Harris East Dulwich Reception 2014
Mariamadeit replied to Caroline_S's topic in The Family Room Discussion
This is great Norfolk villas... Will pm you in a min. -
Yes but that's the point devsdev it is miserable to get it when you are older. And worse still to miss getting it altogether and then get it whilst pregnant. Mine have so far missed it but we have been in contact with children with pox (intentionally and unintentionally) the most contagious time is just before the spots appear though so that's tricky.

Thoughts on Fairlawn vs. ED Harris
Mariamadeit replied to selbe's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you look at the other thread about school offers day tomorrow, you will see lots of thoughts on the new Harris school, Robin Bosher was the person that initially sold it to me, I like him, what he stands for and the values he was looking for in the new school. I guess it depends about how you feel re the temporary site and the move to the new site in a year's time, how you feel about there just being a reception class and how you feel about Harris. Ultimately we all know our own children best and need to make a decision based on their needs and what we think will be best for them. Good luck :) -
Harris East Dulwich Reception 2014
Mariamadeit replied to Caroline_S's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Caroline I completely agree, I was unsure at first but Robin Bosher really spoke well about his vision for the school and I was also pleased with the new head. Tell me if this is a crazy idea but how do people feel about tying a ribbon or something on their bag/scooter or whatever so that if we see another family/child in the park or wherever, with the same we introduce ourselves, with only 60 of us, we might have to ask a lot of families before we find any other Harris families otherwise. -

School places offers day tomorrow

Bonacara when we went to visit horniman (before the bulge class was pulled) they said that they had something like 22 siblings of children already at the school, which leaves 8 places on distance so I very much doubt that a waiting list would be of any use in this case. -

Blimey Fly they didn't offer you anywhere? Have you spoken to renata? It seems very odd all of this. -
School places offers day tomorrow
Mariamadeit replied to Mariamadeit's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Paddykelly I think you would be better to find out how many places were given to siblings and then what the furthest distance was, as ivydale have bulged, last year because of the high number of siblings, it may be the case that there was again a large number of siblings. I think I am right in saying that it doesn't matter whether you put it 1st or 6th, it's done on distance from the front door. -

Yes the new Harris school doesn't have a track record, they don't even have a school yet, but Harris does, the new head said he was keen to get experienced teachers for the school and I think that this is a great opportunity for our children. My husband has just returned from work and we have had chance to discuss and we will be accepting the Harris place, I am really pleased and excited that my son will be part if this. -

Family holiday suggestions?
Mariamadeit replied to Scottish Janet's topic in The Family Room Discussion
http://www.sultanpalasdalyan.co.uk we have been here twice, first with bump then with 6 mo it is run by a British man and his wife, lovely quiet area, everything is by boat, they collect you at the airport, breakfast and evening meal (Turkish food) inc pool, regular boats into town and another thought the reed beds to the beach, lots of trips available, nice little shops/caf?s/market in the town. We did a fab trip upriver to the lake were we swam, it was great. It isn't walking distance to the beach but it has so much to offer. -

@selbe yes I expect the catchment will be wide, with strong emphasis on those living in the black spots. I think that the new school will find it difficult to attract families at first as A. It isn't an established school, no buildings yet etc B. Location on homestall road, changing to the police station in a year, might well put people off C. There seems to be quite a bit of negativity towards Harris in the area However there are a number of factors that also make in an attractive option, as I outlined in my post above, key to this will be that there will be 60 children in the first year, I think that will be fantastic. Having met the head and some of the people involved in running the school, I have been pleased with the ethos they represent. Ultimately though, as with any school, the class teacher will be key as that person will have the biggest impact on the children. In terms of choosing this one over any other school, I guess the first year isn't the right one to look at to determine this. As the application was separate, we didn't have to put it in rank on the online form, for us it would certainly be in the top 3, however I very much doubt that we would be in a position to choose between Harris and another school, it would be interesting to hear other views on this. The added bonus for us is that the temporary site makes it probably our closest school anyway. I am a teacher myself and I intend to become involved in school with my son, that would be the case whichever school he went to. -

Mariamadeit replied to Mariamadeit's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes I am pleased as I am pretty certain that we will not be getting any other offers tomorrow (we live in the black spot off forest hill road). I have attended all but one of the meetings held about the school and met the new head at the most recent. I think the school will be able to offer a lot of opportunities to our children, things that bigger schools (there will only be two reception classes in the first year) won't be able to and I hope that they make the most of that opportunity. The children will be in the unique position of being the eldest throughout the school and will have a large part in shaping the school. -
Good luck to all waiting to hear, today my son was offered a place at the new free school and I am so pleased as with the change to the bulge class at horniman, I was worried that we wouldn't get anything.

Oh no, how disappointing! We were hoping for there too :( where did you hear this?

4 hour flight with a 4 month old - any top tips?
Mariamadeit replied to CocoC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I also took my children on a great number of flights, first at 8 weeks, a change of clothes in your hand luggage is handy, ask for the lap belt as you get on, there is nothing worse than settling your child on your lap, they fall asleep and then the air steward m&s with the belt, you can't do it one handed. A new toy is also helpful, but at that age they mostly sleep or look around the plane. Give them something to suck on the way up and down. Good luck. -
We are on therapia, will tell you in April what happens...
