingschool.co.uk/
  2. I'm with Redjam and Soulking. Even if Charter 1 and the new school's catchments overlapped completely, it would still mean a doubling of size in the catchment, would still offer more choice to a significant number of ED families, and would still take the pressure off other local schools. As a Goodrich parent, Habs, with it's proposed easterly nodal points, would have suited me better. But I'm not so blinkered as to think that by virtue of an SE22 postcode, my children are more deserving of a place at a local school than a child living in Camberwell.
  3. I left DMC a couple of years ago, the final straw being when I was unable to even book a telephone appointment less than 2 weeks ahead. I joined the Gardens, where I have had no problems at all in making appointments, whether urgent or routine. Some time after I joined, presumably as a result of the influx of similarly disgruntled DMC evacuees, the Gardens reduced the size of their catchment area for new patients. That is how a surgery should work, with the case load being kept at sustainable levels to ensure a certain quality of customer service, not to mention patient safety. It may be that all London surgeries are facing "the same systemic pressures", but some are managing them in a way that does not compromise patient care; nor overload other services such as A&E and Seldoc. As DMC seem unable or unwilling to prioritise patients over profit, lets hope CQC come visiting soon.
  4. If you haven't already report this then please do. In the past few weeks there have been several break-ins on Crebor and Dunstans. It may not be the same lot, but the more information the police have the more likely the little scrotes have of being caught.

On one side there is plenty of evidence; on the other there is disproved studies and anecdata.
  6. They've had to drop their price a bit. It was on at ?350k eighteen months ago: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1171917,1177930#msg-1177930
  7. That's great, thanks. I'll get a lot more work done now! And have seen some nice possible replacements...
  8. I am glued to gum tree, and have attached a photo of the bike in case anyone is offered it. But I mainly just came to post my thanks. Thank you to the man who gave chase. Thank you to the woman who tried to knock them off and who hung around in an increasingly dark and chilly park to give a statement to the police. Thank you to the woman in the cafe who gave me a free coffee while I waited for the police to arrive. Thanks to the police who turned up very speedily, considering it was only a bike theft and I'd only rung 101. Thank you to the friend who looked after my daughter when I realised I wouldn't be home in time to meet her. And thank you to the other friend who offered to lend me his bike. When something shitty happens it's nice to know that the good guys still significantly outnumber the bad.
  9. Despite the best efforts of onlookers my bike was stolen from outside the cafe in the park, just over an hour ago. If anyone happens to see a ladies canondale synapse, with pannier rack, toe clips and bottle cage, being ridden by a teenage boy, could they please PM me.
  10. Unfortunately Lee Oasis have now closed their furniture project.
  11. Great news! I realised last night that my daughter's outgrown her school shoes and wondered what I'd do without you.
  12. Oh dear, James, maybe I ought to rethink my usual route! I think the difference is probably that at Goodrich there is often no way you can see anything at all, so people do avoid it. At Heber, you can see down the road a bit, but have to be very careful to look out for cars racing up the inside of vehicles turning right into Townley. I can see how accidents could easily happen to anyone who's not prepared for the stupid speeds some drivers come around that bend.
  13. I assume many people do the same as me and drop down to join LL at Heber instead, where the curve of the road makes visibility much better.
  14. It's a lovely tree to pass, but I've always thought it wouldn't be much fun to live with and must make the front of the house very dark. The rootball almost certainly extends under the pavement and possibly the house as well, so moving it successfully could mean significant damage to both and not really a practical option. Goodrich children will miss it; when I've walked down to the swimming pool with different classes they've all held their breath when passing the monkey puzzle. I don't know when the tradition started, but the tree being down will make that part of the trip to swimming much more straightforward in future years.
  15. I agree with Ludo that the Peckham Market aquarium store should be avoided. We bought a fish from there that died within less than 48 hours.
  16. Cowling and Wilcox, behind the post office in Camberwell.
  17. Excellent news! Thanks for checking.
  18. The musicians' union sets minimum rates depending on what grade is being taught, but as I'm not a member I'm afraid I can't access the figures. Around this area, for the lower grades, you should probably be paying around ?45 p/h. If it's much more than that then yes, you probably are being taken for a ride. And from enquiries I made, it's usually cheaper if they are coming to teach in your home.
  19. What a shame. I've always found them very helpful (although not overly chatty, but that's just the way I like it). I far prefer it to Plough Homestores.
  20. Yes, they have a hall with toilets and kitchen facilities. My daughter has loved going to parties there.
  21. I've been impressed by the drama classes offered by Jasspa at JAGs on a Saturday morning. Plenty of boys, no jazz hands at all. They seem to do lots of games that work on characterisation so yes, plenty of silly voices and faces. I'd say they are teaching the children to act rather than teaching them to perform.
  22. Harris Girls and JAGs both hire out their sports halls for bouncy castle birthday parties.
  23. Having just been visiting secondary schools in the area, I think anyone in the area who is struggling and scrimping to educate their children privately is, tbh, a bit foolish. We have some fantastic state schools in this area. Hilly Fields, Kingsdale, Charter, Harris, Sydenham School. Leave private to the bankers and oligarchs, send your kids to the local schools and use the money you've saved to enrich them through music, art, sport or travel.
  24. I had a similar but not so serious incident when a car reversed into the front of my house. The house was still habitable and it happened during the day when there were plenty of witnesses, some of whom got the number plate and others who identified him as a workman working near by. The police were great though; they interviewed the neighbours who'd seen it happen and the guy was eventually found guilty of leaving the scene of an accident. The insurance did take a while to sort out, but everything was eventually put right. I do hope you can get a similar positive resolution; but yes, in the meantime go back to the police and chase them up. And your insurers should provide you with alternative accommodation until they've sorted out the repairs.
