  1. We had this problem a couple of years ago when we installed a wooden floor. They would come up through the little gap between the flooring and the skirting. We put salt along the skirting board every night and they didn't come back. Last night, however, we had two trying to slither through the gap under our back door. The rain seems to bring them out. I have a constant battle with them at my allotment but the organic pellets I use are quite effective. Squelched one between my fingers once when weeding which still makes me shudder when I think about it.
  2. My neighbour had one installed and constantly had problems with the sensors falling off which are attached with Velcro. Don't know whether Velcro is standard fixing or just specific to their particular system. With many difficulties over the years they have now discontinued using it.
  3. But surely they can build climbing apparatus that is within EU regulations like they do everywhere else? I particularly like the wooden structures that are a bit different from the run-of-the-mill metal playground frames that you often find out in woodland areas in the country. Kids need a challenge not just a swing. Agree about the compensation culture but shouldn't it come down to "you ride at your own risk" at some point? As long as consideration has been given to making a structure as safe as it can be and within regulations. Anyway, why has it taken them so long to reach this decision? The reopening of the adventure playground has been imminent for ages.
  4. Such a shame. The skate park is brilliant and my older boys would have loved it when they were younger but my girls are not really into it. The adventure playground would have been perfect for them.
  5. Health and Safety gone mad, as usual. How did you find out they are not planning to put anything else in there? So disappointing as the park badly needs something to cater for the older kids.
  6. Saw them working on other structures a while ago while my girls were swinging on the rope. What on earth were they building that is deemed to be too dangerous? The adjacent skate park is potentially more dangerous than an adventure playground surely?
  7. Definately persevere with appeal if you feel you have a strong case. Southwark tried to scare me off by increasing the fine to ?180 and then offered me a last chance to pay ?120 one week before arbitration. I declined their kind offer and they decided not to fight the case three days before the hearing date.

It was in the Southwark News (Tuesday 7th May) on the opposite page to the Dulwich Swine Flu article in the Dulwich and West Norwood edition but no mention of it in the online edition. Woman of 27 (or 28) was slashed with a knife and her bag and mobile were taken. Attacked from behind as she was walking along Melbourne Grove. Her attacker apparently ran up Dog Kennel Hill following the attack. From what I can remember the article said the attacker was male, black and approx 30 years of age and I think about 6' tall. One of the bar staff from The Vine was interviewed and stated that he had seen the police cars and ambulances when he finished his shift. She is recovering in Kings College Hospital.
  9. I am also on Vodafone and lose connection from time to time. I have found that turning the phone upside down reconnects to the network. Try it next time to see if it works for you. Don't know why or how but it works! Edited to say that this advice came from my teenage son and they know everything about mobiles I guess!

My daughter was one of their victims. All I can say to the folk on this forum who find mugging amusing, "Wait until it happens to one of your family/close friends". Everyone likes a good laugh but some of the responses on this forum are shameful. Both of my older teenage boys have also been attacked two or three times whilst out and about in the area over the last five years but fortunately not seriously hurt. My nephew was so badly beaten up walking back from Sainsburys a few years ago that he was hospitalised. It really isn't a laughing matter.
  11. I find it infuriating when you are waiting patiently for a space in a car park while the occupant of the space unloads their shopping and returns their trolley. Just as they drive out and you prepare to reverse in, someone else comes along and drives straight in, completely ignoring the fact that you are parked up and indicating. Feel its not worth challenging them and avoid the confrontation but did stick up for someone who was preparing to reverse into the space I was vacating when someone did it to them. Between us we managed to shame them into moving on. Edited for typo
  12. When you hold the door for someone and they walk straight through without thanking you and then a whole stream of people following behind do the same like you are invisible. You try to let the door go but nobody attempts to hold it. Then you get a dirty look from someone who thinks you are rude for letting the door go in their face. Grrrr Edited to say "mild irritation" rather than "irrational rage"
  13. We did it too. Teenagers were grumbling but the younger ones found it very exciting with all the candles glowing. Made us think about how much electricity we normally use when we started turning everything back on again. Doubt the hour makes much difference but certainly raises awareness.
  14. Saw a little lad picking a great big bunch today as I drove past. Amazed that parents allow their children to pick flowers in a park.
  15. What an uplifting thread. Great start to the week.

  17. We have been fortunate not to have any holes in clothes but our carpets are getting very thread bare from the larvae munching their way through them. Getting rid of the carpets and replacing with wooden floors in all rooms now as we don't notice them in the rooms where we don't have carpets This is our third year with them. We've used the pheromone traps to catch the males from the beginning. This reduces the number of moths we see but doesn't completely eradicate them and the carpets are still disappearing
