  1. Not all schools have huge coaches parked up long before end of school day and completely blocking the road to the extent that it's hard to even ride a bicycle in between them.
  2. Info on school to be built on this site at - http://www.harrisdulwichboys.org.uk/. Temp accomodation at Langbourne - up near Kingsdale, towards Crystal Palace. Lord Harris will have his way and squeeze 950 + students ( plus staff ) onto a site so small that starting and finishing times of the school day must be staggered and parents asked to sign agreements indicating that they will not drop off or pick up their children . As for the building - whatever one's subjective view ,surely it's well understood that long narrow corridors of the type used here are anathema in schools. And what outside space is there for recreation /break time? More secondary places for boys are badly needed in this part of the borough ,but not crammed into such a small site like this.
  3. Miss Corkindale and Miss Wheeler - remember them well!
  4. Personally I think AlleynStudent comments about " little you can do about it " do smack of arrogance and the request to take matters up with senior management miss the point that much of the discussion has been on wider political issues. But presumably AS is under 18 and perhaps hasn't honed his webdebating skills to the high level exhibited by some on this forum. Give him/her a break - fair play for gettng involved ,I'd be thrilled if my teenage son took the time to join a similar debate. As for punctuation and grammar - I agree it's a cheap shot.
  5. shoshtosh " do we really care about fireworks? seriously? wow." It was the noise and disturbance of sleep to a large number of people plus the arrogance/lack of awareness on Alleyn's part in causing this . So yes I for one do care .Though the point Bawdy Nan makes has ,in my opinion ,wider reaching implications and is of greatewr importance.
  6. Freddy we must have been there at the same time . I remember Mrs Ward . Have been trying to recall her name ,so thank you. I remember how we were all entranced ,waiting to see which suit she would wear the next day. She seemed to have a never ending supply - all very similar but different colours. I also remember her being horrified that no one ( or maybe only 1 or 2 ) was applying for university and if it hadn't been for her I and several of my friends wouldn't have gone on to HE . Mrs. Wilkie taught German, think she must have had heart problems, her lips were always purple / blue. What was the name of the Domestic Science teacher ? And the Biology teacher ? I was fond of Miss Moody ( didn't she teach the wrong syallabus for RE one year ? )and Miss Stewart. Oh and Miss Kelly taught English. and there was one teacher who was engaged but her fiance became a monk .Bit of a conversation stopper she said. And Miss Gibbs barred me from taking Maths O level - waste of the entrance fee she said .
  7. Mrs Bridges and Ms Stuart and her matching diminutive partner Ms Moody . The kilts and the start rite fringed loafers ! Name of needlework teacher ? Yes ,fierce hardly comes close . I remember screams of " Get the quick unpick ! " and her hurling tins of pins across the room because they were brass and not steel. Was it Hutchinson ???
  8. Oh dear ,pass the zimmer frame - I left in 1969 !
  9. Current Waverley used to be Honor Oak Girls School ( 45 years ago ) and at that time Friern Girls School was on the site facing Peckham Rye and now being developed as another Harris Academy. Did the Upper Friern School replace the Honor Oak Girls Grammar? Guessing it did.
  10. I was also in bed and found it hugely disturbing - and I live in Barry Rd. A 93 year old lady I visit ( living not that close to the scene ) was also woken from one of her rare spells of sleep and then spent ages trying to relocate the arms of Morpheus . Personally I found it inconsiderate and annoying.I think the fact that it was so unexpected made it more disturbing ,I lay there trying to imagine what on earth was going on.
  11. Does anyone have any news about 185 route ? Or 36/436 from Camberwell to Victoria ?
  12. http://www.goodrich.southwark.sch.uk/
  13. BBC London says lots closed. Kids may be able to walk there ,but teachers may be unable to travel .
  14. There are no buses running in London today. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravelnews/realtime/buses/default.html
  15. I agree that there is a lesson to be learnt from this - and what an amazing story. Auracaught what a nightmare time for you ,do hope you've recovered. AuraCaught have you considered a letter to the letters page of the South London Press as a means of making contact with your " Good Samaritan "? Though if I were a reporter on the SLP I'd think it would make a good story.
  16. I think the reference library at the Plough, top of Barry Rd, might have this info.
  17. Presumably someone has seen the accused allowing his Springer to foul the pavement ....in which case I presume he's been asked to clear it up .Has he ?
  18. Re: Christmas Tree Recycling new Posted by: eater81 Yesterday, 11:24AM Don't know if they're doing it this year, but last year there was an Xmas tree shredding machine in the middle of Peckham Rye, near the cafe. They were shredding xmas trees free of charge.
  19. Takes me 20 mins to Pimlico ,so I'm sure 30 mins for your journey would do it. I'm definitely not fit but found it so much easier and qucker than the bus. Be encouraged ,I'm sure you'd love it. We need some clever person to suggest a route though . I always try and avoid the 185 route - Dog Kennel Hill,Camberwell Green ,and absolutely NOT Camberwell new Rd up to the Oval. Here's some of my efforts straight across at the end of Townley Rd up ( traffic free but bit spooky in the dark ) Greendales at the side of JAGS. Across Denmark Hill ,left and right ( not exact ) and down the first bit of Herne Hill Rd ( with the LIbrary )take a left and and a right ( again not exact ) and straight down Poplar Rd ( I think ) . Brings you out at Loughborough junction where you go straight across and keep going straight ,across major junction, then left and this brings you out near the Oval. On the way back ,just past Vauxhall I keep straight on down Kennington Lane ,past the TESCO'S ,turn right at lights across main road straight on and then turn left ,then right and you come to Kennington Park Rd which you can cross by turning right and tiny bit of pavement cycling and then across traffic lights down ( not sure of name ) road opposite and along side of park ,parllel to gahstly Camberwell New Rd . Go straight until you reach John Ruskin St where you turn right and then left down Bethwin Rd and straight across Camberwell Rd, thru Addington Square ,across main road ,and straight on down Edmund Rd ( bit scary in the dark as a bit deserted but only a short bit ) and then straight on down Benhill Rd which brings you out to main rd btwn Camberwell And Peckham ( Peckham Rd ) . I normally go straight across up Wilson Rd and left and right ( not accurate ) into Camberwell Grove.( which is not as steep as you might think ).
  20. Same here - go for the Norway Spruce not the non drop Nordman fir ,then you get the lovely smell.
  21. Tend to agree with you LP. But great to see another swapfest/ give and take day in Darrell Rd on the 24 Jan.
  22. tomdhu would you know whether there is any info available on affect of other works carried out by TW or other water authorities ? You say TW has previous... I've looked at New Scientist link, which looks pretty worrying ,especially the text where it seems that it's too easy for firms to distance themselves from claims that they've caused subsidence . Certainely it sounds really concerning,I guess this will also have implications re buildings insurance - good on you for bringing this to our attention. Is there somewhere that gives more info about the exact route of the tunnel - we're mid Barry Rd ( which is already affected by subsidence ,aggravated IMO by the bendy buses )and I'm wondering how close our address will be to the route.
  23. Sympathies . Whereabouts in East Dulwich is she ? My son was reporting signs of a giant cat in Silvester Rd .
  24. I take the safety point but ....I know for many elderly people ( who rely on buses ) that the speed bumps make their journey painful and also precarious if they've not managed to sit down before the bus pulls off.
