Latest information on incident at Lakanal House Incident The Sceaux Gardens Estate is located in Camberwell and was built in the 1960's. Lakanal House, where the fire broke out, is a maisonette block. Residents in the estate come from a variety of backgrounds and are of a wide range of ages, including children and the elderly. The fire started on Friday afternoon in Lakanal House and the tragic consequences were: Six fatalities - including three children 15 people were taken to hospital, including a fireman. Approx 175 people have been placed in temporary accommodation or have been asked to move in with family or friends until it is deemed safe to return to their homes. Services to affected residents The council has a range of services to offer to those affected by this tragedy, including counselling, support with funeral arrangements and housing needs. This will mean that managers across the council will be called upon to put emergency plans into action. How the council responded to this emergency The emergency plan went into action immediately, with officers reporting into work on Friday evening and working through the weekend to provide assistance in this very difficult circumstances to those affected. So far we've assisted approximately 175 people at our rest centre, set up on Bushey Hill Rd, and continue to offer support such as providing accommodation, as well as other practical things such as finance and clothing. Our community wardens and housing officers have already begun visiting other flats on the estate to educate tenants about fire safety, to reiterate the offer of a free smoke alarm and to check for any potential hazards. We're now also contacting all other London boroughs to find out how many blocks similar to Lanakal House they may have and we will want to share all relevant findings of the investigation with them. Next steps Police and fire services are currently investigating how the fire started and spread across the block. Funeral arrangements and donations Funeral or memorial arrangements are not yet known, however when confirmed these will be coordinated through the Mayor's office. Chief executive Annie Shepperd, who was also working through the weekend, said: "These are very tragic circumstances and we still have a lot of work to do over the coming days and weeks to support those families affected. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of staff who've worked through the weekend, on such short notice and under very demanding circumstances, to put the needs of residents first". Book of condolence A book of condolence for the tragic victims for the fire in Camberwell is now open in Southwark Town Hall. All members of the public and staff are welcome to come to the Town Hall on Peckham Road, and sign the book, which will later be passed on to the families. Useful numbers Anyone who has concerns about relatives or friends who were living in Lakanal House should contact the Metropolitan Police on special number 0300 123 1212. Anyone who requires assistance from the council should contact 0207 525 5000.

If you want more information and advice on the recent news on the Swine Flu call Southwark Council's flu line on 020 7939 3493. The national flu line is 0800 1 513 513. How can you protect yourself? One of the best ways to avoid passing on viruses is to take some common sense precautions: Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible. Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully. Wash hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face or to other people. Clean hard surfaces (e.g. door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product. Make sure your children follow this advice. Where can I get more advice? You can also find more information and advice on-line at Southwark PCT Health Protection Agency Department of Health The World Health Organisation For travel concerns visit the Foreign Office website Southwark Council's pandemic planning strategy Southwark Council's pandemic planning strategy is already well up and running, as it is based on our current flu pandemic plans. Those are not traditional. Go to Gaby's in Peckham or Patty Island in Camberwell. -
