  1. which is the bad side of barry road???? also the flats at the top of Landcroft Road tend to be quite nice, although I lived at the bottom once and it's better for the shops. That said now that the Plough has renovated, Bombay Bicycle has gone in etc, that bit might start looking a bit more salubrious. It looked pretty f-ing depressing on Sunday when I came out of the William Hill into the grey and the rain, having lost a few quid on Exotic Dancer.
  2. Purely out of curtain-twitching interest, does anyone know why the EDT was empty and blacked out on Saturday night?
  3. weren't the "trick or treaters" in the CPT actually on the rob? Maybe not the CPT but that is a common scam, one asks for money while the other nicks everyone's mobiles
  4. i'm a very occasional visitor to the Wishing Well but they've never been arsey with me for not being a "local" also i forgot to mention Giardano's, a very nice inexpensive Italian restaurant opposite Bar Story on Blenheim Grove.
  5. Emily's is amazing, especially the chips, and the guy is really friendly. We had a nice chat about the AOL Broadband offer and he gave me some tips about how to screw British Telecom (he used to be a phone engineer). He does make you wait for your food but it's worth it because it always tastes fresh, not just shovelling out some chips that have been sitting there for ages.
  6. Belleden's great, it reminds me of what ED was like when I first moved here 5 years ago. Properly nice pubs e.g. Gowlett, Wishing Well. Bar Story is a good bar for art students as well, there's a gallery in the back. Slightly younger demographic, it seems, not as many prams. If I were moving to SE London today rather than 5 years ago, I'd definitely be looking at Belleden.
  7. Kids shouldn't be allowed in pubs, they never get a round in or anything
  8. rye lane has a place doing 50p an hour, and you don't have to listen to DVD trailers being played really loudly
  9. brilliant, thanks! *checks website* arrgh i'm away for the munnery!!!
  10. emily's fish bar on NX Road, the chips are gurt lush and the guy is really friendly
  11. sorry i've had a quick scan of the archives but i can't find the old thread - but isn't there a comedy pub opening up a bit to the south, run by the people who used to run the Mag comedy nights? Anyone been?
  12. Barclays don't, I always just take cash out when I get there. Also as a general rule, be wary of no commission places, the rates are usually shocking (not in M&S though). The absolute best is www.xe.com, which gives you the mid-market rate, but you need to be transferring it to another bank account in the country you're going to. Useful if you're visiting relatives, maybe - zap it into their account and then collect it off them when you get there.
  13. the point is farmers are all cynical rip-off merchants, the "organic" label, however flawed in its implementation, stops them from taking the p*** by selling that rubbish bacon that shrinks in the pan etc. I couldn't care less about pesticides but there's no doubting W. Rose meat tastes miles better than Sainsburys'.
  14. i don't see what you lot are worried about, this is dulwich, all the junkies will be posh ones like amy winehouse
  15. has anyone eaten full-on proper dinner there? i'm vaguely considering it as an anniversary venue... NB I am not fussed about the service, i've found it fine there and am generally quite tolerant of "French" style service, just wondering about the food
  16. BP as well. Just to keep things on topic, I never notice plane noises now, really. But when I lived on Landcroft Road rather than Barry Road, they were really obvious - especially the bloody Concorde that would wake me up early each morning (i had no curtains so in the summer, the room was filled with blinding light - this was right at the start of the iraq war - so everyday my first thought was "sh!t, an atomic bomb has gone off!"). anyway my question to the experts is, will plane noise affect every ED resident equally, or does the angle/direction of your house matter?
  17. Get your facts right BarryRoad, BAA doesn't stand for British Airport Authority. It doesn't stand for anything, the full name of the company is just "BAA". I know this because I rang them up to find out.
  18. please god spare the CPT - the entire back bar should be listed as far as i'm concerned.
  19. there's nothing on the southwark website about compulsory recycling. I'm not opposed to it in principle, but they need to tell us exactly what is required of us!
  20. it is, rather, isn't it? those mags are basically just house pornography! i have a friend who believes that all this obsession with house prices is a real cancer of the British psyche... people trying to get rich without actually having to work for it... a bit extreme maybe but he's got a point. Ted Max - are you looking for an equity partner? ;)
  21. yes you're probably right, or perhaps ED houses are basically selling themselves, so estate agents don't need to advertise so much. i'm reluctant to criticise the journalists involved, i imagine that must be one of the most demoralising mags you can write for!
  22. i'm surprised they've gone under, to be honest - i work in mags and it seems pretty clear that the business model of Living South, DL etc would be based almost wholly on income from the property sections, with any additional revenue from local traders ads just a bonus. what does it say about the housing market that one of these folds?
  23. Nicolas stocks a really nice rose from Corsica. Can't remember what it's called but it has a map of Corsica on the bottle and costs ?6. i like it cos it's not too sweet.
