  1. According to the Beeb it's partly debris from forest fires in Spain and Portugal. The light reminded me of sitting on the beach in the South of France years ago, with the sky orange and Smokey from forest fires, watching the planes fly down to the sea to suck up water to fight them with.
  2. I think we've all known this has been going on for years, despite their use of the future tense. In my view it has some bearing on the decision to close so many smaller police stations and (whatever they might say to the contrary) reduce the visible presence on the street. Why would you need either of those if you're not interested in dealing with smaller crimes?
  3. Just saw a helicopter flying over ED with its lights on, bright as a dragonfly against the sky - rather beautiful.
  4. Think so - see famous people in Sainsbury's thread for sightings.

  6. Still dark but not as yellow now. Looks like the clocks went back yesterday and you didn't realise.
  7. I'm watching the light outside the window turning dark greyish-yellow. Are there Death Eaters on the way? Is anyone's dark mark tingling?
  8. Apparently the flu jab is only ?5 at Asda.
  9. Thanks for that info. 65% humidity sounds quite high but it can go up quickly when you have more people in the house.
  10. Would it all work better for passengers if it was renationalised?
  11. ...which in turn reminded me of the matchless Tim's faces. http://timsfaces.tumblr.com/
  12. Found this while googling their CEO's name and email address. What's astonishing is that was four years ago, the guy published a book on the back of it and yet they're STILL no better. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2408574/Dominic-Utton-contacted-Great-Western-trains-boss-time-delayed-98-letters.html
  13. Hereabouts we tend to be preoccupied with Southern and the last four-plus years of London Bridge, but a while back I had to use GWR a couple of times and it has been a nightmare - massive delay to the journey, hopeless communication and a refund process that has taken over 90 days and counting. All contacts with them just lead to being fobbed off as far as I can see, and although they ask for feedback after they respond they certainly don't appear to act on it. I'm seething. Not sure whether they're cynical, incompetent or about to collapse. Anyone else know how to get them to take any action?

Could be what I need but I'm not sure about running costs and also noise, as they're not all silent it seems.
  15. It does sometimes seem like we've forgotten that cold is nature's way of telling you to put more clothes on. The shops don't help as there's not much decent woollen clothing for women on the high street these days. If you want some nice wool socks I can recommend the sock class at Sharp Works in Herne Hill. They make good Christmas presents too.
  16. I've been putting it on reluctantly for the last month but only because the washing wouldn't dry otherwise. If it wasn't for that my usual test is put on a jumper, have a cup of tea and hoover the place - if you're still cold after that, you can put the heating on!
  17. Not sure the OP was offering that as a complete description, but in any case when you're the victim of a crime, particularly a violent one, it can be surprisingly hard to remember anything but the most obvious things about the aggressor. I believe the OP is also not a native English speaker so in what must have been a very stressful situation they might not be able to think of another way to say what they wanted to. Please don't turn the perpetrator into the victim here.
  18. Perhaps for the Lost & Found section? You can also report abandoned bikes and bike parts to Southwark Council here: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/street-care/abandoned-cycles
  19. Interesting idea - moving Parliament to zone 3 would certainly take some of the glamour off the job.
  20. Birmingham's lovely! Seriously, I'd move there if the right job came up. The grimmest place I ever worked was Windermere, surprisingly. I can still remember the feeling of despair. Send them there.
  21. Lead item in local Conservative 'newsletter' that came through my door today re quietway works at DV: 'Months of disruption ahead'. That's ONE MONTH after work actually started and nearly TWO after works schedules first came through the door, apparently before the decision had actually been ratified. Apart from criticising Sadiq Khan, it seems the local Conservative councillors have done very little. It's called 'InTouch', the newsletter. Ironically.
  22. As others have said, he would not be expected to make any payments to his ex-partner for herself, but if the children are still at school and the new partner hasn't actually adopted them, you'd expect him to have (and, hopefully, want) to contribute to their upkeep, wouldn't you?
