Helen Mirren went to my school. Few years before me though.

Wow, congratulations on your engagement, and in Rome too, how romantic!

Yawn. Haven't we had the debate on here before about how dull people who think they are witty because they point out misspellings really are? That's an insult by the way... opposite of compliment ;-) -

A complement is a complement where ever it comes from, I wouldn't knock it. It's not like you have to sleep with someone just because they complemented you. -

I think it was all the art deco sets and the amazing clothes - love the 20s and 30s. And evaporated milk with tinned fruit cocktail was a real treat for afters when I was a kid, mum had to make sure me and my sister both got a glace cherry or one of us would be unhappy

I've lived on Crystal Palace Road since last summer and I've never had any problems, though the recent posts on muggings etc have made me a bit nervous and more inclined to use taxis late at night rather than getting the night bus back from town. Suspect that's an overreaction on my part though.

I have to confess I quite like this look. Suits with Nike type trainers... no way. If a guy really wants to do suit with trainers, do darker coloured skate type ones or converse type ones ala David Tennant in Doctor Who, but white with dark suits looks so naff and nike trainers are for sports wear only, look crap with jeans too. I can sympathize with people wanting a comfortsble option, but I couldn't do gym trainers with a skirt. I do ballet pumps instead of heels a lot of the time - keep some heels at work. I have been known to wear converse trainers with linen trousers too but think they can look ok if its the right colour.

I'm not sure I do "fashion" as such, but my favourite clothing weaknesses would have to be shoes from Hobbs. I can still recall being a broke student living in Bath, looking longingly in the window of the local branch, promising myself I would shop there when I had enough money, before stomping off in my 8 hole Doc Martins (lasted forever but not exactly pretty). These days I get most of my work suits there too - they do some nice feminine styles - smart but not too masculine looking and shaped for women that have curves. I think of Fred Perry being more of a mod look than a gay look - fans of Paul Weller etc often seem to go for Fred Perry.

My choices would be John Cusack, Jack Davenport, Ben Chaplin, Dermot Mulroney & David Tennant. Not all at the same time mind you, that would be greedy.

The sight of the first spring bulbs coming up The view along the river when coming home after dark from the north side of town - love all the lights Seeing places I recognize when flying over (probably shouldn't admit to that now it's so unpolitically correct to fly...) Hearing one of my favourite songs on the radio (just happening right now :-) Blossom on trees (even though it gives me rampant hay fever) Sunshine The first sip of a really good cup of black coffee (i.e. not Starbucks etc... independant cafes serving Illy seem to hit the spot most often) The taste of the first cherries of summer

Hmmm, I'll agree on the make up point, and probably on the waxing (unless we are talking seriously furry backs, in which case I could understand a guy considering it) But I wouldn't object to a guy wearing moisturiser. Though it would probably be in a grey tube and called something like "face protector" or "after shave balm" rather than moisturiser if it was one aimed at guys.

Depends how wild they would be left natural, but there's nothing sexy about a mono-brow.

I wasn't suggesting long term renting makes sense compared to buying - clearly it doesn't. I wouldn't even suggest to people trying to sell out of a market at the peak and renting till it drops - quite apart from anything else hard to call the peak. But, if you happen to have sold out for another reason like me (moving to a new city & changing jobs, not wanting to buy till sure job ok and know which part of city to settle in) or looking to buy for first time, then I think renting for a bit longer than planned when market is falling is a logical step to take. I would be kicking myself if I had bought in summer/autumn 2007 when I had planned to buy - would have lost half my capital by now. And sure, I know it only really matters if I crystalise the loss by selling up, but I do like the idea of deferring purchase and getting my mortgage payments down through having saved a larger deposit and buying somewhere on a similar scale to what I planned to get at a lesser price. -

Sorry, but personally I don't find this very helpful. Do you have evidence they never meant to stab anyone? If they weren't prepared to do any physical harm to anyone they wouldn't have been carrying a knife in the first place. I wouldn't have thought carrying a knife is exactly common among the law abiding of us. Frankly whilst it scares me, I would rather be warned someone round here is willing to use extreme force to steal my bag, and the original thread title did that rather better.

Renting isn't necessarily throwing money down the drain. I'm renting somewhere that is more modest than I would want to buy and as such the rent is probably about what I expect to end up paying in interest on my mortgage when I get back into the market as a buyer so I don't feel like I am wasting money. What I would spend on capital repayments goes in my savings account instead. I know people have got into the housing market because they don't want to throw more money away on rent, but actually taken out a 100%+ mortgage near the top of the market and only paid the interest on it, so they don't own the place they live in anymore than I own this one. In fact, they have debt that started out exceeding the value of their property and now exceeds by a long margin. I agree it's right to think of it as a home and not get too obsessed with ups and downs of the market, but to argue it's good to do to stop throwing money down the drain on rent is only valid if you are paying off the capital faster than the value is going down, which might be challenging in this market. -

Mr Blobby, The Chicken Song, Grandma we love you, Barbie Girl, anything by the Cheeky Girls... you know the kind of thing. Lots of the songs people have listed it's more about a matter of personal taste than total lack of talent. Which is not to say you can't detest things because it's not your taste, but there are some much much worse things out there that I could list than most of the things people have named. My pet hate would be bad covers... if the original is good, leave it alone unless you really have something to add (and most people don't). (Come to that if it is bad, why cover it?) Covering Beatles songs is generally a bad plan - I can remember my sister liking a particularly dire cover of Strawberry Fields by Candy Flip, who I've (thankfully) never heard of again. Oh, and Madonna's version of American Pie was indigestible rubbish too.

So how would you suggest you police a system that allows a bit of touting but not enough to create a shortage to create a hefty premium?

ISAs aren't in very limited supply - your buying one doesn't stop other people from taking one out. Tickets are in limited supply, people buying them and selling on for more than face value deprives people who wanted to go but could only afford to pay face value of the chance to go. I am quite happy for people to sell on tickets they bought with every intention of using them who then have to sell them on because someone couldn't make it for what ever reason. But deliberately buying up tickets with the sole purpose of selling them on for a profit does irritate me. These days it seems loads of gigs you have to try to book on the day the tickets go on sale to have a chance of going - which is a right pain if you are at work when they go on sale as I usually am.
