  1. I'm just trying to get the tape measure around the tongue, in the cheek, as it were...
  2. Isn't the idea of "Hackney cabs" terribly North-ist?

  5. Oh, Nette, I was thinking of *the other* dog B)
  6. Agreed, James, I'm all in favour, it's just the comms that needs to be sorted out. Which is so often the way with Southwark.
  7. 'North' is of course anywhere north of Elephant, except where the river runs more southerly. But for a more philosophical discourse, do check out Glenn Gould's 'The Idea of North'.
  8. Nette, I think nobody on the internet realises you're "a dog". :)
  9. zeban, has it already been dubbed 'the twitter revolution"? :)
  10. Did that Egyptian guy on the radio (in the street) just say "Thank you Facebook!"?
  11. Ecotricity. Some considerable time ago, I went for a 'fair's-fair' supplier, not green unfortunately. The idea: no quarterly charge, no-more-expensive-for-those-who-use-less. Because it's fairer for the less well off, for those who use pre-paid etc. But I finally decided that green generation is now more important than any other consideration.
  12. Is there anything worse than the Hairy Bikers? All that faux-Geordie from Simon King (just listen to how the accent changes over the course of a programme) gets on my tits.
  13. Mr Twirly, you reminded me to finally order a copy of GC's Remotion (on which the Jon Anderson remixed track appears), at extortionate cost. Thank you!
  14. Quids, after a friend posted this image on *another district forum*, there was a suspension, for ever.... [nervous titter] Of course, now the news from Saudi has appeared in the Grauniad, all good sandal-wearers should be nervous, but they probably already were. The problem is with the Express and Sun and Mail readers.

  16. As Harold Wilson might have said, two weeks is a long time in politics. :)

I've read it again and again, and there is no mention of the collection day changing. So neither document says the collection date is changing. and a service leaflet which included > the new collection calendar referred to in the > letter. Just to make up for the misinformation in the pre-printed leaflet, like? and instead we > delivered the same ones used for everyone else on > the scheme, which you rightly point out do on a > couple of occasions refer to an October start. Well it's been almost 3 months since the start of the pilot extension, so I would have hoped that was the case by now (though note that there were at least nine boxes placed outside on wrong day on this stretch, this week) but your specially-printed=-for-us letter did not help matters! Please consider all the information being delivered to the householder at the same time, and how it will be interpreted, and acted upon, together. The whole point is to communicate effectively in order to affect actions by as many as possible. > > Kind Regards, > Ian Smith > Acting Head of Sustainable Services

There are other possible very sympathetic plans afoot for the place (which could only really start to be discussed once the Materplan was approved a few months ago), with other possible sources of funding. But looks a little like the CPFC agenda has overtaken the agendas being pursued by local people who actually live around the Park.
  21. First, you get some training in statistics, so that you can understand and apply probability theory, statistical mechanics, decision theory etc. The scientist's question was rhetorical: she will of course have a thorough grounding in statistics, probability, risk, uncertainty... as part of her scientific training. The problem with most politicians is they don't have a clue. So the question is an interesting one to ask, to determine whether they have any sound framework at all for arriving at decisions.
  22. Quite. And we ain't even got started on wage slavery (whoever convinced us *that* was a good idea?) or resource depletion... :)
  23. One week on, our thoughts go out for Daniel Graham and his family.
  24. LM, what's your view on intermingling of beans? I mean, I'd say if the recipe says haricot, borlotti are also fine, flageolet should be mixed with some other darker beans but fine, field beans fine... I'm fairly catholic as far as beans are concerned... And chick peas in any mix are rarely bad news. But grains should be 'taken with a pinch of salt' (they are not beans, and behave a bit differently.) (From Spain, Tolosa beans are always a good bet, but not widely available here.) What do you think?
  25. Indeed, even though it sells buffalo mozzarella :-)
