Tony.London Suburbs Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Chick Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > A better description would have been useful. > > That IS a fair point though. > The more detail, the better. Ref more detail. I felt that Dulwichdoll got in the neck a bit for her level of detail in her thread 'Free market excess and the credit crunch', so I guess some people try to keep it brief in hopes that they will not receive swingeing (love that word) comments. Am I just not quite getting it Keef, TonyLondonSuburbs and all you other established forumites??? or am I right in thinking the forum has a MEAN streak?????? Love humor, not so keen on mean...

This is what the new boy on the block says... "we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task." Jan 20th 2009 = Obama inauguration speech

Wow, I am amazed, scanning over this thread, that so many people seem to have no idea how unsettling it can feel when you are on the street, alone at night, and someone is behaving weirdly around you. The issue is that you have NO IDEA whether you are totally safe, or whether the person in question is a serious danger to you. Also... A little compassion and understanding goes a long way in life, I am sorry to hear you friend was frighted by the situation, not nice for anyone. I have lived in South London for 20yrs, I consider myself to be pretty street aware and try not let the possibility of dangers on the street prevent me from living my life to the full, however it is wise to use your brain and to also alert others to any possible danger... Thank you for letting us know.

Free market excess and the credit crunch
charliecharlie replied to dulwichdoll's topic in The Lounge
Dulwichdoll... you are going through truly tough times, thank you for sharing it with us. A hard story to tell and a hard story to read, especially as it is, no doubt, just one of thousands of similar stories from small businesses across the UK. And, of course, there will be more to come... Hard to be sure that there is 'light at the end of the tunnel' in the current 'recession' (amazing how much resistance there has been to using this word) or should we now be calling it 'collapse'??? -

I think it is Venus, I have recently had a conversation with neighbour how is expert in all thing 'starry'. I was also amazed by it's brightness, never seen it this bright before. Wondered if it could be to do with the thinning of the ozone layer, thus looking brighter, even looked at it though my binoculars because I could not work out what it was!!! happy gazing xcharliecharlie

and on a more upbeat note... I particularly liked this bit of his speech "we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task." and boy are we going to need that kind of attitude in the years ahead!!!! happy 'glad seizing' forumites:-S

Hello JustG, I don't think it's about 'knowing what you're supposed to be doing with your life'... for me it's about patching together some interesting stuff to do and having great people in your life... that's it. I'm not looking for answers... just living life, keeping my eyes open for interesting experiences and trying to get the best out of each day. my new year's resolutions were laugh more, dance more, worry less ps I laugh and dance a lot

an ex of mine's best male friend took it... his girl friend did not like the results, at first it was just fun/funny but then he had a hard on for 24hrs and she said the whole 'thing' became a bit freaky and they could not go out, not even to the local shop/pub etc as it was so bloody obvious! eekkk

I think it is entirely down to context of use... Australians often use the terms Aussies to describe themselves (their choice really...) Black guys in a social/banter situ sometimes call each other nig*** , however in another context... ie. white guy hurls verbal abuse across the road at black guy, it is clearly NOT acceptable and, in fact, is breaking the law. The term ?Brit? is often used in a negative way, but as the British don?t have a long history of being oppressed and racially abused, the term seems to have less bile/malice attached to it. However, I can not think of ANY context where the term Paki is acceptable (and the use of it would probably be termed racist in the eyes of the law... any precedents here Legal Forumites???). The term Paki has historically been use in a racist way. It has vile connotations. It is also sadly used as a generic term ie the p*** shop, to describe a corner shop that may very well be run by Indians (ignorance is not innocence in the eyes of the law and all that). I can not see, under any circs, that the term is acceptable! Give an example that proves me wrong and I will re-think!!!! oh... and it all started with a 'joke'...
