  1. Lots on Breakfast Show BBC london this morning about this. 7.20 am and 8.10am for those wishing to listen again when it's available. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio/bbc_london/?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/london_aod.shtml?london/breakfast
  2. Work seems to be necessary if you don't have the gas meter outside. They had troulble with a property ( large house divided into flats ) in middle of Barry Rd. Were working until 10 .30 pm to sort it ,they had worked until 10 night before. Think they do very best they can not to leave you without gas. Steve T 's horrific experience surely an exception... They did send a letter notifying of work and it had a number to call for more info - I gave mine to my neighbour who hadn't kept his ( it did look like a circular ) ,so afraid can't quote nos to phone.
  3. Well ,for what it's worth ( nothing I expect ! ) yesterday I received 2 packages ,both posted within last 7 days. Still waiting for stuff posted on 23rd Nov.
  4. How about we all PM TJMP as Jamma has done ? Maybe the volume of queries will produce some action .
  5. I'm also waiting for an item sent first class on 23 Nov. Perhaps we can try and guess eachothers identity in the queue at Silvester Rd - I'll wear a stetson.
  6. There's a couple of comments on this thread http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?29,377322 about Ofsted and data.
  7. Right - funding for primary school places. I do wonder what impact this current bulge is going to have on demand for secondary school places in 7 years time .
  8. Is this money only for primary schools ?
  9. It does look good ,but I can't quite see what you get. Wonder what the surf the web page is like ?
  10. Quids ,the January start doesn't always offer a solution for summer born/" young " school starters. And it doesn't get round the issue that those who may need it most are often taught in bigger groups than the September starters and have 5 months less of an introduction to primary school. Your experience - nice big group all starting together does sound an improvement on mine. I'm sure for most people things will be fine and I don't want to scaremonger . But, if I had had more support ,benefit of hindsight etc ,like sillywoman I'd have tried harder to find a way round it for my son. Whether that's campainging to allow summer born/premature etc to start Reception in September a year later , for schools to change how they deal with the January intake by arranging a dedicated class exclusively for that group ,or finding some other soloution - who knows what ? keep at nursery and coach at home ? and start in year 1 when there will be no places left ? Personally ,if I'd known then what I know now I'd at least have been more aware - would have treated child, teachers and school differently and not as though as it was all a failing on his part . People can be very unhelpful - schools ,teachers ,friends ,general public - with this line of " Oh it was ok for my Jonny ,all this talk of summer born being at a disadvantage is just a lot of fuss ." I think it's better to take it on board and try and compensate for it.
  11. oooh - looks good, particularly visibilty . But what do the experts think?
  12. I'm afraid that some children - lots of them boys - can struggle and loose confidence even in reception and play based environments. It's not about them being in a " gang " or being behind academically - it's about lacking social skills , poor fine motor skills that makes managing clothes , wiping their nose /bottom ,playing with lego/painting difficult etc,etc It's about that child being aware that they're struggling and other kids are flying. ( That's the " behind " bit that you weren't sure about .) Children that age lack coping skills ,they quickly become turned off ,some even become disruptive. Good teachers help - but not all have the experience and time. And just because people can quote examples of children not being disadavantaged it doesn't make the other examples where children have suffered, have had their self esteem and confidence badly dented ,disappear.
  13. Found cream cashmere/silk pashmina in road outside Somerfield/Co op in Lordship Lane this morning. Now tied to railings between Indian Restaurant and Somerfield.
  14. If only it were that simple ! Glad your experience was good though.
  15. anna - main bus routes seem ok - ie 436,36 ,those that run from New Cross through to Camberwell Green. Not that the poor people in Sumner Rd will care about bus routes ,I know.
  16. If they were " cominig out of the school gates " then I assume that this was at the end of a school day. The pavements around both Dulwich Village school sites and the Hamlet are always packed at this time. Often with mums with babies in pushchairs ,toddlers in tow . Madness ,and I think very inconsiderate, to be trying to cycle through the throng. Really not the best time and place to be giving your little one cycling practice. Just my view - as a cyclist.
  17. Large fire on building site Peckham . http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8380002.stm Commercial Rd shut .BBC London say affecting traffic " Camberwell to Bermondsey "
  18. One thing which i think helps and was done - maybe still is - at Dulwich Village Infants was to have a whole class of January intake ,so that they're all new together. The classes - 2 September intake and the one January intake were mixed up ,in year 1 I think . Of course this also causes debate with friendships formed in reception being disrupted by children being placed in different classes .
  19. My son is late July birth . Couldn't get into school nursery because places offered to older kids so went to preschool. Joined school in January knowing no one and completely agree with PGC - very hard for Jan intake to join a half class that's benefitted from being a small group with more teacher and TA input. Friendships already formed. January children have to fit into a group that already knows routines etc. Didn't find school very helpful in briefing parents either - got the impression they'd been through everything once at the shiny start of term and were lacking motivation to go through it all again in the cold post Christmas days . Talking about things like book bags ,changing reading books ,class assemblies ,library visits ,bringing fruit in etc, etc. Would say son definitely suffered socially ,emotionally and confidence wise and has yet ,many years later ,to catch up. Think it's more about confidence than what is actually taught /learnt ,which theoretically could be covered at home . Think boys are younger emotionally than girls and that it does affect them. Though obviously everyone is different and I'm making generalisations based on own experience.
  20. How awful ,good for you to be interested to try and help. Agree HV good idea.# Maybe change title of your thread to something like " What to do if suspect neighbour mistreating child ? " Then maybe more people could offer advice ?
  21. This thread is helpful and has advice on bottles/teats. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?29,315026,315292#msg-315292
  22. Thanks BARA - good for people to be advised of this . Would you know if it's possible to be on a mailing list re agendas for Community Councils ? Does Southwark publicise agenda items of common interest ( improvements to Rye Lane ) ? Peckham library had no notices ,does one have to look on line somewhere ? Sorry if this seems dense and apologies if you're not right person to ask.
