St John's and St Clement's Primary School Street
alex_b replied to gaylad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don’t think Amott/Gowlett will be that affected as alternate routes (the western end of Amott is closed by this). I think Fenwick is likely to bear the brunt of traffic. Southwark really should close the Bellenden rat-run to through traffic and keep commercial and HGVs on the A roads. -

Well the TMO states term time only as does the Southwark schools streets page. I’m generally fairly down on Southwark but I doubt they’d do something so cynically unlawful. I agree the closures are badly placed and will trap traffic. In the consultation and directly to the highways team (copying my local councillors) I suggested bringing the closure back to the corner of Nutbrook or at least advanced warning signs further up Adys and Nutbrook. Unfortunately I was ignored. -

We received a letter about the Adys Rd closure yesterday. Hours of operation will be 8:30-9:15 and 3-3:45 during term time. Warning notices will be issued to motorists for the 17th April and Penalty Charge Notices will be issued from the 9th May. -

You have to live within the restriction (ie on Adys roughly between Ondine and Amott or a short distance down either of those roads). There are also exemptions for registered carers of people living in those houses and for parents on children with mobility needs who go to SJSC. We’re further up Adys and so now cannot drive south during the period of operation. -

I think the positioning of the closure on Adys Rd is going to cause chaos, with traffic in both directions having no avenue for escape by the time the signs are visible. People turning left out of Nutbrook onto Adys will be particularly stuck. I’m supportive of the scheme, as Adys is used as a rat run for commercial vehicles and there are often angry confrontations between motorists and pedestrians around the school, but I think the positioning of the signage could be improved. -
Considering moving to Dulwich and need some advice
alex_b replied to Yz871's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Western edge of S15 (‘Bellenden Village’) is worth looking at e.g. Choumert, Nutbrook, Ogglander. The pros over SE22 are better transport links via Peckham Rye vs East or North Dulwich or Forrest Hill. It’s also marginally cheaper. The Belham is a good state primary and the Villa is well regarded for pre-school. Peckham Rye is as good as Dulwich Park for outdoor space. Depending on where in the city you’re based the commute is pretty good. I work on Fleet St and can drop my son at before school clubs at 7:50 and comfortably be at my desk by 8:30 with a coffee in hand. The Thameslink takes you to Blackfriars, City Thameslink and Farringdon. The overground links to the Elizabeth line for Liverpool St and District line for Aldgate/Tower. Plus you have Southern for London Bridge and a walk/bus to Monument/Bank or on to the Northern Line for Moorgate etc. What I like is the flexibility that if one line has problems then there are alternative routes. -
Anyone taken a builder to the small claims court?
alex_b replied to alice's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I’ve had to do it a couple of times after building work failed and had to be redone. The claim is pretty straightforward, you do it all online and only need to go to court if the claim is defended and the judge feels it’s necessary. The big challenge is getting paid after gaining a judgment in your favour. On both occasions the builders essentially abandoned the companies they were directors of and did a runner. The first time I got enough from the company’s bank account to cover my court fees and nothing else. The second time I haven’t recovered anything even after appointing bailiffs. -
Post not being delivered by Royal Mail

Yesterday was odd as our postie delivered a Tracked 24 parcel that I ordered on Friday but not any of the post we’d been expecting all week. -
Deliveroo warning - they didn't deliver and kept my payment

If you’ve tried their complaints process, I would just initiate a chargeback via your bank/credit card provider. -
Carrot Cars do, they charge £10 a journey. Since covid they seem to be consistently the cheapest airport transfer option. We have a compact Mifold Original booster that we take with us so we have a car seat for the other end too. For £40 it’s well worth it.

There are numerous signs saying to keep dogs on a least from April-September and not a single dog owner pays the slightest attention to them. I can’t imagine a “Don’t take the holly” sign would be any more observed.

There were airphones on planes for decades - very rarely used as they were prohibitively expensive. There is now Wi-Fi on most long haul flights that would allow voice or video calls to be made (although most airlines ask you not to do it) but I’ve never noticed anyone doing so. While the EU rules might be changed to technically allow this to happen, I expect that a combination of cost and social pressure will ensure it’s a rare occurrence.

Our son is at The Belham and we think it’s a really good school. The range of extracurricular activities is excellent, although I don’t know how it compares to the other schools you’ve listed. There is a real community around the school and the staff are by and large great. I’d echo what others have said about proximity being important. We like that all of our sons friends are within a 10 minute walk and he can get to 3 of them without crossing a road. Being able to go from home, to drop off and back home to start work (or get to the train station) within 15 minutes is also a big plus. I believe that even the popular schools are under subscribed as the baby boom ended and post COVID and Brexit reductions in young families in London, but it is worth checking with the schools.

It’s a solution in search of a problem. There is ample parking (at least in the South of the zone) outside of the operating hours. This just seems like a money making scheme for the council.

I think it depends where you want to take your career. Doing a Scrum Master qualification will take you down that route (and allied PM disciplines) where a Product Owner qualification is more likely to take you in a Product Management direction. As for businesses recognising Scrum Master more it is probably down to them practicing a Wagile model where they’ve rebadged the PM as a scrum master and don’t have recognisable product ownership or backlog grooming/prioritisation. Some red flags to avoid! Qualification wise, in addition to the standard Scrum certifications; Leading SAFe is a good one to look at, as is the PMI Agile PM. I’d also push for your work to fund it.

Thanks for taking on the forum. The upgrade looks great. One glitch, the FAQ is giving me a 404 error (safari on iOS).

There?s also the time and risk associated with properly accounting for the cash each day, checking your staff take the right amount, give the right change, don?t accept fake notes. Cash is not obviously cheaper than card, otherwise businesses wouldn?t be stopping accepting it.

There was something from Southwark Council a while ago about Solar Together (https://solartogether.co.uk/southwark/home). One of my colleagues used this scheme in North London and says it worked out really well for him.

Electric cars and charging - some questions!
alex_b replied to Adam's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think unless you?re driving a lot, installing a home charger is unlikely to pay for itself. We pay ?40 a month on the char.gy chargers which covers our usage - even if home charging dropped that to ?20 it?s still a long payback for installing a ?500-?800 charger. -

alex_b replied to Adam's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We have a EV (Polestar 2). We need to charge it every couple of weeks and use either the char.gy lamppost chargers or occasionally the fast chargers at the Tessa Jowell Health Centre. Chargy bills you monthly either on actual usage (33p/kW) or on a ?40/month subscription which drops the cost to 19.5p/kW. The Tessa Jowell chargers take credit cards or various apps. Overall the char.gy lamppost chargers work well for us. Zap Map will show where they are and if they?re in use, generally I drive the car round the corner on a Saturday morning or evening and leave it charging for the day or night. It?s not super quick, but if you?re not using your car multiple times a day every day it?s easily manageable. Occasionally the char.gy chargers all all blocked by parked vehicles and I?ll head to Tessa Jowell instead, that takes around 1 to 1.5 hrs depending on how low the battery is. Again I drop it off, have lunch, then wander back to pick it up - it?s probably 30 mins out of my weekend which works for me. Southwark have said they?re rolling out more chargers this year and we?re hopeful for getting one where we usually park. Worth speaking to your councillors to lobby for more chargers near you. -
Egyptian goose attacked by dog off lead in Peckham park

It?s the same in Sydenham Hill Woods, clearly stated at all entrances that dogs must be on a short lead March - September (bird nesting season) but universally ignored. I?ve stopped asking dog owners to follow the rules as they just ignore you or claim their dog is somehow fine to be off lead. Of course since there is no enforcement anywhere it?s all a moot point.
