There's a Mary Portas Living and Giving shop On Westbourne Grove in Notting Hill, sitting side by side with high end designer boutiques. The stock is fantastic and as well as having items donated by locals there are lots of new and sample items from various of Marys contacts in the Fashion industry. I often make a trip there to shop. Its unlike any existing Charity shop on Lordship lane and will be an asset to the area. Thank god it isn't another estate agent or Hairdressers.

Yes...Point taken but the quote refers to EIGHT years ago....that is my point and I don't understand why people are so incensed when its clear the quote was pertaining to when the butchers moved into the area.

Agree with the above post. And amazed that someone would be so small minded as to suggest petitioning against the opening of a new charity shop-The same poster probably wants a Jack Wills and a Starbucks opening on LL.

The reason Give and Take is more expensive than other charity shops is because they are more selective with their donated stock. it hurts me when I see people being negative about this particular shop. I chose to donate my used designer clothes there as they are specifically aimed at donating to breast cancer charities. As someone who has been directly affected by the disease I really value any contribution to helping find a cure for a disease that effects so many women-and men.

I'm sorry, but I honestly don't understand why everyone is so het up about a comment someone made regarding the area being a bit rough EIGHT years ago. So what? I hate to spoil everyones delusions but my impressions of the area around that time was that it was a bit sketchy in parts-I was living in West London then and had friends in ED...Funnily enough they sold up about two years ago and moved to Dalston...now that IS sketchy. Surely what matters is the here and now and wether you actually like the area and enjoy living here. NOT others perceptions.

I travel from Forest Hill to shop at that greengrocers. The juices are amazing and reasonably priced too, and the staff really nice and helpful. I'd be gutted if they closed...unless of course they relocated to Forest Hill-where we have no greengrocer and have to rely on Sainsbury for our fruit and veg-unless we go to the excellent farmers market which I believe ends on the 21st December.

It took me two hours from leaving work at Bond Street to get home to Forest Hill, I was completely stranded. Nightmare and not what I needed after a day of work.

I am happy to wear second hand fur, HOWEVER even if I could afford it i'd never buy a new fur coat. And likewise I abhor those new rabbit fur gilet things they sell in the markets-they come from China and I'm always thinking it may well be cat.

And not every council estate attracts social problems. I abhor it when people assume the worst of residents who happen to live in council owned property. -
Can anyone recommend a local gym (i.e.: SE21/22/23) that has cardio machines and classes as well as a nice clean pool. I'd join Esph but theres no pool sadly.

Very sad-I hope the owners read this, because its always been my fave shop for treats, and I always send my other half there to get me gifts... I think the young man you mention was lurking around as well today. There used to be such amazing knowledgable staff in there that inspired me and my OH to purchase. I am gutted this appears to no longer be the case.

Today whilst shopping on LL I was reminded that a large part of good service is reading the customer and assessing the right kind of service for them. Today for the first time in ages I went into Roullier White and left without buying a perfume (previously I have always gone in to browse and left having purchased a fragrance or a candle). The reason for this was the over keen sales girl behind the counter (one I've not seen there before). Who sort of bombarded us with perfumes, even though I told her I was happy to look alone because I knew what I liked. And in the end I became so confused and overwhelmed that I left with loads of cards with spray on and none I particularly felt inclined to buy. the difference between this experience and others in the shop is that the previous assistants all asked me what I liked first, and if I said I'm just looking but I like floral scents they then in a very laid back and knowledgeable manner suggested new scents I may like which invariably lead to me leaving the shop having spent ?100! The new girl was lovely, and tried to help but in a way which made me feel pressured. Its all about balance

I agree with Zebedee Tring-This is actually becoming tedious, and has gone WAY off the topic of the new restaurant. I'm not a vegetarian but I still find it a bit childish winding up those who are. I agree that 20% of the menu given to a vegetarian option sounds fair, but when the reality is only one dish it really is a bit lame, I think two options would be fairer. I also really feel there is a need for an Ottolenghi style restaurant to open in the area, somewhere producing lovely fresh tapas style dishes, with perhaps one or two meat and fish options.

On the Vegge front there is a vegetarian restaurant just off of Lordship Lane, (Blue Brick Cafe?) However I don't believe its open in the evening. I am not a wealthy person, (retail wages aren't the best) BUT I do wish people would stop grumbling about the prices of the dishes on offer. Lets face it-we can either afford to eat there or we can't, They are not opening a cafe but a destination restaurant with carefully sourced ingredients. Surely we push the boat out a little once in a while for occasion meals? Also I'm sure if the takings suffer as a result of over optimistic pricing they will adjust things accordingly. I find it sad that a business has chosen to invest in opening in our community-not in destination Clapham, or Brixton and people just seem hell bent on bitching about it before its even trading. Its almost as if you want it to fail and end up as Nandos or some other commercial hideousness. Please give it a chance-I can't afford to eat there regularly by the sound of it but I don't have sour grapes as a result.

Well said penguin68! Also I rather suspect Otta wants to see a Jack Wills on LL.

And I strongly agree with davidh's post. just be grateful you have small independent retailers and not a high street full of dreadful chain stores with bland service.
-
I find the post slagging off the lady in Cherner books quite objectionable. I have also been served by her and found her helpful and friendly. I actually find the whole tone of the post pompous and arrogant, and frankly if someone came into my store with that arrogant superior attitude I think I too would be rude to them.
-
I think I know the place we may not name-We went there twice and such such bad service on both occasions that it was almost funny-like being in Fawlty Towers and served by Manuel.
-
I do agree about the service at east Dulwich Deli being atrocious-I once waited so long to be served with an overpriced loaf of bread and a sausage roll or something that I lost the will to live (there was one other person being served and two staff behind counter-one of them just gaffing around ignoring me) I haven't been back since

Oh! Also added to my list for superb service is Plough DIY/Hardware shop, the Picture framers in the same parade, The large shoe shop (John Barnett???) People love Colour paint shop. Callows locksmiths are wonderful, and Lordship lane carpets are helpful, honest and with knowlegable staff. All of the above have given us great advice and secured our customer loyalty. We live in Forest Hill and not in ED btw

I work in retail on a senior level in central London, and because of my job I must admit I am very critical of service that I receive in shops. I would agree that there is nothing worse than being followed round a shop by either a commission hungry or suspicious sales associate, however in a smaller boutique this is often due to pressure from owners or managers. Likewise I firmly believe that as a customer you get back what you give out,it costs nothing to nod a greeting to the person working in the shop. I too have witnessed real arrogance by some of the customers on LL who let their toddlers fiddle with products and block the shop with their oversized buggys completely oblivious to other customers in the shop. I agree with earlier comments about great service in Franklins and Moxons, and I would like to add Roullier White-where the staff are really knowledgable about their products, and also passionate-they get the perfect balance between letting you browse and offering advice. They are so good in fact that we rarely go in there and leave empty handed, usually walking out having spent quite a bit on a new fragrance we never went in intending to purchase! Also Cherner Books is superb-we rarely leave there without a great new read, inspired and advised by the great guy who owns the place. I would also like to remind people that most shop assistants are on low or minimum wage. the hours can be long, and sometimes boring and in smaller shops working conditions are not always the best. There, I've said my piece!

We regularly eat at Luca's and I must say we have never EVER had a problem with the service. even on a crowded noisy weekend the waiting staff are always smiley and efficient.

When the Hurricane hit East Dulwich
NewWave replied to Muttley's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
In the storm of '87 I was living noth of the river in Chelsea, and I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit I slept through it. But I woke up the next morning to discover a tree had just missed crashing through my bedroom window, and was at such a weird angle it had to be chopped down. And the street ouside was a sea of fallen branches-that evening I went to see Bob Dylan at Wembley and was deeply dissapointed that he didn't sing Hurracaine -
