Doctor who - the witches familiar - questions
peckham_ryu replied to TheArtfulDogger's topic in The Lounge
I was amused by the other new word the Daleks were barking in Episode 1: "The TARDIS will be procured! PROCURE! PROCURE! PROCURE!" Wonder what the BBC's Procurement department did to wind up that particular script writer? ;) -
Armed policemen on Lordship Lane
peckham_ryu replied to dulwichgal's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've heard that the Met's policy is for its firearms trained officers to carry their weapon when they are working, not just when they are on an 'armed response'. So it could be you just saw a copper doing cop stuff, and he happens to be one of the firearms officers. It used to be that coppers concealed even their truncheons and cuffs, so as not to intimidate the public. I guess they have decided the public is less intimidated by the sight of weapons in the 21st Century. Also sorry if this sounds pedantic, but "gunned" can't be used to mean "carrying a gun" in English. -

The point of this "patronising French breakfast snack", which was invented by Austrians, has always been to tempt hungry punters with something richer than plain old bread, but more everyday than your fancy pastries. Hardly healthy, but better for you than a bacon butty, and less offensive in the office too. (Unless you consider biting into a crescent-shaped pastry to be Islamophobic, which was sort of the original idea back in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.) If you want to be properly patronised by p?tisserie, you'll be wanting a macaron. A confection that practically sneers at you for not knowing what flavour it is before you bite into it, and whose ghost defies you to even glance at a jammy dodger ever again. Each one a tiny, pricey bite of delicious Gallic derision.

Dog Walkers and Know It All's

Dulwichdarling Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > So what will posting this achieve? It's reinforcing the social stigma against leaving dog logs lying around. If no-one makes a fuss about it, dog owners who would rather not have to hold their breath and feel the unpleasant, still-warm dump through a plastic bag (or if you're squeamish like me, the triple-bag scoop), then they may well not bother. But if there's some stigma and embarrassment attached to being someone who doesn't clear up, like being thought of as an "irresponsible dog owner", then that social pressure leads to cleaner streets. No-one is going to thank you for telling them what you think of their revolting and anti-social sowing of stools, but they will nonetheless find the encounter unpleasant and with some people that will make them mend their ways. Having said that, I half expect that one day I'll get a thump for pointing out things like this (and littering) to strangers. So take care who you wind up ;) -

What did they do exactly? On a more basic level, they are doing a rubbish job of cleaning. Last two times I went, I got home and realised there were noticeable things I needed to finish off myself; and I am far from renowned for my dirt spotting abilities. I'm not going back there.

I can only sneer on one side of my mouth. Also can only cock one eyebrow. Both same side of face. Full wink ability though ;) Down the gym this week two lads in the changing room were standing in front of the mirror, both of them independently flexing one pec and then the other. I've never seen anything like it, they were like human pinball flippers!

I want to do what local people do - origami shop
peckham_ryu replied to Bob Buzzard's topic in The Lounge
Great idea Bob, but some work needed on that name. Here are some suggestions to get you started, with some possible USP's for your business: - Origami hand-folded by Buddhist monks: Paperchaste - Exotic sweets with origami wrappers: Nippon Tuck - Japanese emporium in Peckham: SamuRye - or your original Lordship Lane origami shop idea: Crease Dulwich Hope that's helpful x -

The Peckham Coal Line urban park
peckham_ryu replied to TheCoalLine's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
?unlike a pleasant green space to walk between two separate and arguably disparate parts of Peckham, without having to choke on traffic fumes? A space which might entice folks at the Rye Lane end to go visit places at the Queen's Road end? Seems to me this ticks all the main boxes rather than needing to bust further out of one. -
Peckham Lodge seems to attract its fair share of reviews from visitors who regret their decision to take a dirt cheap bargain in London. The lodging itself is much criticised on TripAdvisor and Booking.Com but the real bile is reserved for the cardinal sin of being located in Peckham ("too far from city"). "Mature Couple" said After a lot of budget lodging and sleepless nights in rubbish guest houses, my rule of thumb is that anything with a review score of 7.5 or less on Booking.Com is to be avoided at all costs.

Do we have any entryist vote saboteurs willing to admit as much on the forum, out of interest? Or anyone (whether 'entryist' or genuine) who has been declined voting rights?

The Peckham Coal Line urban park
peckham_ryu replied to TheCoalLine's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I like it. I really like it. @TheCoalLine: If the park becomes a reality, how will it then be maintained? E.g. has Southwark Council agreed to take it on as a public park? -
I buggered up my rear bumper on a low fence/barrier. Got it fixed by the guys at Peacock & Sons on Chadwick Road - I thought they gave a good an honest opinion on my options. They did a great job too.

Hadn't seen that story. The Operation Spade material which triggered the police investigation was the low level stuff (see the Wikipedia links and sources linked earlier in this thread, or type Operation Spade into a search engine for the reports). It is because it was so low level that the UK authorities did not get around to dealing with it for 2 years, which I suspect says something about all the really sick stuff they have to prioritise. If the anonymous quotation in the Southwark News is reliable, then that does make matters as bad as can be really. I guess when an offender does himself in and thus prevents the criminal justice system from determining what he did, then he leaves himself open to being judged by others based on hearsay.

Heads up - Interesting threads in the main section

Folks in good humour and on good form in the Organic Bush Meat thread http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?30,1553264,page=2 -
As far as we know from what has been reported publicly, the material was of child nudity in "athletic and recreational scenes, but not explicit sexual acts". For sure, that's a nasty perversion of the images in question, exploiting them for thrills. I'm just saying though... all this talk on here about complicity in assault, and supporting the origination of sexually abusive images, is probably bollocks. I have no problem with us all being appalled - I'm appalled - but there's no reason to embellish what has been reported with what else you think might maybe also have happened, but have zero evidence for. In Germany, there are politicians who downloaded from the same site. We don't even know who they are, because German law does not classify non-sexual images as illegal. Meanwhile in England, a local vicar has taken his own life. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been ashamed: his actions exploited children, shamefully. I am saying that there is a massive lack of perspective here, both in a man preferring suicide over shame and punishment, and in the way that all the undoubtedly good things he accomplished in most of his life have now been entirely negated by a few hours of furtive onanism whilst somewhere in the Bundestag, reputations remain intact despite exactly the same actions.

Thank you to the woman who stole my Waitrose shopping
peckham_ryu replied to Carolyntobin's topic in The Lounge
Theft. Legally and morally. There's not a judge in the land that wouldn't sentence her to two weeks of dog food, wine and stale croissant as her only permitted diet. -
This morning: barely a sound in the sky. Heathrow is on easterly operations today - it's made a very pleasant change :-)

New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham
peckham_ryu replied to LondonMix's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Although it has been open for 6 months, I don't think Aya has been mentioned yet. Probably because it's very hidden away: a little cr?perie / caf? right at the back of the small shopping arcade next to Khan's on Rye Lane. Not a bad cr?pe. -
If it's using the property's power supply then a small fee to cover the electricity makes sense, based on agreement that the owner will ensure continued supply. Assuming the recording equipment is remote, so not sited inside the property. Beyond that, I don't see it any different from having a street name sign on your house, which there is no rental for. Other matters: data protection stuff; including signage, who will be the Data Controller, etc.
