how do I delete one of my own posts?
The Nappy Lady replied to yenkcah's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You can only go in and click edit text at bottom of post then remove all but a full stop or put 'removed' in. Otherwise send Private message to one of the Moderators & ask them to do it - may take longer. -
Saffron, Glad all is well. I am told that I have a slight tendency to squint in 1 eye only when overtired. My optician picked up on it a couple of years ago. I remember at school at one of the eye tears I was referred to hospital because of it and then on the day they couldn't find any problem & it was only picked up again 30 or years later! What the doctor said sounds good, but keep an eye on little Saff just incase as it may be somethjng that comes & goes. Though hopefully not of course!

www.playout.org.uk 020 8670 5850 Bus full of games, activities & play workers visiting our local parks 25th July to 26th Aug. EDITED TO ADD: Was very confused as when I checked their website it was different to the schedule on the board at the park. Have phoned now, and can confirm the website schedule is out of date. So see park noticeboards or phone to check where they are and when. They will be at Peckham Rye Park every FRIDAY over the holiday from 12-2pm Yippee!! Poster on board at peckham rye by the loos.

This year we took on an allotment & I have been pondering the strange way it has made me feel like a 'better' or maybe a 'proper' parent.....why? Because I grew up on a smallholding & spent my entire childhood watching & helping (hindering?!) my parents in the garden & with the goats & chickens etc. Somehow sharing some of my own childhood experiences with my children has had a really profound effect on me, more than I expected. It's been so flipping wonderful to see them plant garlic, shallots & potatoes and then dig up the magical results a few months later. They don't always stay engaged, & at times have whinged terribly about going up there, but mostly it's been so great (& I did wonder if we were crazy taking it on with a 2 year old). Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to hear if others have had moments like this, where amongst the day to day madness of parenting you find a simple thing that really made you feel like you were 'there' as a parent?

Yes towelling bibs & then put a rubber pelican bib over the top to catch the worst!

I love the concept of natural play, and the actual stream is great (though suspect it will not stop us from crashing Wells Park I'm afraid, as it is nowhere near as exciting as the water jets!). But the wooden stuff I don't really get - those tall posts with a circle on top are too far apart from go from one to the next, and get rather high, the wooden platforms are not particularly exciting, tunnels and stuff more like they have at Goose Green would have been better I think. I hate it, because it makes me sound so miserable and ungrateful, I am really , really pleased that they've done the makeover, honest. I just wish they'd maybe consulted people a bit more, or thought a bit harder about the age group it is aimed at. Ah well, time will tell I guess, and before we know it, our toddlers will be clever 6 year olds zooming around the adventure playground without giving us heart attacks!!

Here now, scaffold fencing still up & not lpoking finished im afraid. Climbing frame looks like it's suitable for older children - 7 plus?? Water play will be great but I'm sad not to see more play equipment for 1-4 year olds as this is what I feel the park lacks. Adventure playground is great for 5 plus but I think the little playground is pretty rubbish. Still this is a vast improvement & maybe more kit still to go in.

Starting school but just 4 days a week?
The Nappy Lady replied to busymum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
ladywotlunches, I am in the same boat as you - DD2 is an early Oct baby & would have started nursery this coming January 2012 but now under the single intake she has to wait until September 2012 when she will be weeks off turning 4. Doing the school run with her sister every day she is desperate to start already poor girl & many of her playmates who are just weeks older than her are starting this Sept. I know there has to be a cut off somewhere but I wish there was a better way. -
First shoes - confusion
The Nappy Lady replied to sophiechristophy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
How about slipper socks Buggie? I got some for C last winter. Not sure how small a size them come in but maybe you could Google them? They have a lot of rubber on the base so might grip? I was thinking about this thread and wintertime, and thinking in the UK you really have to have wellies for the park once they are on their feet, and some kind of socks at home unless you've got underfloor heating throughout (what a dream)! Jo Jo Mamon do those rubber 'sock on' things to keep socks on don't they - do they offer any kind of grip as well? I suspect not as I think the bit that goes around the food sits in the arch...just brainstorming! A gap in the market - quick mumpreneurs - get inventing!! -
Just watched this on iplayer. What an amazing family, and what incredibly brave people. Alex and Ali both amazed me with their strength and courage. I'm so glad they got to have their wedding day, and heartbroken they didn't have longer together.

First shoes - confusion
The Nappy Lady replied to sophiechristophy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
It was pretty obvious with C...I pointed it out to the midwives within the first few weeks and they referred me to the Kings physio team, who saw me a few times, and when she got to a year they referred me to the Orthotics Team for the shoes. In actual fact she was never considered that bad, in extreme cases the children may almost be walking on the outside edges of their feet. In a 'normal foot' if you hold a pencil from the middle of the heel to the toes vertically the pencil should run through the middle toe, but on her it would run through her little toe if that make sense. If guess with an older child you'd have to ask your Doctor to refer you. -

It is interesting. You can see the importance of them being properly fitted by Clarks etc. - bear in mind my youngest, now nearly 3 has been in special orthotic shoes since 13 months old to correct her Metatarsus Adductus - this is when the Metatarsals (bones in the feet) curve inwards as a result of how she lay in the womb - so no issue with her ankles, but her feet were 'banana shaped'. Just wearing these specially made shoes, which the wonderful NHS have provided, made to measure and with a straight inner edge has been enough to gently correct her feet, so they now appear totally normal. To do this, she had to wear the shoes 12 hours a day, 7 days a week pretty much, though we are less ridgid now. I'm so relieved, but also it does prove how easily their feet can be affected by what they have on their feet. I still think that if they are properly fitted shoes it's fine however. I know when they measure little fit they allow a thumbs width for growth between the end of the foot and the toe of the shoe, and also of course measure width, and advise on the style of shoe (my eldest always had to have a T Bar due to her high arches and chubby feet! -

Agree with Pickle, and I found my two walked better with proper shoes on. You can do bare feet at home for much of the time to balance it out if you want to. -
Opinions on rubber floors for a family kitchen!
The Nappy Lady replied to Bishberro's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My sister has Lino that looks like floorboards - really convincing unless you look closely! Underfloor heating is def. The way to go - we kind of have it in our bathroom where the radiator pipes run under the rubber floor LOL. -
Yes, Ivydale on a Monday morning, but it's about a 15/20 minute walk across Peckham Rye Park to the children's centre. Not sure if Rye Oak still do 'open sessions', think you have to apply for a place don't you? When are the Albrighton Centre sessions? Might be worth investigating. Anyway - there is plenty on in the area, so you should be fine - keep your eye on this forum and you'll soon hear about lots of stuff, it's a great area to be in with children :-)
