"so Andrew, Meghan said you did xyz, what > have you got to say about that" or "and you say > Harry's not your child, would you care to see the > paternity test we did on that ? Results after the > break !" Very true. Didnt watch it, but the fallout/news coverage is unavoidable. Having basically read all the controversial statements...might as well add my two cents... - It strikes me as a highly choreographed affair - with just enough being revealed/implied by the various statements to do maximum damage to the 'firm', while attempting to appear innocent/victimised at the same time. - Most of the controversial statements were highly subjective, with (at best) tenuous links/implications/partial truths - but this is enough for the American press in particular to run with it largely unquestioned. - For those that want to like Meaghan, or those that delight in accusations of racism and bigotry - 'Meghan's truth' has now morphed into 'the' truth, despite more holes than swiss cheese in the overall narrative. - I think at the end of the day what we have here is a culture clash between a rather pampereded Hollywood celeb and a rather pampered royal institution - and unfortunately one of the pampered hollywood things to do is to tell 'your side' in such an interview, and the pampered royal thing to do is to stay silent and suck it up......so 'the' truth actually ends up as shrouded as ever.... Probably the biggest red flag for me that it was a thinly veiled hatchet job - was the whole discussion over the who made who cry between Meghan and Kate Middleton - A fair and reasonable response could have easily just been...there was a disagreement about Bridesmaid dresses - they were both upset by it, and they moved on. But...no...Megs had to make a point of saying it was actually Kate that made HER cry (how would she know if on the way homne, kate had cried or not over the issue?).....the result being that she 'didnt want to disparage anyone' while throwing kate under the bus at the same time..... All that said, I cant believe i've been sucked in to giving a sh!t:)
  2. No Thanks...I get enough unsubstantiated assertions, subjective interpretations, and self-pitying waffle from reading the EDF...:)
  3. well, if nothing else, isn't this more fun than the 5 letter word game thingy.....

In that context, its interesting that you want to put me into a convenient 'bucket' that makes you comfortable to judge me, and okay with dismissing my views......

  6. VDL sounds like something you have to get a shot of penicillin for... well that or a referendum.....
  7. well played JohnL, well played.....not much retort to that (on this topic at least!)
  8. "not to mention UK unilaterally breaking the agreement by extending supermarket grace period without consultation" You can say they are acting unreasonably - the Uk Govt will say they are protecting their national interests (something the EU is also doing)

Lets all remember that if and when the UK aggressively responds....
  10. Oh Effra...you cant say that on here...someone will be along any minute now to tell you this is what Leavers voted for, and how all you're doing is blaming the EU for all our domestic problems....... But in anycase, I think its time I admitted that I do feel like I was lied to as a Leave voter. I was under the impression that the EU would be fair and reasonable partners should we leave the EU, whereas they are acting in a callous and vindictive manner, committed in their desire to make Brexit a failure, therefore making the harshest possible interpretations of the various agreements, and often wildly inconsistent with how they treat other 'third countries'. Case in point.....Not allowing 'equivalence' for financial services, when we still operate under the exact same rules that we did 3 months ago, and they have agreed equivalence with some weird and wonderful jurisdictions, but 'no' not the UK....their standards dont meet the EU's for financial regulation apparently. So yes, I was mislead prior to the referendum, mislead that the EU would not act to punitively punish the UK for leaving the club....

  12. Well...it looks like the Nurses/Unions saw me say 'teachers' and thought...we can top that... From the Graun....."The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) will establish a ?35m industrial action fund following the government?s recommendation of a 1% pay rise for more than a million NHS workers in England, its leaders have announced. It follows a strike warning from Unite, the UK?s biggest union, which said it will be considering holding an industrial action ballot following the government?s ?kick-in-the-teeth announcement?. Now, Health workers have clearly worked very hard, under much pressure over the past 12 months in particular. And in an ideal world (or even just a 'normal' world) they would indeed be due a significant bump in pay But we dont live in anything near a normal world at the moment, and this reaction to the proposed pay-rise in the current climate is outrageous and tone-deaf in my view. When swathes of people around the country are losing their jobs, or are at risk of losing them after furlough ends, when 1000's of small business have already gone under or are at risk of going under, when high streets are decimated, when young people cant get jobs for love nor money, when we have Children needing remedial education measures......we have the people with arguably the safest jobs in the country moaning about the meagerness of a rise in their pay...?
  13. Very true about the general public's lack of interest in lies from our leader.....but looking more broadly than just politics, is it because society at large has too many versions of what 'truth' is? So it all starts to become a bit meaningless? The reason I raise this...I was skimming an article today about the upcoming Meghan Markle/Harry interview with Oprah....and in one of the clips pre-released of the inteview, Oprah asks Meghan ?How do you feel about the palace hearing you speak your truth today??...YOUR truth?...WTF does that mean? It used to be something was either true or false....sure, we can talk about peoples 'perceptions' or 'interpretation' of events....but YOUR truth?

This is shocking Mal....I've lived in the area for 10 years...and that Sainsbury at the Plough is my local shop....I've never noticed a community notice board.....:)
  15. If Sturgeon is forced to resign in the near future, will it take the wind out of the sails of the independence movement, at least for the near term? Clearly the SNP and independence issue is not goin got go away, but Sturgeon is clearly a formidable political and the face of the independence movement...

Why it should bother you, I've no idea. I dont want to speak for spartacus...but to be fair Alan...the title of this thread suggests he doesn't really need a reason:) Lets keep this as a safe space for us grumpy old pr!cks, opinionated so-and-so's and general whingers.....

  19. Tradesmen who ask what your rough budget is for a job right upfront...then proceed to give you a quote for double that amount....

That may well be true, but they often really don't help themselves do they? (As a collective group)
  22. Im going to say teachers. Right up front....Im in no way debating that that many teachers are fantastic and work their socks off in a tough job, with many pressures.... ....but don't we all know it.... Open any daily newspaper, and invariably they'll be an article somewhere with a teacher or teachers union bemoaning one thing or another....or chat to a friend who's a teacher and they'll often tell you how tough they have it... Other professions in the shortlist would be nurses and black-cab drivers....anyone else?
  23. Young Urban Professional. its pretty clear.
