  1. LOL, *Bob* - I thought the same!
  2. Huguenot, apologies if I have misconstrued Vince's point about ED being 'better' than Peckham and Brixton..and all the connotations that the adjective 'better' implies in this context. of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think perhaps a different adjective might have been less inflammatory in that context. I am not accusing anyone of being 'racist'. Apologies again if that is how it sounded (I don't think it did...). I am keen to understand how ED is 'better' than its surrounding areas.
  3. I have disagreed with your rather dogmatic and sarcastic points on here Lenk, (e.g. Clothing descriptions are useless ....Skin colour description is useless - Unless the perpretrators happened to be bright green, in which case they'd stand out a bit.). But I am inclined to agree with your latter point. To use a word like 'better' in this context is supercilious, lofty and totally inappropriate. What is 'better' supposed to suggest? That ED is more middle class, organic shops....WHITER??? PLEASE. I also dislike JetSetWilly's point "so someones been mugged big deal". It can be psychologically devastating and terrifying when something like that happens. You sound as if you're all heart.
  4. I was in shock when I heard too Heidi, and I also have the exercise timetables near my computer and her name is obviously still next to many of the classes. It is tragic. Meryem was only about 38, and I believe she had two daughters. The manner in which she died is indescribably awful. It is so sad.
  5. I was shocked and deeply saddened to discover that one of my lovely aerobics instructors was killed last week while cycling via Elephant & Castle. I read the news report - which stated "Cyclist dies at Elephant & Castle. Woman loses life after being hit by lorry" without realising, until later, that it was Meryem who taught at ED Leisure Centre and Peckham Pulse. HGVs are involved in more than 50 per cent of London cycle deaths, according to Transport for London. Many of them happen as the vehicles turn left and cyclists, who are in drivers' inside blindspots, are caught under wheels. I am now having second thoughts about buying a moped. I think it is just too dangerous. The story makes for horrific reading (it is available online). I know everyone who knew her is devastated. May Meryem rest in peace.
  6. Yes, James me too. I did suggest it a while back....
  7. " they were quite young, early 20s, no hoodies but one was wearing a bandana (black and white we think)". Was the gang black, white, asian or a mixture? I am really sorry this happened. It sounds awful. Did the gang actually take anything? You say they "seemed to want cash or mobiles" but don't say if they actually did make off with anything? Awful that they got physically abusive too.
  8. I actually thought it was potentially very dangerous whilst driving there today. So many accidents happen in that area that it is quite frightening as to what may happen now ther are no working traffic lights. There aren't even any - admittedly vile - temporary traffic lights!!!
  9. Definitely the Sea Cow for outstanding quality, then second Sema's where you get loads of chips.
  10. 'new Bohemian center'(sic)???? It most definitely is not bohemian, LOL.
  11. I hear scurrilous rumours abounding that there are ne'er-do-wells frequenting our beautiful parks and stealing aforementioned daffodils. How dare they do that? Especially in such a nice area as this.
  12. It's a wonderful place. The shops are gorgeous and relatively inexpensive. I love floral cushions and plastic ornaments. I also love organic produce and don't find it at all expensive. I love the fact that there are lots of trendy prams and loads of mums. Ok, so some of the 'Dad's wear Crocs and think they could pass as 21, instead of their real age of 40+. But nowhere is perfect. Yes, East Dulwich is lovely. How could anyone not adore living here?
  13. Eddownunder, I did not call your comments ignorant but said "What an ignorant assertion to make." And no Daizie I will not take a chill pill. I grew up in Australia but have been here since childhood. I lived back there and worked as a newspaper journalist on the Sydney Morning Herald so know the place very well. It irks me when Aussies come over here and knock Britain, and go on about what an amazing place they come from (truly amazing in all aspects with no faults) when nothing could be further from the truth. I often wonder why so many choose to stay in the Uk for years and years when it is so 'horrible' here. I was bored stiff in Australia and hated the largely suburban way of life. I found the place extremely racist too, and I am not alone. The weather was humid and far far too hot. The shops make ED ones look amazing. I was very very glad to get back to London, despite it being overcast and raining. This is a wonderful city. Anyway, back on topic...Mrs Robinson...Hm...
  14. I agree with some of what you say EDdownunder, but take umbrage to your lofty assertion:- "It's just the way it is, I accept it like I accept the rubbish weather, I know I don't have to stay." Are you saying the weather 'Down Under' is great, compared to our 'rubbish weather'. Everytime I have been 'Down Under' I have found the heat unbearable - and found it hilarious how everyone there moans about it being 'too hot'. Personally I would rather be in a climate more akin to my pale skin. Or at least a climate which did not have humid, sweltering, blistering heat. But then I find beaches terribly boring. And incidentally, so you know 'you don't have to stay'....well, does anybody have to stay anywhere? And the customer service in this country is not 'woeful' everywhere. What an ignorant assertion to make. As for the small shops, even though many are not to my taste - and not within my price range (I agree with you that many are far too expensive) - I wish them well in this 'woeful' economic climate. Someone very close to me has just lost his job in one of the small firms locally and I would not wish this on anyone. Back on topic, I have been in Mrs Robinson a few times and never bought anything as I don't like nick nacks/trinkets/ornaments for the house, preferring to use the local freecycling service due to my poverty stricken state.
  15. I have just complained to the council. The temporary traffic lights aren't working properly and the traffic was hellish this morning, especially going UP Forest Hill Rd. There were no work men at all there either. Does anyone know what is going on here??
  16. The sign looks like one which would suit a harlot's boudoir.
  17. True Sean. But there is so much on LL which is not that useful, and I have to go elsewhere for it, which is annoying. Having said that, there are som good shops too..!
  18. I totally agree with you Jamma. I am not sure who 'bought' into it all in the first place. Having said that, I feel sorry for those people whose businesses are/have gone bust. But perhaps there should have been more market research into what local people need to buy. I liked the baby T-shirts in that shop next to Healthmatters, but would I pay ?26 for one? NO.
  19. Well, the LL one and the Edgware Rd one (see link) look VERY SIMILAR.... http://www.davinashoes.co.uk/boutiques/
  20. I was in Edgware Rd yesterday and saw another shop called DAVINA selling similar wares to the delightful one on LL. Are they owned by the same person? If so, I expect that they do a roaring trade to the many Arabic ladies living in the Edgeware Rd area.
  21. Will some of you STOp being so bloody classist!
  22. Yes ????, I think such people who are so offended by breastfeeding should go and live in Penge. or Croydon. Or Merthyr Tydfil. I would expect there to be less of it in places like that.
  23. No DaveR, I do not think that women should breastfeed their babies in the toilet. However, they should change their baby's nappy in the changing area (if there is one). Originally I felt the OP was kicking up a bit of a stink about nothing, but in hindsight (and after reading the post more throughly), I am of the opinion that said nappy changing woman should have used the changing area instead of a table.
  24. No I have never shopped at the Glades in Bromley - if that comment was directed at me!
