When I wandered past just now I mistook it for an art project initially! http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn185/idiotboy77/35177FC7-A2CD-4D65-BADA-58AF9C132900_zps5ijk3w9i.jpg -

Another chugging on Lordship Lane

I found a mouse trapped by its hindquarters in mine, it had dragged the trap around under the worktop, and was a fair distance from where I had set the trap. Lesson learned - there are far more humane traps available.

It could be resistant to the poison. Mice in Europe started becoming warfarin resistant a few years ago. Whether that's already happening in London too, I don't know. My most successful mouse trap position has been to put one inside a box, left in a corner for the mouse to explore. That was good for the occasional visitor. When a whole family of them arrived, after a nearby business left a pile of broken furniture out for them to breed in for several months, I had to get a man in eventually. Traps everywhere, lots of wire wool - hoping that's the last I hear of the little buggers.

The sat-nav will be accurate. I had the same issue on my old Ford Focus. I don't think it's that the speedo is doctored - some of them are just a bit rubbish. If I could strap a Tom-Tom to my handlebars I'd be sorted :)

This morning, I rode that bus lane like I was auditioning to take over from Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible franchise. The bike was belting along faster than it's ever carried me before! According to my phone, the very top speed I reached all morning was a totally badass ... 30.2mph. At this rate, I frankly suspect I should just ride as fast as I can all the time, on the assumption it will never be fast enough to trouble the long lens of the law!

I've realised I need to figure out how far off the speedometer is on my cheap little Taiwanese motorbike. So far, I've used a smartphone app to determine what my top speed has been on a journey. That confirmed that the speedo is cautious by more than 5mph, i.e. if the needle says I'm tearing up the highway at 35mph, I actually haven't touched 30 yet. Anyway I can't find an app that will give me accurate retrospective spot speed over a short distance, and I don't have a way to strap my phone to my handlebars to spot check my speed in real time. But I'm thinking I could just find one of those road signs that tells you how fast you are going, and ride past it a few times until I reach the speed limit according to the sign: then I'll be able to mark up the dial on the speedo in the right place. So - any suggestions for where there is one of those speed indicator signs, on a stretch of road that doesn't suffer from traffic, and is rider-friendly (as in, not lined with parked cars)? Or, any better suggestions?

They're transmitters disguised as cameras. One for each hemisphere of your brain. Beaming subconscious thoughts from our lizard overlords. They need to keep us cattle docile by divide and conquer - if you don't immediately start wearing a heavy-bottomed pan* on your head when you're near them, you'll be susceptible to ideas like "outsiders are bad"; "People from other neighbourhoods are a threat to your lifestyle"; "Your territory is being invaded and changed for the worse". You will develop irrational phobias - of random things, like estate agents, or croissants. Be vigilant! *p.s. I recommend Le Creuset. If you are instinctively horrified, I'm afraid it's already too late.

My opinion (as flawed as anyone else's!) is that some people have a vision of their career at an early age, and that those who don't have that vision will need time to find their path rather than set artificial plans. My suggestion to a bright young person who is still open to any number of careers, would be to go for an academically rigourous degree. A good degree class in one of the subjects viewed as 'serious' will open many doors in the future, and just as importantly the mental challenge will be more rewarding for a motivated student. And there will be excellent careers advisers and fairs at university. It's ok for teenagers to look ahead with an open mind - despite all the peer pressure from friends who all 'know' exactly how their lives are going to play out. My most interesting friends are those who have switched horses at least a few times between A-levels and main career :) They're just as successful as the less interesting ones!

Don't sweat it too much. The guy's next employer/client has to make their own judgement based on interview etc, and if they have a problem they can get rid. We all know the risks when we take someone on. I read a really bad reference once: someone from HR had left it on the fax machine. It was about a freelancer - a kid earning ?27 an hour. It said, "Unfortunately we would not use X's services again. We experienced problems with timekeeping?" (it went on a bit). Apart from being totally unprofessional by leaving the document in a place where nosey parkers like me would read it, I thought it was seriously mean of the company to go that far, rather than simply declining to give a reference. Anyway, whatever you write, do assume the subject will read what you have written. That might not happen - but it can happen, and personally I find that influences what I write.

Fashion is what one wears oneself.? What is unfashionable is what other people wear ... Other people are quite dreadful.? The only possible society is oneself. (A favourite scene from An Ideal Husband)

In the Four Quarters on Rye Lane last night they were playing back-to-back Prince downstairs in the confession booth. Good place for that sort of vibe. When I speculated how long it will be before Fidel Castro joins the 2016 roll call, the barman declared himself a big socialist fan. Reckon this might be an interesting place when it's El Jefe's turn.

Celebrity husband checking out the 3-for-2 offers on olive oil. I think he took the extra virgin.

Is it true that the price of croissants, ciabatta, olives and chorizo will go up massively if we all vote "leave"? I don't want to live in a world where my only meal choices are British. But if there's a way of keeping prices the same, and moving off to a free trade area with cool countries like Canada and New Zealand, I'd like to have my brioche and eat it please.

When will politicians put an end to these idiotic gagging orders? I think it's going to be a long, long time :-(

Scooter/motorbike owners: watch out tonight
peckham_ryu replied to rabbitears's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks for the security tips. For parking in a road space whilst at work, I've put a chain on one wheel and now added an alarm onto the other. One cracked fairing, chipped headlight, snapped L-plate, scraped exhaust and half litre of oil later ... I've also now learned not to park side-on to the wind!! -

Could a biker advise, as I'm new to having one: is a padlocked chain (proper one intended for motorcycles) through the back wheel and a fence enough? My bike is a relatively cheap and boring 125cc so hopefully not very attractive to thieves, but having said that I really don't want it nicked!
