  2. A bottle of orange squash in case anyone orders a gin and orange. A small section at the end of the bar for off-sales.
  3. On the bar, a charity collecting tin for those beer-induced sentimental moments. Behind the bar a picture of the Queen. Also a wall calendar, but not this year's.
  4. A saloon bar on one side (ETA: or do I mean public? It's all getting a bit hazy) and a lounge bar on the other. No comfy sofas or armchairs in either. In the (unheated) ladies' loo, a green stain below the cold tap, the only one that works.
  5. I wondered if anyone knows of a shopping outlet village that's not too far from here using public transport? I've managed Hatfield (Gap jeans ?13, bargain) and I'm working myself up for the one at Wembley, but maybe there's something closer?
  6. A sticky carpet, like at the Peckhamplex. A smog of fag smoke. It was only when smoking was banned that you realised what a multitude of sins it was masking. ETA: and no cappuccino machine.
  7. But through the magic of the internet you can both continue to post on the EDF as though nothing has happened, like so many others. Virtual reality, folks. Hope the moves go smoothly.
  8. Kind of Hope & Greenwood for grown-ups? That could actually work in an area like this.
  9. Cheap tickets, but ask the price before you buy a drink - ?2.80 for a cup of tea, 50% more than Costa!
  10. She sounds great. I'm sure she'll help a few kids see another viewpoint, which is one of the hallmarks of a great teacher, surely. Writing for the DM seems to be all about what they can imply by including irrelevant stuff in parantheses, such as '?400,000 flat', which I guess is there to allow DM readers to mutter 'champagne socialist' dismissively over their elevenses.
  11. > & I don't know why OP expects free service > elsewhere?? > Everyone else who walks in with a damaged heel is > going to have to pay. Why are you the exception? > :S If you disagree with what the OP said, why not argue with that rather than exaggerating it into something she didn't say? It's not particularly demanding to expect the heel to last.
  12. It can happen in shops too. A few years ago I was standing in John Lewis, in front of a mirror in that absorbed state you go into when you try on clothes. I looked down to see a woman leaning down and reaching out her hand to my bag on the floor right in front of me. She pulled back her hand, muttered something and left. I was so shocked she managed to disappear before I could do anything. She looked like a typical shopper and I'd never have suspected her had I not seen her in the act. It wasn't as though I'd put the bag down and walked away; it was literally so close I could have stamped on her hand. I almost wished I had.
  13. Actually failed or you think it's failing? They tweeted their Christmas menu only yesterday and there were people in there when I passed earlier.
  14. It may cut out if it overheats because of a blockage or if the filter needs cleaning (my cylinder model does this). Does it feel hot to you? If so, check for blockages, let it cool down completely and then try again. There are also videos on Youtube which might help. If all else fails, read the manual...
  15. Have to say I tried Merrifields a couple of times and copped a load of attitude so haven't been back, but maybe, as you say, I caught whoever it was on bad days. Love Timpson's, though. Not only is the customer service usually excellent, they employ ex-convicts to help them get back into normal society, which adds a pleasant frisson while I wait. http://www.timpson.co.uk/blog/article/79/john-timpson-we-are-making-a-difference-to-the-lives-of-ex-offenders-
  16. Could mean four boys. If you were expecting, that would completely freak you out.
  17. Is Cotswold Life an oxymoron?
  18. They're great like that. Very sensible as it makes you want to go back.
  19. Not surprised you're annoyed. He's a bit short on the spirit of customer service; not sure how they keep going as it can't be good for repeat business. Next time, there's a Timpson's at Sainsbury's two minutes further on and they're generally good like that.
  20. What's wrong with that? Doesn't that show the system works and they're not screening out the bad ratings?
  21. Something similar happened to me in the one near the library when I had a parcel that the guy told me would cost I think about ?7 to send. I had to ask a couple of times if that was definitely the cheapest before he remembered the parcel rates, but since then I've been served by someone else who gave me alternatives that were lower than that. Maybe they're under pressure to sell the more expensive options?
  22. I hate it when drivers hoot at me just to get out of their way. The self-importance is unbelievable. Two particularly dangerous things I experience regularly are drivers overtaking and immediately either turning left or braking as I'm cycling downhill, for example down CPR, and drivers doing unexpected three-point turns on quieter roads. Drivers, please remember that you may have power-assisted steering but cycles don't, and in wet weather we need additional stopping distance too. It's also worth remembering that the fact you live in a street doesn't obviate the need to indicate and use your mirrors.
  23. I'm in the village, but as that's what ED is E of I think it still counts. There is nothing like this for the village itself, perhaps as we're stuck in the middle of the last century.
