There's something wrong with that > story When I registered my mum?s at NatWest, I did so with their own form which she had already filled in and signed. I also had to show a recent bill and ID. When a loved one is very ill, and you?re far from home to be with them, and you?re dealing with all sorts of things for them all while trying to keep yourself emotionally together, time can be against you even for what might seem like relatively simple things. Like getting a bank?s form filled in when the account holder?s condition has worsened considerably, getting hold of your ID if it?s back at home, that sort of thing.
  2. In terms of actually using them, a cautionary experience from one of my cousins: My cousin was a very prudent lady. Long before she needed it, she arranged an enduring power of attorney so that her daughter could control her finances. Years later, my cousin was admitted to hospital, where she would have to remain for what were sadly her final days. She sent her daughter to the bank, as she wanted to make a few gifts. To their dismay, when the daughter produced the correctly completed and certified document which had been in the filing cabinet for years, the bank could not do anything with it. My cousin effectively had no practical way of accessing her own money, even though she had put the legal authority in place for her daughter. It turns out that once you have the power of attorney, you need to go and register it at the banks where you?ll need it to be used. You would have thought a solicitor would tell you this stuff, but neither my cousin?s did, nor did my mother?s when she wrote hers. My mum and I have since followed up with her bank - as the ?attorney?, I had to provide all the stuff you would for opening your own new account, like passport and a recent bill. I think the bank sent my mobile banking details, which I guess I?ll activate if my mum ever needs me to.
  3. Do persuade the police to interview this person. Either they are attempting fraud, in which case they?ll get themselves nicked, or they?ll have to hand over the unedited evidence. (Alternatively, withholding / deleting the evidence would create another offence for the police to nick them on.) Go for it.
  4. Bill?s has such an awful reputation for the way it treats its staff. I gather the waiters still don?t see a penny of the service charge. Louisa?s Wetherspoons petition gets more appealing every day!
  5. I just had a letter from TfL, cancelling a fine they had issued me for stopping in the box junction next to Peckham bus station. I had definitely stopped in the box, it goes to show it is worth putting in an appeal. TfL?s letter says: It also then says that on this occasion they decided to ?exercise discretion?. So it?s not necessary a black and white thing. When I filled in the ?representation? box I had simply said that if I had stopped in the box, it must have been because somebody changed lanes in front of me and blocked my exit, and anyway it was not possible to tell from the one photo whether I or not I was just moving slowly and could I please see photos from 10 secs before and after. All a bit speculative, but I don?t make a habit of deliberately clogging up box junctions so I?m glad I don?t have to pay a fine this time :)
  6. alice Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > East dulwich medical centre too easily confused > with dulwich health centre The DMC sites aren?t exactly confusable with East Dulwich Health Centre. They tend to call themselves by their initials and site name (e.g. DMC Chadwick Road - which seems not to suffer from local confusion, despite not being in Dulwich at all).
  7. DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The precise legal definition of criminal fraud > may vary somewhat by jurisdiction. Our jurisdiction is England and Wales Foxy ;) (The Fraud Act 2006 applies, and covers this window licker, for what little that's worth!)
  8. Did he have the cheek to say hiw much he expected?
  9. The ongoing fad for naming public buildings after the worthy departed is such a bore. I almost feel sorry for Charles de Gaulle, commemorated by one of the most awful major airports of the world. Just say where it is! East Dulwich Health Centre makes so much sense.

Only 3 out of 4 tills working ? given there are so many basket checkouts down the other end, why were 2 of the 3 working trolley tills tied up by basket people? I suspect there?s a correlation between people who can?t read the word ?trolley? above the tills, and can?t competently operate the self checkout!
  11. Can?t it just go in the general waste bin? That?s where I always dispose of mine (in sealed containers). I haven?t seen it on the list of things that aren?t allowed in general waste.
  12. Cats are nocturnal, so just take them at midnight when all good dogs are fast asleep.
  13. Sounds great. I trust there are rousing choruses of The Quartermaster's Stores round the Friday bonfire? Speaking of which, where do you get the sustainable smokeless fuel for it?
  14. Not on at all, and not allowed either. Worth taking their details and pinging a complaint in. This whole area is well within The Knowledge too. Uber drivers can be proper buggers as well. The drivers don't know the destination until they have picked you up, but their trick in central London at peak times is to ring you to "check where exactly you're standing ... oh by the way where is it you're going?". They desperately don't want a journey that ends them up round here, where there will be no fares near and they'll have to waste time and fuel getting back to somewhere busy. If you either tell them the truth or sound too evasive then they just cancel on you right after their call. I've taken to answering that question with "Just going the other side of Kensington mate", as they're always eager to end up round there. And as I tell them, I do live just the other side of Kennington really. And yes, it probably is easy to mishear Kennington as 'Kensington' on a mobile with lots of background noise, as I often sympathise ;)
  15. Oh I thought the charity drivers were supposed to collect the bags back from your doorstep, including the unopened ones? I might be mistaken, or confusing them with Avon catalogues maybe. I wouldn?t leave them out anyway as they come in handy as rubbish sacks, or for taking stuff to the charity shop (not generally the charity that left the bag!).
  16. Did my eyes deceive me, or did I spot Bip Ling browsing the frozen burgers the other day?
  17. That pesky air ambulance too. On and off Kings more than Nell Gwyn. Why can?t they use stealth drones?
  18. I do think I?m seeing fewer of them than a few years ago. Still see one most days, but they used to always be around with cubs frolicking etc. Hope they?re getting on ok, and keeping the rats and mice pinned down.

  20. Crikey. Your friend must be fuming.
  21. How does TfL assess ?demand?? If they use fare data, it?s not a surprise that the 12 is statistically under-capacity. At my stop, about 75% of adults board without tapping. It?s been yonks since I?ve seen ticket inspectors. dbboy Wrote: -------------------------------------------------------
  22. I know you?ve got to be careful not to get the floor too wet, but I let the cleaner get on with mopping the whole lot with Flash like any other floor, and it?s done no harm. As long as the mop is reasonably wrung out, it doesn?t slosh water everywhere.
  23. Previous owners of my house had ?soundproofed? a ground floor room by fitting a suspended ceiling, and filling the void with loads of roof insulation. Absolutely useless as far as I can tell, didn?t muffle much at all. So that?s how not to do it :)
  24. Anything has got to be better than the assault on our senses being perpetrated over at M&S. They have X-Factor celebs voicing the self-service checkouts. Who?s shouting at us excitedly today, to insert your card NOW in the Lordship Lane foodhall? Ant and bloody Dec, that?s who. I only went in for granola, I?ve come out with palpitations.
