Family kitchen /living rooms dos and don'ts

We did similar. Some of the best things about ours now: - deep worksurfaces. We got deeper than normal worksurfaces on one half which are brilliant: means you can have cookbooks and other stuff pushed against the wall and still have space to use the surface - underfloor heating. So nice in winter (and means we dont need radiators) - big bifold doors to garden. Just so you can sit staring out. - a built in cupboard made by our builder which has a special long thing slot for the ironing board -
Umm, out of the tub from sainsburys *guilty face* (when making it we go very easy on garlic and tahini, otherwise it's overpowering for little people)

Driving to Cornwall with young kids - advice please!
njc97 replied to Jellybeanz's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We leave very early (aimed for 6:30, but actually 7ish), get kids up and into car in pyjamas, then do lunch at services (either Fleet or Reading, depending if you're going A303 or M4/M5), then stop again for a good lunch break (Stourhead's just off A303 and worth an hour running around and then lunch in cafe, we had a good journey on M4 this time and lunched by coast somewhere past Bristol). Makes it a long day but if you're stopping to see something, less of a chore. There's a good thread somewhere on here about stops on way to south wales which has more suggestions, particularly near M4. -
There's a shop pretty much opposite the British Museum, think this is it: http://www.highlandstore.com/

RRR - I think it was rebranded Thameslink 2000 after it was first delayed....

I think the Federation refer to the Telegraph Hill school as "Hatcham college" (because it's "close" to Hatcham), so if the new school was part of the bit of the Federation they'd want to keep Hatcham to differentiate from Knights Academy etc. See the snappily named "Hatcham Temple Grove Free Schoo, Haberdasher Askes Hatcham College" -
Should try la querce and babur in forest hill. And meze mangal in lewisham/new cross. And London Particular in New Cross proper. Viet Rest in Deptford maybe. Maybe Burger Bear Tom's residenciees at Old Nuns Head?

Parent and toddler group welcoming to dads
njc97 replied to PeckhamNicola's topic in The Family Room Discussion
It was 4 years ago now, but I was a stay at home dad for a summer and dont think I was the only dad at anything I went to. The sessions at Besson St Garden in New Cross Gate were good: http://www.nxgtrust.org.uk/whats-on/under-fives-and-families/ Has he been to Old Nuns Head toddler sessions? If no one talks to him, at least he can have a good pint. -
Present for a 5 year old boy (that is not Lego)

Anything to do with superheroes, dinosaurs or pirates. If he's just starting reading then there as some early readers avengers/dc superheroes books. Or a superhero dressing up costume. Or some hot wheels loop the loop track plus some cars? If he likes drawing, then we borrowed an amazing "how to draw dinosaurs" book form the library which was excellent for our 5 year old, but I've never found another one quite as good: all either too difficult or not quite as clear to follow. -
Bambuni have got a bar night tomorrow, and an incredible seleciton of beers. I go most weeks and they still always seem to have new ones in. No one has mentioned Ayres cronuts yet. Mmmm, cronuts. (Telegraph is more Telegraph/New Cross Gate than Nunhead. But still v good.)

Louisa, Rudds is unchanged bar the name on the sign. I assume there's some story behind that.

Not really Jimbo, it was a loss of amenity with no gain to the public.

Evelina road is quiet? Apart from buses, lorries and constant through traffic? Nunhead now has a better deli, fishmonger and baker than ED. And nicer shop signs. Unfortunately we now have 2 estate agents, so it wont last long. Jeremy's right: shame the restaurants never survive (Costa Smeralda was lovely, but always empty). Food at Old Nuns Head excellent now, but not the same thing.

Easing back into fine dining - any ideas?

Artusi on Bellenden Road gets very (very) good reviews and is a bit more local than traipsing up to town. Or Jose in London Bridge maybe? Bonaome's suggestions in Camberwell good, plus Silk Road in Camberwell. But maybe not "white table cloth" enough for a special night out? I wasn't *that* impressed by Pollen Street Social: good but not very good, if you know what I mean. -
Yes, Brooklyn Children's Museum is good. Central Park Zoo is brilliant. Coney Island maybe (we went in January, so wasnt quite the same as August) - good aquarium. You could buy this and read it with them beforehand as well: http://www.amazon.co.uk/This-New-York/dp/0789308843

Neilson: apparently not everyone was pleased. Apparently it kicked off in Nunhead because of the lack of a white person manning the polling station.

Pokertime - you're right. How dare he ride on the road, he should know his place and it's not holding up upstanding tax-paying motor vehicles. And per your bylaw, he shouldnt have been on the pavement either. Ban skateboards. And bikes. And pedestrians. Then we can have more space for cares and motorbikes to get around safely. (we can't understand the circumstances from one post, but it sounds like the scooter was too close to the "vehicle" in front and couldnt stop in time when he fell off. Had she been in front and a lorry behind, then I dont think we'd have the same reaction)

James - do HA really have the project team capacity since a) they havent started building the new free primary school (although they have now got planning permission) and b) they havent finished rebuilding the other primary school in the Federation (not sure what stage this is at)? -
Ruxley Manor is good: http://www.ruxley-manor.co.uk/ No outside play area, but a small soft play area, massive cafe (Pizzas and cakes are good, rest a bit soso), plus thyen have a tropical fish bit and they sell chickens, which is another 15 minutes of fun.
