  1. The Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee has a session of inquiry into "Preparations for Coronavirus" this afternoon that may be of interest. Starts at 13:45 according to https://committees.parliament.uk/, though the https://parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/cced67ec-c445-4698-a21b-7d9ff8a01354 channel, at which it can be caught live or in recording, says 14:00, which I think is more likely. A written transcript usually turns up shortly thereafter. I suspect I'll find it a lot more interesting and less stressing than this, fairly typical, forum thread. I'm continuing to update, at the top of page 6, the daily counts of confirmed cases in Southwark, as issued at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51768274. It's now at 33. I wonder if some of the variability in the apparent rate of increase (latest counts: 11, 13, 28, 33) could be due as much to the way cases reach official awareness as to the real-world incidence, which is likely to be higher, perhaps much higher. I trust that there are various stratagems in operation, such as GP surgery reports or random population sampling, to get ongoing true estimates of the numbers actually infected. Can anyone recommend any other public fora, newsgroups, mailing lists, blogs, etc where there's any fairly expert discussion of the issues and science? I'm feeling nostalgia for the days of Usenet, etc. Despite being over 70, the idea of getting infected early and over with, and becoming a free and potentially useful agent again, is a tempting one.
  2. For electricity: ? 0) Check with a neighbour to confirm that it's general 1) Find from google the electricity network provider for London 2) Check https://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/power-cut [ETA] or their list https://ukpn.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/power-cut-list/ I can't see any current power cut on their map for the area. Or any mention at all on the list. Was it a brief cut?

  4. Presumably it wasn't the last two cans? :)

  6. > It should put the community (which > includes many vulnerable people > as well as those who work at or > are visiting friends & relatives > in Kings College Hospital down > the road) first in this situation. I hope and trust that those groups will by now already be very wary of unduly increasing their risk of exposure.

The series apparently has the same endpoint as the single figures reported each day on the BBC, but I'm not sure how they reconcile on a day-by-day basis. In any case a moving average, over several days, is a better way of making any apparent trends more obvious. I'll see about preparing a graph showing this.
  11. > how many people in Southwark have it? Eleven confirmed cases so far. That's bound to be a bit less than the actual figure. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51768274
  12. Can you perhaps entice it into posing again but getting a better focused picture, with maybe a ruler or coin beside it for size judgment. Not that that'll help me identify it at all, but it would make it more interesting.

  14. > Hubby phoned BT who think it is our outside line which > I do not believe is correct as I have internet connection That's quite consistent, and typical. As DF has I think said eleswhere, the voice and the internet signals use greatly different frequencies, so that your internet can be working while your voice line isn't. If BT have done a line check and say that the fault is in the outside line, that's good news for you. No need to risk having an engineer in and entailing a hefty charge if they find that the fault is within the house. I dare say you'll find that the line fault will be remedied within a few days. The only other indoor test action I've seen recommended, apart from testing your phone in the master socket, is to try swapping in a different microfilter. But if it's an external problem, that's unlikely to make any difference.

    Bulb Gas/Leki

If anyone wants to use my Bulb link I will give ?30 to a charity of your choice. PM me for the link. I've previously objected to the use of this forum as a money-making device by people who want to just publish their link and rake the money in. I think it's ugly. I don't know if my countermeasure is much less so, but think it's worth trying. I'll refer this post to Admin anyway, and if he wants to remove all Bulb offers, including mine, that's fine. ETA: my post was, as can be surmised, in response to another one, now removed, in which someone gave their Bulb link. Since Admin hasn't removed mine I'll leave it up for the time being while I ponder. The actual Bulb working is in fact: "Get ?50 when you refer a friend to Bulb Refer Bulb to your friends and you'll each get ?50. Just give them your referral link." So I reserve the right to at least limit my offer to people I think I 'know' from their posts here, and don't feel uncharitably toward. If no takers, fine. I might well remove this post sometime tomorrow anyway.

  17. There are some emergency repairs overnight 14-15 Feb to the line between Peckham Rye and Nunhead. According to https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/242647.aspx they're scheduled to be done by 06:00, but it might be prudent to check on http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ldbboard/dep/PMR/NHD/To that there's been no overrun. Looks ok now, Saturday 10:05

  20. > a steep decline in the level of investors knowledge > on markets (both into and retail investors). I take it the "into" is a typo or machine guess, but haven't yet lit on what it should be.
  21. Is there any information that can help narrow down the time of night that any of these took place?
  22. If anyone does have cause to call 999, I think I'd make a point of mentioning, not just the immediate act that triggered the call, but also, if appropriate, the fact that the person matches the description of the perpetrator of number of other instances of spontaneous 'random' threatening behaviour or assault in the area over the past week.
  23. You could try putting a largish amount of some strong smelling liquid (disinfectant, bleach, ...) firstly down your own loo, to see if that smell reaches you by the unconventional route. If that isn't detectable within a day or two, then perhaps provide some more and ask your neighbours if they will kindly do the same? If that turns out positive, I think that gives good grounds for their being involved in getting a professional investigation underway. Is it possible to be certain that it's the human product? Are there any other possible candidates?
