  7. It appears to have been what was known as a 'Scattered Home', a Poor Law provision. The London Metropolitan Archives in Clerkenwell have some Camberwell Board of Guardians records, some specific to Matham Grove. If you go here, enter as a guest, and then search on Matham, you can see catalogue entries for the admission and discharge register. There appears to have been a home in Melbourne Grove too, which might have been the predecessor of the Matham Grove one. London County Council would have assumed responsibility when the Local Government Act 1929 abolished the poor law unions. The LMA also has many LCC records.
  8. If you want it checked, you do it.
  9. I've just checked the Licensing Register for shops in Dog Kennel Hill, Grove Vale, and Lordship Lane with licences granted for 24/7 alcohol off-sales. The only ones I've found are: Sainsbury's, 80 Dog Kennel Hill Payless Food & Wine, 4-5 Badminton House, Dog Kennel Hill Payless Food & Wine /Costcutter, 24 Lordship Lane Londis, 93 Lordship Lane Payless also have 24/7 licences at 178 Bellenden Road, 121-125 Peckham High Street, St Georges Court SE1.
  10. Well, yes, there's lots of good intentions and wishes to extend their 'demographic', particularly in recruiting more of the regions, minorities and of the 'younger, lighter listeners [replenishers]' (35-54 year olds, honestly), to replace the current listenership as we fade into the ether. But if you look at it, there's not much more than approval of a few stated management initiatives that are more about trying to attract the people in than of anything very radical. For example, re ethnic minorities ('a challenge ... not specific to radio 4'), management propose (para.123), and Trust support and say they will monitor their attempts at: ? promoting the station among minority ethnic opinion formers through special content and marketing events; ? developing more diverse presenter talent for regular strands and major factual series; ? raising the number of minority ethnic drama writers and highlighting their contribution in our promotions and marketing; ? improving the promotion of productions and talent that diversify the sound of Radio 4; ? gathering more regular data on the response of minority ethnic audiences to the schedule (e.g. through improvements in the Pan BBC Tracking Survey). Not much more than could routinely be expected from any wet Friday afternoon session putting Postit notes with suggestions on the wall, and nothing much, I suppose, to take exception to, so long as they don't spend huge amounts of money at it. The Radio 4 audience is quite bright enough to welcome new interesting stuff and fellow listeners. But I do doubt that anyone would be happy with any substantial changes to the character of Radio 4 that didn't 'work' for a large part of the audience and producers. Anyway, in the longer run, it'll probably be ecological factors[*] that determine how things go. Where that lies, anywhere between an intellectual/cultural renaissance and a Dumbed Down Age, I'm not sure I want to think about. [*] By which I think I mean the ecology of what is in people's heads, their available knowledge, ideas, abilities, habits, expectations and wishes.
  11. A few days ago I posted in About this Forum about single Last Post times on the forum top contents page occasionally not corresponding to actuality or to any particular post. Yesterday evening I noticed another instance. The Last Post time for the About this Forum section was being shown as 07:03pm, despite there being no post in that section at that time, or even for some time earlier. Now, the Last Post time for the About this Forum section is again/still showing as 07:03 pm. But this time, it does match reality, the current time of the last post in the section, which is in the Ask Admin thread. A bit spooky. Do we have a forum server with the power of precognition? But that still wouldn't explain the other apparently spurious references which were to earlier posting times.

It's worth comparing the country of origin. "Packed in the UK, using butter from more than one country", ha ha. I wonder how they manage that trick. > Otherwise, if lemons/blue cheese affected the flavour it would be unlikely to penetrate very far, so > try cutting into the middle and tasting a bit at the centre. Took some core samples, and checked at different times of day. Whatever the origin, the taste is inherent, but always nearer to 'offputting' than 'repellent'. I'll probably just throw it away anyway. The usual blandness of unsalted butter is actually, I find, a strongly distinctive and good taste, but miles away from this one.

  14. When I looked at some of the local licensing conditions, at the time that people here were talking about occasional noise from DHFC, I was struck by variations between establishments, for I don't know what reasons There was and is one, the Black Cherry, which is actually required to do metal scans, on Fridays and Saturdays after 22:00. "342 - That SIA registered Door Supervisor, shall be employed every Friday and Saturday after 22.00hrs and the terminal hour that the premises are in use under this licence and provided with Hand held metal detection units in order to ensure that searches are carried out in respect of all admissions to the premises, whether members of the public or performers and their assistants and Mechanical counting devices to ensure that the maximum accommodation limit of the premises is not exceeded." http://app.southwark.gov.uk/licensing/LicPremisesGrantedDetails.asp?systemkey=833704
  15. I sometimes think the whole Forum is fictitious. ;) Speaking of fictions -- an occasional, and probably inconsequential glitch that I've noticed three or four times, all I think in the evening, during the last ? 8-12 days. On the contents page, the Last Post time just for just one section (which can vary; last night it was this one) differs from that of the actual last post in the section (and doesn't seem to match the Last Post time of any thread on the section's first page). It eventually comes back into synch. The longest I've seen it endure is probably less than half an hour. When my mind is free, I sometimes meditate on possible causes, to no obvious effect.
  16. > are we saying that I need to reduce once even smaller..and will the result be good to view..without a magnifying glass? Good enough for most. There are lots of examples to see here, like this one. Or you could post them on a free file hosting site, and link to that.

I wish I could make out why/for whom they're providing the site. Are they doing it pro bono!!??? Anyway, their "Government Grant News" page does say "That does NOT however affect the grant funding offered via THIS website, as said funding is not provided by the government, but instead, is provided by various utility companies"; which, until I know more, just makes things even more opaque.
  20. I looked up loft insulation when there was an earlier post about cold-calling. I concluded it was probably a whole set of private outfits all seeking work on the coat tails, as you suggest, of a government grant scheme - I assume Warm Front managed by Eaga plc, who describe themselves as an outsourcing company and appear to engage subcontractors to do the actual work. They do run a complaints system. Some of the outfits advertising do seem to like to look as if they have some official status, using website names incorporating 'government', (eg government-grants.co.uk, registered to Internet Marketing Kent Ltd). Presumably any company offering Warm Front work is subcontracted to Eaga, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Who knows, they might be offering a good and economic service. They are (if that's them) at least a long established company, even if not local. But I do look forward to hearing what you get from them about their stated place within any such scheme. And I'm not clear, from the Warm Front site, just what at all they can offer at the moment apart from maybe the chance of a ?300 rebate if over 60. Actually, I've just looked up British Gas, and even they claim that "British Gas offer free loft and cavity wall insulation to anyone who is 70 or over or on one of the qualifying benefits below", with no mention of any government grants. The over 70s bit, btw, seems, according to another site, to be a grant offered since 2008 under the Government's Carbon Emissions Reduction Target, rather than a Warm Front thing.
  21. While we're at it ... I've recently tried buying (unsalted) butter again for occasional use, in place of the usual margaric mush. A packet I got from Lidl a few months ago was fine. The one I got from more recently from Aldi ('Morning Fresh' brand) sat for two or three weeks in my fridge before I even opened it and has seemed to me semi-rancid from the start. This despite a Best Before date of 18 Feb. and no sign of fridge dysfunction or anything else going off. Has anyone else noticed similar? And, before I take it back, if / when I go to Aldi again, could it conceivably have been affected by other stuff in the fridge -- say lemons or blue cheese? But that said, it was securely wrapped.
  22. HSBC then. The scammers are branching out.
